Battery and Charging

The SMOOTH 5E is equipped with a built-in battery. To activate it for proper operation, fully charge the battery before first use. To charge, connect the USB charger to the SMOOTH 5E's charging port using the provided USB Type-C cable (supports PD charging up to 14W). Charging is complete when the indicator lights remain solid. Ensure the SMOOTH 5E is powered off during charging.

Mounting the Phone

1. Unlock the tilt, roll, and pan axes, and unfold the SMOOTH 5E. Ensure the locking pin is rotated in the correct direction to avoid damage.
2. Attach the smartphone to the phone clamp. You can mount the phone in portrait or landscape mode depending on your shooting scenario.
3. When mounting the phone, pay attention to the mounting direction of the phone cameras as shown in the diagrams.
4. Ensure the entire mobile phone is securely fixed in the phone clamp.
5. Before turning on the SMOOTH 5E, please mount the smartphone and balance the gimbal.

Balancing

Mounting in Portrait Mode

1. Unlock the roll axis arm (1). Move the arm left or right (2) until the phone is stable and nearly parallel to the ground (3). Tighten the roll axis clamp knob (4).
2. Move the smartphone (2) left or right (1) until it is stable and nearly parallel to the ground.

Mounting in Landscape Mode

1. Unlock the roll axis arm (1). Move the arm left or right (2) until the phone is stable and nearly parallel to the ground (3). Tighten the roll axis clamp knob (4).
2. Move the phone clamp (2) forward or backward (1) until it is stable and nearly parallel to the ground.

A balanced smartphone state will affect gimbal operating time. The gimbal can operate normally in an unbalanced state, but it will consume more battery power and weaken motor performance.

Installing the Fill Light

Attach the magnetic fill light to the fill light slot on the phone clamp. You can choose to use the fill light for the front or rear camera depending on your filming needs.

Introduction to Buttons/Indicator Lights/Ports

Focus/Zoom Control Wheel

Rotate the wheel for focus/zoom control in the StaCam app. Rotate the wheel to control zoom in the ZY Cami app. Rotate the wheel to adjust the roll axis angle.

Focusing/Zooming Switch

Single press: Switch between focus/zoom/roll axis settings in the StaCam app. Switch between zoom/roll axis settings in the ZY Cami app.

MENU Button

Single press: Enter the SMART menu in the ZY Cami app / Return to the shooting interface from the settings menu. Press to return to the shooting interface in the StaCam app.

Joystick

Push the joystick up/down/left/right to rotate the gimbal.

Resolution Selection Button

Single press: Enters the resolution adjustment interface in the ZY Cami/StaCam app.

Control Dial

Select parameters/functions by navigating through specific menus in the ZY Cami/StaCam app. You can switch between photo and video modes in some phones' native camera app.

Fill Light Button

Single press: Confirm in some ZY Cami/StaCam app menus. Double press: Start shooting with the selected mode in the ZY Cami/StaCam app. Press and hold: Turn the magnetic fill light on/off (when on, turn the control dial to adjust brightness).

ISO/Exposure Adjustment Button

Single press: Disabled in the ZY Cami app. Switch between shutter, ISO, and white balance in the StaCam app.

DISP Button

Single press: Disabled in the ZY Cami app. Switch between display effects of the interface in the StaCam app.

Photo Album Button

Single press: Open/close the photo album in the ZY Cami/StaCam app.

Mode Switching

Single press: Switch gimbal modes (PF-L-F-POV-V). Double press: Return to the previous mode.

Photo/Video Button

Single press: Start shooting with the selected mode in the ZY Cami/StaCam app. Double press: Switch between front/rear cameras in ZY Cami. Switch between wide-angle, super wide-angle, telephoto, automatic, and front camera in the StaCam app.

AI Tracking Instructions

The AI Tracker (Artificial Intelligence Tracker) can recognize body movements and provide automatic target tracking without needing to connect to an app. It also allows for gesture control of the gimbal and camera.

AI Tracker Introduction

The AI Tracker has a camera and a Sleep/Wake Button.

Sleep/Wake Button (AI Tracker)

Single press: Wakes the AI Tracker from low-power mode. Press and hold: The AI Tracker enters sleep mode.

AI Tracker Setup

Attach the AI Tracker to the magnetic slot on the gimbal phone clamp. Simply rotate the AI Tracker 180° to change the setup direction for switching between front or rear camera tracking.

Gesture Control Instructions

Other Tracker Statuses

The movement recognition range of the AI tracker is up to 3 meters. However, it can be affected by challenging lighting conditions such as backlight or low light.

