Installation Steps
Step 1: Remove OEM Front Heat Shield
Remove the OEM front metal heat shield from the vehicle. [See Figure 1]
Step 2: Remove Rear Underbody Shielding
Remove the rear portion of the OEM plastic underbody shield. Carefully let it hang down. The entire panel does not need to be removed. [See Figures 2-1 and 2-2]
Step 3: Lower Underbody Panels
Remove the hardware and lower the OEM driver and passenger rear underbody panels covering the hangers. [See Figures 3-1 and 3-2]
Step 4: Disconnect Front Pipe
Remove the 3 bolts from the OEM exhaust flange that attaches the front pipe to the OEM downpipe. [See Figure 4]
Step 5: Remove Middle Exhaust Hanger
Remove the middle rubber exhaust hanger from the exhaust tube. Note: The rubber mount must be reinstalled with the AWE exhaust in the same direction as when removed. [See Figure 5]
Step 6: Support and Remove Rear Hangers
Support the rear section of the exhaust to prevent falling while removing the remainder of the hangers. Remove the 2 rubber hangers toward the rear of the muffler section. [See Figure 6]
Step 7: Remove Remaining Rear Hangers
Remove the 2 remaining rubber exhaust hangers in the rear. Having a second person will make the removal easier and safer. The exhaust may now be removed. [See Figures 7-1 and 7-2]
Step 8: Remove Front Hanger Grommet
Remove the rubber hanger for the front section of the exhaust. This hanger grommet can be completely removed from the car as it will not be needed for reinstalling the new AWE exhaust. [See Figure 8]
Step 9: Disconnect Downpipe Flange
Remove the 3 bolts for the OEM exhaust flange to downpipe. Pre-soak the bolts with penetration oil to aid in removal. [See Figure 9]
Step 10: Remove Front Tunnel Heat Shield
Remove the OEM front tunnel heat shield from the middle of the car to allow installation of the AWE front pipe. This heat shield will be reinstalled after the new AWE front pipe is installed. [See Figure 10-1 and 10-2]
Step 11: Remove OEM Front Pipe
Remove the OEM front pipe. Save the metal O-ring gasket from the front of the downpipe, as it will be needed for the installation of your new AWE exhaust. [See Figure 10]
Step 12: Clean Downpipe Surface
Ensure the OEM downpipe surface is clean and free of debris to allow an airtight seal with your new AWE exhaust. [See Figure 12]
Step 13: Loosen Engine Mount Bolt
Remove the engine mount bolt. This will allow you to push up the engine slightly for fitment of the AWE front pipe. The engine will not move significantly, and there is no need to support the engine. [See Figures 13-1 and 13-2]
Step 14: Install AWE Front Pipe
Start installing your AWE exhaust front pipe (part C26) by rotating the tube up and over as needed to get it into place. [See Figures 14-1 and 14-2]
Step 15: Reinstall Engine Mount Bolt
Reinstall the OEM motor mount bolt removed earlier. Torque the bolt to factory specifications. [See Figure 15]
Step 16: Install OEM O-Ring
Install the OEM O-ring that was removed from the factory exhaust front pipe. The O-ring can be installed in either direction. [See Figure 16]
Step 17: Secure Front Pipe to Downpipe
Line up the 3 studs with your new AWE front pipe. Install and secure the factory nuts removed earlier. Torque nuts to factory specification. [See Figures 17-1 and 17-2]
Step 18: Reinstall Front Heat Shield
Reinstall the OEM metal heat shield that was removed earlier, using the same hardware. [See Figures 18-1 and 18-2]
Step 19: Install Resonated Section Hanger
When installing the OEM rubber hanger grommet, ensure the orientation is the same as factory. The shape of the rubber hanger is different top to bottom. [See Figure 19]
Step 20: Install Resonated Section
Install your new AWE resonated section (part C28) with the supplied Accu-Seal clamp. The Accu-Seal clamp bolt must face the driver side and down to allow access. [See Figures 20-1 and 20-2]
Step 21: Install Mid Section
Install your new AWE mid section (part C50) with the supplied Accu-Seal clamps. Use a pole jack to support the tube as there are no hangers for this section. [See Figure 21]
Step 22: Identify Rear Hanger Locations
When installing your AWE rear section, use the appropriate exhaust hanger locations:
- Track exhausts use hangers 1 and 4.
