Choosing Car Seat Mode
WARNING: Measure your child's weight and height (DO NOT guess) before choosing this car seat's mode.
Your child's height, weight, and age determine how the car seat should be placed in the vehicle. Children vary widely in body size, shape, and temperament—please consult your doctor before switching between any modes within the limits and fit requirements of the car seat.
State Laws: Please be certain to follow your state's laws regarding car seat use.
American Academy of Pediatrics Recommendations:
- Infants and Toddlers: Should ride in a rear-facing car seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat.
- Toddlers and Preschoolers: Once they are facing forward, children should use a forward-facing car seat with a harness for as long as possible, until they reach the height and weight limits for their car seats.
- School-Aged Children: Once they have outgrown their forward-facing car seat, children should use a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle's lap and shoulder seat belt fits properly. This is often when they have reached at least 4 feet 9 inches in height and are 8 to 12 years old.
- Older Children: All children younger than 13 years should be restrained in the rear seats of vehicles for optimal protection.
Rear-Facing Mode: 5-40 lb (2.3-18 kg) and 19-40 in. (48-101.6 cm). See Rear-Facing Section (PAGE 17) and Rear-Facing Child Fit & Vehicle Install (PAGE 19).

LATCH: Lower Anchor Belt
Your vehicle's features may differ from pictured.
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) is a universal system for installing car seats without vehicle seat belts. LATCH can ONLY be used in vehicles with designated lower anchor bars. Most vehicles manufactured after September 2002 have LATCH bars. Check your owner's manual for seating positions.
To Remove Lower Anchor Belt from Vehicle's Lower Anchor Bars:
- Remove belt tension by pushing down on adjuster side of base.
- Press adjuster button to loosen belt.
- Squeeze spring lever on hooks, push hooks back into seat, rotate to side.
- Pull hooks off vehicle's lower anchor bars.
To Store Lower Anchor Belt: Lower anchor belt MUST be stored in its location when using vehicle belts or when base is not installed. Gather belt and place into storage location.
To Remove Lower Anchor Belt from Storage Location in Base: Pull LATCH: Lower Anchor Belt out of storage location.
WARNING: DO NOT use both the lower anchor belt and vehicle belt at the same time.
Vehicle Belts
Your vehicle's features may differ from pictured.
If LATCH is not an option or if your child weighs more than 25 lb (11 kg) in Rear-Facing Mode or 30 lb (14 kg) in Forward-Facing Mode, you MUST use the vehicle seat belt system.
Not all vehicle belts and seating positions work with car seats. Follow these steps to understand how to lock a car seat with a vehicle belt.
- You MUST Review Your Vehicle Owner's Manual: Manual will indicate which belts and seating positions are compatible.
- Check How This Car Seat Will Be Locked Into Place: The vehicle belt MUST NOT loosen after tightening. There must be a way to lock the vehicle belt. This can be done by using the seat belt's retractor (step 3) or latch plate (step 4).
- Lock Off: When used correctly, this base's Lock Off will lock the vehicle belt.
- Check Retractor: Retractors pull seat belts into stored positions and lock the belt.
Types of Retractors:
- Switchable Retractor: MUST be switched to locking mode. To switch: Slowly pull shoulder belt all the way out, let it retract 1-2 in. (2.5-5 cm). You should hear a ratcheting sound. Gently pull belt to test lock.
- Automatic Locking Retractor: Always locks. Locks automatically after slowly pulling belt out halfway and letting it retract 1-2 in. (2.5-5 cm).
- Emergency Locking Retractor: Locks only during a sudden stop or collision. Check latch plates (Step 5) to determine if your seat belt's latch plate can lock the belt.
Check Latch Plates: Latch plates go into the buckle. To see if latch plate locks: 1. Buckle Vehicle Belt. 2. Firmly Tug Lap Portion of Seat Belt While Pulling It Up. If belt does not slide through latch plate, it's locked. If latch plate slides up and down belt, it is a sliding latch plate.
i Never Use the Following With This Car Seat: Emergency Locking Retractor Lap Only Belt, Inflatable Seat Belts.
Top Tether
Your vehicle's features may differ from pictured.
When anchors are available, you MUST always attach, adjust, and secure the tether (top anchorage) strap when installing the car seat. Tethers improve installation and stability and reduce injury risk. Attach tether hook to the anchor designated by your vehicle manufacturer. If seating position lacks an anchor, use a different position or consult dealer/mechanic.
Tighten Top Tether Strap Until Tether Door Is Flush With Base As Shown.
WARNING: Using this child restraint without the tether strap anchored as required is misuse and could result in serious injury or death. DO NOT fasten multiple tether hooks on the same tether anchor.
WARNING: NEVER take your child out of the restraint while the vehicle is moving. NEVER leave your child unattended. DO NOT use restraint with damaged or missing parts or cut/frayed/damaged harnesses. DO NOT substitute parts or modify restraint. DO NOT lubricate buckles/fasteners. DO NOT use accessory except those approved by Dorel Juvenile Group. NEVER allow child to play with restraint; it is not a toy. DO NOT remove or cover warning labels. This restraint is certified for passenger vehicles ONLY. DO NOT use in boats, motorcycles, or cargo vans/buses without seat belts or tether anchors. Read all instructions for additional warnings.
Child Restraint Use
WARNING: NEVER place a child rear-facing in a seating position with an active frontal air bag. Consult vehicle owner's manual for air bag/child restraint use. Use child restraint only on forward-facing vehicle seats. DO NOT use on side-facing or rear-facing seats. For vehicles without a back seat, refer to owner's manual.
Children are safer in rear seating positions. Rear seating positions are safer whether you have air bags, advanced air bags, or no air bags.
If unsure where to place car seat: Consult owner's manual; Contact Dorel Juvenile Group Consumer Care; Visit local Child Passenger Inspection Station (https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/car-seats-and-booster-seats).
Installation in Vehicle:
To avoid child being seriously burned:
- Park in shade or where sun does not directly hit car seat.
- Cover car seat with sheet/blanket when not in use.
- Check for hot seat/buckles before placing child.
To protect vehicle upholstery:
- Use accessory approved by Dorel Juvenile Group or a single layer towel underneath and behind car seat.
WARNING: Check vehicle belt or lower anchor belt before each use. Use only if belt can be tightened properly and locked securely. Even when unoccupied, child restraint MUST be firmly secured. In a crash or sudden stop, an unsecured restraint could injure occupants.
Replacement & Expiration
WARNING: DO NOT risk your child's safety. Dorel Juvenile Group strongly recommends replacing the car seat even after a minor crash, even if unoccupied.
Replacement After a Minor Crash: According to NHTSA, a crash is minor if ALL are true: vehicle drives away, no damage to nearest door, no passengers injured, no airbags deployed, no visible damage to car seat. If ALL criteria met, replacement may not be needed. If any criteria not met or uncertain, replace immediately.
Replacement After a Moderate to Severe Crash: MUST replace if involved in a moderate to severe crash. Car seat is intended for a single crash. Parts absorb crash energy and can deform/weaken. Damage is not always visible. Damaged car seat MUST be replaced immediately.
Expiration: On the bottom of the car seat, there is a date of manufacture label. DO NOT use this car seat more than 10 years after the date of manufacture.