Gimbal Mode Description

Switch between modes by single or double pressing the MODE button.

Motors enclosed in a red circle will follow gimbal movement, while motors enclosed in a gray circle will remain locked.

Pan Follow Mode (PF)

The tilt and roll axis motors are locked, and the pan axis follows the movement of the gimbal handle. You can control the tilt axis and pan axis by pushing the joystick up/down and left/right.

Lock Mode (L)

All three motors are locked and do not follow the movement of the gimbal handle. You can control the tilt axis and pan axis by pushing the joystick up/down and left/right.

Follow Mode (F)

The roll axis motor is locked. The tilt axis and pan axis motors follow the movement of the gimbal handle. You can control the tilt axis and pan axis by pushing the joystick up/down and left/right.

Angle Mode (POV)

All three motors follow the movement of the gimbal handle.

Vortex Mode (V)

The tilt axis motor rotates 90° upwards, and the tilt axis, roll axis, and pan axis motors follow the rotation of the handle. Push the joystick left/right to control the rotation of the pan axis.

"Go" Mode (GO)

The camera follows the gimbal movement at high speed, performing pan and tilt movements while the roll axis is locked.

Manual Re-positioning

When Pan Follow Mode (PF) and Lock Mode (L) are active, the camera can be manually rotated to a specific angle. Press and hold for 2 seconds, and when you release the camera, the camera angle will be fixed at this position.

Standby Mode

When powered on, the SMOOTH 5E enters standby mode by locking the roll axis. When the roll axis is unlocked, the SMOOTH 5E will resume normal operation.

Packing

Rotate the gimbal to the storage position as shown in the diagram.

Download the App

Scan the QR code on the left (requires Android 7.0 and above, iOS 10.0 and above) or search for "ZY Cami" in the App Store or Google Play to download. Users can better utilize the various functions of the SMOOTH 5E with the dedicated app "ZY Cami". ZY Cami is subject to updates; please refer to the latest version at all times.

How to Connect

1. Turn on the SMOOTH 5E and enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.
2. Launch the "ZY Cami" app. Tap the camera icon in the top-left corner of the screen to open the device list and select the SMOOTH 5E you wish to connect to (you can check the SMOOTH 5E Bluetooth name on the USER ID on the tilt axis arm: XXXX).
3. If the SMOOTH 5E is used for the first time, activation is required in the ZY Cami app. An internet connection is required. After successful activation, you can enter the camera interface of the ZY Cami App.

Firmware Upgrade

You can upgrade the firmware of the SMOOTH 5E using "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools" or the "ZY Cami" App.

Method 1:

1. Connect the Type-C charging/firmware upgrade port to a computer using the USB Type-C cable, turn on the SMOOTH 5E, and enter standby mode.
2. Visit ZHIYUN's official website (www.zhiyun-tech.com), go to the SMOOTH 5E product page, click "Download", find and download the USB driver, ZHIYUN calibration upgrade tool, and firmware. (USB drivers are not required for Mac OS systems)
3. Install the driver and software, extract the firmware for files with the ".ptz" file extension.
4. Open "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools", select the relevant port, click "Open", click "Firmware Upgrade". Click "Browse" under "Path" to select the latest downloaded firmware (with ".ptz" file extension), and click "Upgrade" at the bottom to upgrade the firmware. Upon completion of the firmware upgrade, the SMOOTH 5E will automatically shut down.

Method 2:

After connecting the SMOOTH 5E to the "ZY Cami" app, if the app prompts you to upgrade the firmware, please follow the provided instructions. A network connection is required during the upgrade. Refer to the "How to Use the App?" section of this user manual for steps on connecting the SMOOTH 5E with the ZY Cami app. Before upgrading the firmware, please ensure that the SMOOTH 5E has more than 50% power remaining. Do not exit the app interface or access it in the background during the upgrade process. Pay attention to the prompts in the app.

Calibration

Automatic Calibration:

1. Mount the SMOOTH 5E onto the tripod and connect it to the ZY Cami App.
2. Go to the app's settings and select "automatic calibration".

The SMOOTH 5E will automatically enter calibration. You can check the progress in the app's prompt.

Six-Sided Calibration:

You can perform six-sided calibration for the SMOOTH 5E using "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools".

1. Connect the gimbal's charging/firmware upgrade port to a computer with a Type-C USB cable. Turn on the gimbal and enter standby mode.
2. Open "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools", click "Open" at the top and "Calibration" at the bottom. Proceed with the operation according to the following steps. A "✓" mark will appear after calibration is complete.

