- Debit cards (V PAY, Maestro)
How Cards Are Read

Please note that the authorization method depends on the card's settings and cannot be predetermined by you, your customer, or SumUp.
Charging the Air Card Reader
Ensure the card reader is charged at least 25% for optimal card payment processing.
The battery level is displayed on the Air Card Reader's screen and via the LED lights on the card reader (refer to the 'LED' section).
Charge the Air Card Reader using the included Micro USB cable, connecting it to your computer or a power supply. The reader can be used while charging. A fully charged device supports approximately 500 transactions.
SumUp Air Card Reader Components
The SumUp Air card reader is comprised of the following components:
- OLED display: Shows transaction details and device status.
- NFC antenna for contactless cards: Enables tap-to-pay functionality.
- Magnetic stripe card reader: A slot for swiping cards with magnetic stripes.
- EMV chip reader: Located at the top, this slot accepts chip-enabled cards.
- Capacitive keypad: Features numeric keys (0-9), a red 'X' button for cancellation, a yellow arrow button for corrections, and a green tickmark button for confirmation.
Function of the Blue Lights/LEDs
The card reader has 4 blue LEDs at the bottom.
- Upon turning on the card reader, all 4 LEDs flash briefly. Subsequently, the first LED blinks every 4 seconds to indicate the device is active.
- The LEDs also blink once the connection between the card reader and the smartphone/tablet is established.
- During an NFC transaction, the first LED remains solid. Once the cardholder taps their card, all 4 LEDs blink.
- The LEDs also display the battery level. A brief press of the power button causes the LEDs to blink: 4 LEDs indicate 100% battery, 3 LEDs indicate 75%, and so on. If only one LED is blinking, the card reader needs charging.
General Handling and Care
- The device functions optimally within a temperature range of -10°C to +45°C. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, such as leaving the reader in a car during hot or cold weather.
- Charge the card reader at least once a month, even if not used regularly.
- The card reader is equipped with security sensors to prevent tampering. Handle it with care. Avoid applying force or impact (e.g., dropping or hitting the device) to prevent the automatic security lock from engaging. Once activated, this lock permanently disables the card reader.
