Preparing and Loading Dishes
Dish Preparation
- Scrape away large food pieces, bones, pits, toothpicks, etc. The filter system removes remaining particles.
- Loosen burned-on foods. Empty liquids from glasses and cups.
- Rinse off foods like mustard, mayonnaise, vinegar, lemon juice, and tomato-based products if the dishwasher is not run immediately, as they can discolor stainless steel and plastics.
- Load racks so large items do not block the detergent dispenser.
- Check manufacturer's recommendations for washing specific items.
- If connected to a food disposer, ensure it is empty before starting.
Loading the Top Rack
Important: Do not cover the funnel when loading.
The top rack is designed for cups, glasses, small plates, saucers, and bowls.
- Load glasses here; damage may occur if placed in the bottom rack.
- Load plastic items here only; melting may occur if placed in the bottom rack.
- Load items with open ends facing down for better cleaning and draining.
- Ensure delicate items do not touch each other.
- Long-handled knives and utensils can be placed here.
- Ensure nothing protrudes through the bottom of the rack to block the middle spray arm rotation.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows the top rack with items like cups and glasses, emphasizing not to cover the central funnel.
Loading the Bottom Rack
- Ensure tall items do not block spray arm rotation.
- Place plates and platters so they do not touch.
- Place bowls, casseroles, and sauce pans with the soiled surface facing down or toward the center. Tilt slightly for better drainage.
- Ensure pan handles do not protrude through the bottom of the rack and block spray arm rotation.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows the bottom rack loaded with plates, bowls, and pans, highlighting proper placement for drainage and spray arm clearance.
Loading the Silverware Basket
- Mix spoons, forks, and knives to prevent nesting for better cleaning and drying.
- For safety, load sharp knives and forks with handles up.
- Ensure nothing protrudes through the bottom of the basket or rack to block the spray arm.
- Do not mix silver and stainless steel to avoid damaging the silver finish.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows a silverware basket filled with mixed utensils.
Adding a Dish
To add or remove items after the wash cycle starts:
- Unlatch the door and wait a few seconds until wash action stops before opening.
- Add the item and wait a few seconds to allow cold air to slowly expand inside.
- Close the door firmly to latch and resume the cycle.
Dishwasher Dispenser & Detergents
Filling the Detergent Dispenser
The dispenser has one covered and one uncovered cup. Detergent in the uncovered cup releases when the door closes. The covered cup opens automatically.
- Use only fresh automatic dishwashing detergent. Other types can cause oversudsing.
- Add detergent just before starting the cycle.
- Store detergent in a cool, dry location; moist or caked detergent may not dissolve properly.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows the detergent dispenser with "Pre Wash Cup" and "Main Wash Cup" labeled, along with a "Cover".
How much Detergent to use
Detergent usage depends on water hardness (measured in grains per gallon). Too little detergent can cause poor cleaning and spotting. Too much in soft water can cause etching.
Detergent Usage Guide:
Cycle | Soft Water (0-3 grains) | Medium Hard Water (4-8 grains) | Hard Water (9-12 grains) | Very Hard Water* (over 12 grains) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Heavy Wash or Normal Wash | 2 teaspoons (each cup-1/4 full) | 5 teaspoons (each cup-fill to line above "Regular") | 8 teaspoons (each cup-completely full) | Each Cup-Completely Full (water softener recommended) |
Light Wash | 2 teaspoons (Main Wash cup-1/4 full) | 5 teaspoons (Main Wash cup-fill to line above "Regular") | 8 teaspoons (Main Wash cup-completely full) | Main Wash Cup-Completely Full (water softener recommended) |
Quick Rinse | No Detergent | No Detergent | No Detergent | No Detergent (water softener recommended) |
*Note: For very hard water, a water softener is recommended. You may need to add extra detergent (1 teaspoon per grain above 12) directly to the tub bottom before starting the cycle.
Dishwasher Dispenser & Detergents (continued)
Rinse Aid
Rinse aid improves drying and reduces water spots. Water "sheets" off dishes instead of forming droplets.
The dispenser, located next to the detergent cup, automatically releases rinse aid during the last rinse. If spotting or poor drying occurs, increase rinse aid by rotating the dial to a higher number. The indicator shows when it's full (dark) or needs refilling (clear).
To add rinse aid: Turn dispenser cap 1/4 turn counterclockwise, lift, pour rinse aid to the fill level, and replace cap. Do not overfill, as this can cause oversudsing. Wipe up spills.
The dispenser holds enough for 35 to 140 washes.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows the rinse aid dispenser with labels for "Dispenser Opening", "Indicator", "RINSE AID", "FILL LEVEL", and "Adjustable setting", and "Dispenser Cap".
Factors Affecting Performance
Water Pressure
The hot water line must provide 20-120 psi. Low pressure may occur during laundry or showers; wait until water use is reduced.
Water Temperature
Hot water (at least 120°F / 49°C) is needed for best results.
- To check temperature: Run hot water faucet nearest the dishwasher for several minutes to clear cool water from pipes. Hold a thermometer in the stream.
- If below 120°F (49°C), have a qualified person adjust the hot water heater thermostat.
Important: Before starting a cycle, run hot water through the faucet to clear cool water from the pipe.
Care and Cleaning
[!] WARNING: Burn Hazard. Allow heating element to cool before cleaning the interior. Failure to do so can result in burns.
- Outside: Wipe with a mild nonabrasive detergent and water. Rinse and dry.
- Inside: The interior is self-cleaning with normal use. Clean around the tub gasket with a damp cloth if needed.
- Filter: The filter is self-cleaning. A glass trap collects debris. To remove items, grasp the handle, lift out, empty, and replace.
