LeapStart 3D Parent User Guide
This guide provides essential information for setting up and using the LeapFrog LeapStart 3D interactive learning system.
LeapStart 3D Overview
The LeapStart 3D learning system is an interactive educational toy designed for children. It works with activity books that come alive with 3D animations when touched with the included stylus.
LeapStart Features
The LeapStart 3D device includes:
- Book holders: Designed to hold activity books.
- Headphone jack: Compatible with most headphones (not included).
- On/Off button: To power the device on and off.
- Power light: Indicates when the device is on (green light).
- Volume control: To adjust audio levels.
- Animation Panel: Displays 3D animations from compatible books.
- Carrying handle: For portability.
- Battery compartment: Requires 2 AA batteries (not included).
- USB port: For connecting to a computer for setup and downloads.
- Age-appropriate stylus: Used to interact with books and the device.

Get Started
- Power Up/Connect: Insert 2 AA batteries (not included) and connect the LeapStart system to your computer using the USB cable.
- Set Up: Install the LeapFrog Connect application from leapfrog.com/connect.
- Register: Create a LeapFrog parent account to register your device.
- Download Content: Download companion audio and video for your Sampler Book and any purchased LeapStart Books.
- Play & Learn: Your child is now ready to use the LeapStart system.
Get Started with Your Sampler Book
- Download the updated Sampler Book audio and video by following the "Get Started" steps.
- Press the On/Off button. The green power light will illuminate when the LeapStart device is on.
- Snap the Sampler Activity Book into the book holders on the LeapStart system. Touch the tip of the stylus to any image or word. You can also touch the tip of the stylus to any word or image on the Interactive Liner to play.
- Download Companion Audio and Video for Purchased LeapStart Books:
- Turn on the LeapStart device and touch a page.
- If not already done, follow the instructions under "Get Started" to install the LeapFrog Connect Application.
- Follow the LeapFrog Connect Application instructions to set up your LeapStart system and download content for your books. The power light will flash green during downloads.
- Eject and disconnect the LeapStart device from your computer.
- To begin playing, touch the LeapStart stylus tip to any image or word in your LeapStart activity book.
- Note: Only books with the LeapStart® 3D logo feature animations.
Auto-Shut Down
The device will automatically turn off if it is closed for 5 seconds.
Instructions for Care and Use
This product is intended for indoor, dry-location use only. Avoid using it near sinks or wet areas. Do not spill food or liquids on the product, as this may render it inoperable. If the unit gets wet, unplug all cables, turn it OFF, and allow it to dry thoroughly before reuse. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat source for drying.
Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Operate the device in temperatures between 5°C (40°F) and 38°C (100°F). Do not leave the product in a parked car, as internal temperatures can exceed acceptable storage limits. Extreme temperatures can shorten battery life or cause temporary malfunction.
Handle the product with care. Avoid dropping it. Never disassemble, crush, puncture, microwave, incinerate, insert foreign objects, or paint the product. Clean hands before handling if exposed to lotions or chemicals. To clean, disconnect all cords and use a slightly damp cloth with cold water. Do not use soap, detergent, or other chemicals. Never submerge the unit in water. Allow to dry thoroughly before reuse.
Important Safety Instructions
- General Safety: Routinely check the toy for proper and safe condition. Remove from use if any damage or broken parts are found. To be used under the direct supervision of an adult.
- Hearing Protection: Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can cause permanent hearing loss. Listen at lower volumes for shorter periods. Set volume in a quiet environment. If you cannot hear nearby speech, lower the volume. Limit listening time to 90 minutes, followed by a quiet period. If you experience ringing in your ears or muffled speech, stop use and have your hearing checked.
- Choking Hazards: Keep the stylus tip away from eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. Not for children under 18 months. Do not allow children to eat or drink while playing to prevent choking.
- Stylus Light: Do not look directly into the stylus light. Not for children under 18 months.
- Adult Supervision: Adult supervision is required at all times while children are playing with the product. Parents of children with injuries or limitations should consult a doctor before use.
- Packing Materials: Discard all packing materials (tape, plastic sheets, locks, tags) for the child's safety.
- Product Weight: When books are installed, the product may be heavy for some children; exercise care.
- USB Cable Safety: The USB cable can be a strangulation hazard. Keep out of reach of children under 3 years of age. The USB cable should only be used by an adult for connecting to a computer and must be removed by the adult before the child uses the product.
- Age Recommendation: For children ages 2-7 years and up. Not suitable for children under 18 months.
Battery Information
Requirements: Requires 2 AA (LR6) alkaline batteries. Batteries are not included.
Battery Removal and Installation
- Open the battery door using a screwdriver, coin, or other household tool.
- Remove any used or spent batteries.
- Install new batteries, observing the polarity diagram (+/-) inside the battery compartment.
- Replace the battery door securely.
Battery Safety Precautions
- Batteries are small objects and can be a choking hazard for young children.
- Batteries must be replaced by an adult.
- Always follow the polarity diagram (+/-) in the battery compartment.
- Promptly remove dead batteries from the toy to prevent leaking.
- Dispose of used batteries properly.
- Remove batteries for prolonged storage.
- Use only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended.
- DO NOT incinerate used batteries.
- DO NOT dispose of batteries in fire, as they may explode or leak.
- DO NOT mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries (e.g., alkaline/standard).
- DO NOT recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
- DO NOT short-circuit the supply terminals.
- Rechargeable batteries must be removed from the toy before charging and charged only under adult supervision.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device. Measures to correct interference include re-orienting the antenna, increasing separation between equipment and receiver, connecting to a different outlet, or consulting a dealer/technician.
USB Cable: Use only the provided LeapFrog USB cable. Using other cables may exceed regulatory emissions limits. The USB cable is not a toy. Disconnect from USB before cleaning.
Environmental Phenomena: The unit may malfunction due to radio-frequency interference. Normal operation should resume when interference stops. If not, power cycle or remove/reinstall batteries. Electrostatic discharge may cause malfunction and memory loss, requiring a battery reset.