Simply put, six-sided calibration involves placing each of the six sides of the tilt axis vertically onto a flat surface.

Specifications

Product Model: SM122

Lab Data 1: Data collected under the following conditions: specified temperature 25°C; gimbal balanced and mounted with an iPhone XR phone. When the three fill lights are adjusted to the highest brightness level, the gimbal's operating time is 2 hours and 20 minutes. When the fill lights are off and the gimbal is in standby state, the operating time is 26 hours.

Lab Data 2: Charging time is 2 hours when using a 15W PD fast charger at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Charging time is 3.5 hours when using a 5V/2A rated power adapter at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Charging time may vary depending on environmental factors, and actual results may differ. Furthermore, the lower the charging ambient temperature, the lower the charging current, and thus the longer the charging time.

All data in this manual are collected from internal experiments conducted in ZHIYUN laboratories. The above data is subject to a margin of error under different scenarios. Refer to the actual usage values of this product.

Safety and Usage Guidelines

Thank you for purchasing the SMOOTH 5E. The information contained herein affects your safety, legal rights, and obligations. Please read this instruction carefully to ensure correct configuration before use. Failure to read and comply with this instruction and the warnings herein may result in serious injury to you or those around you, or damage to your device or property.

This is a sophisticated product. It must be operated with care and requires some basic mechanical skills. Failure to operate this product safely and responsibly may result in injury or damage to the product or other property. This product is not intended for use by children without direct adult supervision. DO NOT use with incompatible components or in any way other than as specified or instructed in the product documentation provided by ZHIYUN. The safety guidelines herein contain instructions for safety, operation, and maintenance. It is important to read and comply with all instructions and warnings in the User Manual before operating the product correctly and avoiding damage or serious injury.

WARNINGS:

1. Never allow the product to come into contact with any liquid. Never immerse the product in water or allow it to get wet. Never use the product in rain or humid environments. If the product's interior is exposed to water, a corrosion reaction may occur, which could lead to spontaneous ignition of the battery and even explosion.
2. If the product catches fire, immediately use water or water vapor, sand, a fire blanket, dry chemical powder, or a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. Please select the method according to the situation.
3. Please use the product in an environment with temperatures between -10°C and 45°C.
4. It is forbidden to disassemble the product in any way. If the battery is punctured during disassembly, the electrolyte inside the battery may leak, or even cause fire or explosion.
5. It is forbidden to subject the product to mechanical shock, rolling, or throwing. Do not place heavy objects on the product.
6. Do not heat the product. Do not place the product in a microwave oven or pressure cooker.
7. It is forbidden to place the product near a heat source (stove, heater, etc.) or inside a car in hot weather. Do not store the product in an environment above 45°C. The ideal storage temperature is between 22°C and 28°C.
8. Do not store the battery for a long time in a state of complete discharge to prevent damage to the battery cell due to over-discharge; otherwise, it will be unable to continue to be used.

CAUTION:

1. The SMOOTH 5E is a high-precision controller. If the SMOOTH 5E is dropped or subjected to external force, damage may occur to the product, which may lead to malfunction.
2. When the SMOOTH 5E is turned on, ensure that the rotation of the gimbal axes is not obstructed by an external force.
3. The SMOOTH 5E is not waterproof. Prevent the SMOOTH 5E from coming into contact with any liquids or cleaners. It is recommended to use a dry cloth for cleaning.
4. Protect the SMOOTH 5E from dust and sand during use.

WARNING:

1. Disconnect the product from the charger after the charging process is complete.
2. If you do not use the product for more than 10 days, charge/discharge the battery to 40%-65% and store it to extend battery life.
3. Charge and discharge the battery every 3 months to keep it active.
4. Hold the arm steady when turning on the SMOOTH 5E. Shaking during startup may cause the startup to fail.

Warranty Period

1. The customer is entitled to a replacement or free repair service if quality defects are found in the product within 15 days from the date of product receipt.
2. Customers are entitled to free repair service from ZHIYUN for any product proven to have material or workmanship defects causing malfunction under normal consumer usage and normal conditions within the valid warranty period of 12 months from the date of sale. However, the warranty period varies depending on the product component and the country of purchase. Warranty Exclusions

1. Products subjected to unauthorized repair, misuse, collision, improper operation, impact, neglect, faulty transportation, wetting, accident, and unauthorized modification.
2. Products that have been subjected to improper use or whose labels or safety labels have been torn or altered.
3. Products that are past their warranty period.
4. Products damaged by force majeure events such as fire, flood, lightning, etc.