Note: Hard water can cause lime deposit buildup. See "Removing Spots and Film" section for cleaning.
Overfill Protector: Located in the left front corner of the tub, it prevents overfilling. Clean occasionally with household cleaner containing vinegar or bleach. It should move up and down freely about one inch. If it doesn't move, lift and clean underneath.
Care of Drain Air Gap: If installed, ensure it is clean for proper draining. It's usually mounted on the countertop and inspected by removing the cover. This is not part of the dishwasher and not covered by warranty.
[!] CAUTION: Property Damage Hazard. Freezing temperatures can rupture water lines. Ensure all supply and circulating lines are protected.
Winterizing
If the dishwasher will be left in an unheated place, protect it from freezing. Have a qualified person perform the following:
To Disconnect Service:
- Turn off electrical power at the supply source (remove fuses or trip breaker).
- Shut off water supply.
- Place a pan under the inlet valve. Disconnect the water line and drain into the pan.
- Disconnect the drain line from the pump and drain into the pan.
Note: Refer to Installation Instructions for details.
To Restore Service:
- Reconnect water, drain, and electrical power supply.
- Turn on water and electrical power.
- Fill both detergent cups and run through a NORMAL cycle.
- Check connections for leaks.
Note: Refer to Installation Instructions for details.
Solutions to Common Dishwashing Problems
Review this list before calling for service.
Food Soils Left on Dishes
- Choose a longer wash cycle.
- Check rack loading for proper placement (avoid nesting).
- Ensure home water pressure is adequate (20-120 psi).
- Verify incoming water temperature is at least 120°F (49°C).
- Check water hardness; a softener may be needed for very hard water.
- Use fresh detergent.
- Ensure the top rack funnel is not blocked.
- Make sure items do not block spray arms.
Dishes Not Dry
- Select HEAT DRY ON option.
- Ensure the rinse aid dispenser is filled.
- Increase the amount of rinse aid.
- Verify incoming water temperature is at least 120°F (49°C).
- Check for proper loading (avoid nesting).
- Plastic items may need towel drying.
- Cups with concave bottoms can collect water.
Dishware Chipped
- Load with care and do not overload.
- Place delicate items in the top rack.
- Place glasses securely against pins, not over them.
- Load items so they are secure and do not jar loose when moving racks. Move racks slowly.
- Ensure tall glasses and stemware clear the top of the tub when the rack is pushed in.
- Fine antique china and crystal should be hand-washed.
Glassware/Flatware Spotted or Cloudy
- Check water hardness; a softener may be needed for very hard water.
- Water temperature may be low; avoid extreme temperatures.
- Avoid overloading and improper loading.
- Use fresh detergent; old detergent is ineffective.
- Check that the proper amount of detergent is used.
- Ensure home water pressure is adequate (20-120 psi).
Dishware Stained or Discolored
- Tea and coffee stains: Hand wash in a solution of 1/2 cup bleach and 1 quart warm water. Rinse thoroughly.
- Iron deposits: Can cause yellow/brown film. A special filter may correct this.
- Aluminum utensils: Can leave marks from rubbing. Load properly.
- High acid foods: Can discolor stainless steel/plastics if left for long periods. Rinse by hand if not running the dishwasher immediately.
- Mixing stainless steel and silver: Can cause pitting of stainless steel. Avoid mixing.
Etching
- Using too much detergent in soft/softened water causes this film.
- Adjust detergent amount based on water hardness.
- Lower water temperature.
- Use the HEAT DRY OFF option.
Dishwasher Won't Fill
- Is water supply turned on?
- Does the overfill protector move up and down freely? Normal water fill covers the filter area.
Dishwasher Leaks
- Use only fresh, recommended detergent. Measure carefully. Try a different brand.
- Spilled rinse aid can cause foam and overflow. Wipe up spills.
- Check that the dishwasher is level.
Normal Sounds You Will Hear
- Sounds include water fill, circulation, and motor.
- A sound change is normal when the wash action switches between spray arms.
- A pause (no sound) is normal when switching between spray arms.
Water in Bottom of Tub
Water left after a cycle is not normal. The dishwasher may not be draining properly (See Dishwasher Does Not Drain Properly).
Vapor at Vent
Water vapor escaping from the vent during the drying cycle is normal.
Dishwasher Won't Run
- Check if circuit breaker is tripped or fuse is blown.
- Ensure water supply is turned on.
- Check if cycle is set correctly.
- Ensure the door is closed and latched.
Dishwasher Does Not Drain Properly
- If connected to a food waste disposer, ensure it is empty.
- Check if the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer inlet.
- Check if the drain hose is kinked.
- Ensure the cycle is complete, not paused.
Detergent Left in Cups
- Detergent may be old; discard and use fresh.
- Ensure water action can reach the dispenser.
- Check if the cycle has completed.
- Make sure items do not prevent the dispenser from opening.
Dishwasher Has an Odor
- Soiled dishes left too long can cause odor. Use QUICK RINSE or rinse by hand.
- A "new" smell when first installed is normal.
- Check if the unit is draining properly.
Stains on Tub Interior
Washing dishes with tomato-based soil can cause a pink/orange appearance. This is temporary and will fade. Pre-rinsing or using HEAT DRY OFF can reduce staining.
Removing Spots and Film
Hard water can cause lime deposit buildup. To remove buildup, spots, and film:
- Load clean dishes (no metal utensils or silverware).
- Do not add detergent.
- Turn dial to HEAVY WASH. Close and latch door to start.
- Allow to run for 25 minutes to reach the main wash portion.
- Unlatch and open door. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher.
- Close and latch door and allow the cycle to finish.
Note: If conditions persist, consider a home water softener.