- Touring exhausts use hangers 1, 2, 3, and 4.
[See Figure 22]
Step 23: Attach Rear Hangers to Rear Section
Install the OEM rear most hangers onto the rear section of your AWE exhaust (part C30 for Touring, part C32 for Track) while it is still off the car. [See Figure 23]
Step 24: Install Touring Rear Section
Touring exhausts only: Install the supplied Accu-Seal clamp onto the rear AWE Touring rear section (part C30). There are 4 OEM rubber hangers on the touring system to be installed. [See Figure 24]
Step 25: Install Track Rear Section
Track exhausts only: Install your rear AWE Track rear section (part C32) with the supplied Accu-Seal clamp. Only the 2 outside OEM hangers are used for the track system. [See Figure 25]
Step 26: Accu-Seal Clamp Installation
It is crucial to install each section and Accu-Seal clamp correctly to prevent loose joints, exhaust leaks between tubing connections, and rattles.
- Arrow A: Shows the expanded pipe and the pre-installed Accu-Seal clamp being brought up to the corresponding pipe.
- Arrow B: Shows the overlapping pipe installed correctly over the corresponding pipe.
- Arrow C: Shows the Accu-Seal clamp being brought to the edge of the expanded pipe.
NOTES: Do not torque any Accu-Seal clamp until the entire exhaust has been installed and adjusted. Torque specification is a minimum of 60 ft/lbs. [See Figure 26]
Step 27: Final Tightening and Clearance Check
Check the clearance of all tubes to the body or any chassis parts, ensuring there is no contact. If all tubes are positioned correctly and the slip fits are fully pressed together, then tighten all Accu-Seal clamps to at least 60 ft-lbs. [See Figure 27]
Step 28: Reinstall Underbody Shields
Reinstall the OEM plastic underbody shield. [See Figure 28]
Step 29: Install Tri-Tip Section
Install your AWE tri-tip section (part C35) onto the rear section with the supplied Accu-Seal clamp. Looking from the rear of the car, level the tip outlets and tighten the clamp. [See Figure 29]
Step 30: Align Tip Clamp
To achieve the best tip fitment, align the 3.0" tip clamp to cover only the slot, as shown by Arrow A in Figure 30. The clamp should only cover the section of the tip that has been slotted, as shown by Arrow B in Figure 30. Torque the tip clamp to a minimum of 18 ft-lbs.
NOTES:
- It is recommended to apply anti-seize to the threads to prevent thread binding, shown by Arrow C in Figure 30.
- It is okay to have the clamp extend beyond the edge of the tip inlet.
[See Figure 30]
Step 31: Install AWE Tips
Install 3 AWE tips onto the tip outlet section with the t-bolt. Use anti-seize on tip clamp bolts. [See Figure 31]
Step 32: Reinstall Plastic Underbody Shield
Reinstall the OEM plastic underbody shield. [See Figure 32]
Step 33: Reinstall Metal Heat Shield
Reinstall the OEM metal heat shield onto the bottom of the vehicle. [See Figure 33]
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
---|---|
Exhaust is not fitting correctly | Most fitment issues are due to improperly adjusted exhaust, including tip fitments and rattling due to chassis contact. Refer to the AWE fitment guide for more installation tips. |
Wrong or missing parts | Double-check the parts list for your system and compare it with what you received. Fill out the AWE contact form to request missing parts. |
Care and Maintenance
Once installed properly, your AWE exhaust will provide years of trouble-free performance. The exhaust volume and sound will settle with usage; 800-1000 miles are required to break in new exhaust systems.
The rear 180Technology® resonator has a small drain hole to allow condensation to escape; water drops from this area are normal.
Periodic cleaning of exhaust tips is necessary to maintain their finish, especially in areas prone to road salt and caustic de-icing solutions. Use a mild soap and water solution or car wax to clean the finish. Avoid using abrasive polishes, as they can scratch the finish.
