Product Overview
This manual provides instructions for the Retevis RT628 two-way radio. It covers installation, operation, and additional features to help users effectively communicate.
The device features an antenna, display, and various buttons for operation. Key components include the PTT (Push to Talk) button, channel selection buttons, menu button, and volume control.
1. Installation
1.1 Removing the Belt Clip
To remove the belt clip, pull the belt clip lock of the PMR device. While pulling the belt clip lock, push the belt clip upwards simultaneously.
1.2 Attaching the Belt Clip
Slide the belt clip into the designated slot. A click indicates that the belt clip is locked in place.
1.3 Inserting the Batteries
Caution: Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries. Incorrect insertion can damage both the batteries and the device.
- Slide the battery compartment cover downwards.
- Insert the rechargeable batteries according to the indicated orientation.
- Close the battery compartment cover.
1.4 Battery Indicator
The battery symbol indicates the battery charge level, from full to empty. When the battery is low, the radio will beep regularly after releasing the button. The radio will turn off automatically when the voltage drops below a certain level to protect the battery.
2. Operation
2.1 Turning the Device On/Off
- To turn on: Press and hold the Power/On-Off button until the LCD display activates and the current channel is shown.
- To turn off: Press and hold the Power/On-Off button until the LCD display clears. A beep confirms each action.
2.2 Adjusting the Volume
The volume is indicated by vertical bars on the LCD display. You can adjust the volume while the device is operating or in standby mode.
- Press the Up button (▲) to increase the volume, or the Down button (▼) to decrease it.
2.3 Changing Channels
The device has 8 channels. To communicate with other PMR devices, all devices must be set to the same channel.
- Press the Menu button once. The current channel number will blink on the LCD.
- Press the Up (▲) or Down (▼) buttons to select the desired channel. Channels can be changed from 1 to 8 or in reverse order.
- Press the PTT button to confirm the setting.

2.4 Setting CTCSS Sub-channel and DCS Code
Each channel has 38 sub-channels (1-38) and 83 digital codes (39-121) that allow you to set up a user group for a shared channel, making communication inaccessible to others. When a sub-channel is set, you can only communicate with other PMR users whose devices are set to the same main and sub-channel.
The sub-channel function can be turned off by setting the sub-channel to 0 (Null). You can communicate with any PMR user who has the same channel set and the sub-channel function turned off.
- Press the Menu button twice. The current CTCSS sub-channel number and DCS code will blink on the LCD.
- Press the Up (▲) or Down (▼) buttons to select one of the 38 sub-channels (1-38) and the desired DCS code (39-121).
- Press the PTT button to confirm the sub-channel selection.
2.5 Receiving
When the device is on and not transmitting, it is in receive mode. It will receive a signal on the current channel.
2.6 Transmitting
- Press and hold the PTT (Push to Talk) button to transmit your speech. The transmit icon (▶) will appear on the LCD.
- Hold the device vertically with the microphone about 5 cm from your mouth. Speak at a normal volume while holding the PTT button.
- Release the PTT button after finishing your speech.
2.7 Monitoring
The monitor function searches for weaker signals on the current channel.
- Press and hold the MON button. Your device will receive all signals on the current channel, including background noise.
- Release the MON button to end the monitoring function.
2.8 Call Alert
Your PMR device can alert you to an incoming signal with an audible ringtone.
2.8.1 Call Ringtone
You can send a call ringtone to other PMR users to indicate your desire to communicate. Press the Call button (♪). A ringtone will sound for approximately 5 seconds, and the symbol (♪) will be displayed on the LCD. Other devices in range set to the same channel and sub-channel will hear the ringtone.
2.8.2 Selecting a Call Ringtone
The device is equipped with 10 different call ringtones.
- Press the Menu button three times. The symbol "CA" and a blinking "1" will appear on the LCD.
- Press the Up (▲) or Down (▼) buttons to select the desired ringtone. The corresponding ringtone will play as you cycle through them.
- Press the PTT button to confirm your selection.
2.9 Setting VOX (Voice Activated) Sensitivity
In VOX mode, the device transmits only when activated by your voice or ambient sounds. It will transmit for an additional 2 seconds after you finish speaking.
The VOX sensitivity level is indicated by a number on the LCD. At the highest sensitivity level, the device picks up quiet sounds (including background noise); at the lowest level, only loud sounds are picked up.
- Press the Menu button four times. The symbol (⚙️) and a blinking "1" will appear on the LCD.
- Press the Up button (▲) to set the VOX sensitivity to the highest level (3).
- Press the PTT button to confirm your setting. Press PTT and turn on the radio. As long as the VOX function is active, the symbol (⚡) will be continuously displayed on the LCD.
- To deactivate the VOX function, press the PTT button until " " appears on the LCD.
Note: VOX operation is not recommended in a loud or windy environment.
2.10 Setting the Dual Channel Monitoring Mode
Your device can monitor two channels: the current channel and one other channel. When the device detects a signal on either channel, it will pause to receive the signal.
- Press the Menu button six times. The symbol "CH" and a blinking "OF" will appear on the LCD.
- Press the Up (▲) or Down (▼) buttons to select the second channel (1-8, excluding the current channel) to be monitored.
- Press the PTT button to confirm the setting.
2.11 Setting the Squelch 1-6
- Press the Menu button seven times until "SL" displays.
- Press UP or DOWN to select the reception sensitivity level:
- 01 = High reception sensitivity
- 02-05 = Medium reception sensitivity
- 06 = Low reception sensitivity
2.12 Setting TX POWER-LO / HALLO
- Press the Menu button eight times until "pr" displays.
- Press UP or DOWN to select the LO or HALLO level.
- Press PTT to save the TX POWER-LO / HALLO setting.
3. Additional Functions
3.1 Key Lock
The key lock function allows the user to disable the Up (▲) and Down (▼) buttons, as well as the Menu buttons, to prevent accidental changes to PMR settings.
- To activate the key lock function, press and hold the Menu button until the key lock symbol (?) appears on the LCD.
- To deactivate the key lock function, press and hold the Menu button until the key lock symbol (?) disappears from the LCD.
Note: The PTT button, Call button (♪), and Power/On-Off button remain functional even when the key lock is activated.
3.2 LCD Backlight
Each time a button is pressed (except for the PTT and Call buttons), the LCD backlight is activated for 10 seconds.
3.3 Microphone, Headphone
The device is equipped with an additional microphone and headphone jack on the top of the device.
