UniStream Local Expansion Adapter Kit Technical Specifications

Models: UAG-XKxxx, UAG-XKPxxx, UAG-CX-XKPxxx, UAG-XKPLxxxx

This guide provides specifications for Unitronics' Short Range and Long Range Local Expansion Adapter Kits for Uni-I/O™. These kits increase the number of I/Os connected to a single UniStream™ controller by linking it to an additional row of Uni-I/O™ modules.

All Local Expansion Adapter Kits include a Base unit, an End unit, and a connecting cable. Two adapter series are available:

Power Supply

UniStream controller panels with a CPU-for-Panel can supply power to a maximum of 8 modules, Uni-I/O™ and/or Uni-COM™. Adapters that do not have a power supply draw power from UniStream and supply it to the modules. This means, for example, that if there are 3 modules snapped onto the panel, an additional 5 can be added via this type of adapter.

Adapters with an integrated power supply must be connected to a 24VDC power source. These adapters can then supply up to 16 modules with power, regardless of any modules mounted on the panel.

Important Note: The Base and End Units of the Short-range and Long-range models look similar but are not interchangeable; do not mix them.

UniStream™ controllers that comprise an I/O Expansion Jack (compatible with UAG-CX)

The number of modules in the next table refers only to the modules connected to the adapter. These controllers lack the DIN-rail structure and cannot be installed with Uni-COM or Uni-I/O.

Daisy-Chaining: Extending and Expanding I/Os

Up to five Local Expansion Adapters may be chained to each other. The maximum number of I/O modules that can be connected to a single controller is:

UniStream can be expanded locally in a single cabinet, using Short range Adapters of up to 3 meters each (UAG-XKxxxx, UAG-XKPxxxx and UAG-CX-XKPxxxx). It can also be expanded further to another cabinet, using the Long Range Expansion Adapter (UAG-XKLxxxx).

Daisy-chaining Visualizations

Single Cabinet Configuration: A diagram shows a UniStream controller (CPU I/O) connected to a series of I/O modules. Following these, a UAG-XKPxxxx adapter is connected, leading to more I/O modules (up to 16 units). This setup illustrates local expansion within one cabinet.

Two Cabinets Configuration (Long-range Kit): A diagram depicts two separate cabinets. The first cabinet contains a UniStream controller (CPU I/O) connected to I/O modules, followed by a UAG-XKPxxxx adapter and more I/O modules (up to 16 units). This cabinet is then connected via a "Long-range Kit" (UAG-XKL) to a second cabinet. The second cabinet contains a UAG-XKPxxxx adapter connected to I/O modules (up to 16 units), demonstrating expansion across two cabinets using a long-range adapter.

Daisy-chaining Rules

To connect a UniStream™ controller to more than one row of I/O modules via Local I/O Expansion adapters, the following rules must be followed:

UniStream™ comprising a DIN-rail structure (compatible with UAG-XK)

UniStream™ controllers comprising an I/O Expansion Jack (compatible with UAG-CX)

UniStream™ controllers of both series

Configuration Examples

Notes:

  1. All examples use the USP-104-B10 10.4″ HMI panel.
  2. The amount of modules in all examples relates to Uni-I/O modules. Uni-I/O modules can be mixed with Uni-I/O Wide modules, considering that 1 Uni-I/O Wide module equals 1½ Uni-I/O module.

Configuring for maximum I/Os

A diagram illustrates the maximum number of I/O modules connected to a single UniStream™ controller using Uni-I/O modules and 5 Local I/O Expansion adapters with power supplies. The setup shows a CPU I/O unit connected to a series of I/O modules (up to 5 units). This is followed by a UAG-XKPxxxx adapter connected to more I/O modules (up to 16 units). This chain continues with a UAG-XKL (Long Range) adapter, then another UAG-XKPxxxx adapter with I/O modules (up to 16 units), and finally another UAG-XKPxxxx adapter with I/O modules (up to 16 units). This demonstrates a complex daisy-chaining configuration for maximum I/O expansion.

Configurations with Short-range adapter, no Power Supply (UAG-XKxxxx)

A diagram shows a CPU I/O unit connected to I/O modules (up to 5 units). If a UAG-XKxxxx adapter is the only adapter connected to the controller, it is shown connected to the I/O modules, supporting up to 8 modules in total.

If a UAG-XKxxxx follows another adapter with an integrated power supply (e.g., UAG-XKPxxx, UAG-CX-XKPxxx, or UAG-XKLxxxx), the support capacity of that powered module limits the number of Uni-I/Os that can be connected to the UAG-XKxxxx; in any event, no more than 8 Uni-I/Os can follow a UAG-XKxxxx adapter. A diagram illustrates this: a UAG-XKPxxx/UAG-CX-XKPxxx/UAG-XKLxxxx adapter is connected to I/O modules (up to 16 units), which then connects to a UAG-XKxxxx adapter, which in turn connects to I/O modules (up to 8 units).

NOTE: Each combination in the right table can be used with each combination in the left table. They are independent of each other and the total number of I/O modules that are supported is the sum of the two tables (Maximum of 85).

Note that in the case of UniStream™ controllers comprising an I/O Expansion Jack, the UAG-CX-XKPxxx must be used, and it must be the adapter directly connected to the controller.
