Turn Off The Power
Before starting installation, always turn off the power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Verify the power is off using a voltage tester.
Installation Steps
1. Identify Circuit Type and Remove Your Old Switch
Determine if your existing setup is single-pole or 3-way. Remove the faceplate and unscrew the old switch from the electrical box. Carefully observe and note how the wires are connected to the old switch.
Diagram Description: Diagram illustrates identifying the Line and Load wires of an existing switch installation using a voltage tester. It shows a switch with wires connected and a voltage tester probe touching a wire to check for power. The text indicates to identify the Line wire (power source) and the Load wire (connected to the light).
2. Single-Pole Installation
For single-pole installations, the smart switch has two main terminals for the line and load wires, and a ground terminal.
Diagram Description: Diagram shows a single-pole installation. The black Line wire is connected to one black screw terminal. The black Load wire is connected to the other black screw terminal. The green Ground wire is connected to the green screw terminal.
3. Single-Pole Re-Installation
If your old switch had different wiring, follow these steps to connect the new switch correctly.
Diagram Description: Diagram illustrates a single-pole re-installation. It shows connecting the Line wire to one terminal, the Load wire to another terminal, and the Ground wire to the green terminal on the new switch.
4. 3-Way Line & Load in Different Outlet Box Installation
For 3-way control, where one switch controls the light from two locations and the line/load are in different boxes, connect the switches as follows:
Diagram Description: Diagram illustrates a 3-way wiring setup. The Line wire (black) connects to the common terminal (black screw) of the first switch. The Load wire (black) connects to the common terminal (black screw) of the second switch. Two traveler wires (red and black) connect between the traveler terminals (brass screws) of both switches. Ground wires (green) connect to the green screw terminals on both switches.
5. 3-Way Line & Load in Some Outlet Box Installation
For 3-way control, where the line and load are in the same electrical box, connect the switches as follows:
Diagram Description: Diagram illustrates a 3-way wiring setup where the line and load are in the same box. The Line wire (black) connects to the common terminal (black screw) of one switch. The Load wire (black) connects to the common terminal (black screw) of the other switch. Two traveler wires (red and black) connect between the traveler terminals (brass screws) of both switches. Ground wires (green) connect to the green screw terminals on both switches.
Congratulations!
Your GE Lighting Smart Switch is now installed. Restore power at the circuit breaker and test the switch.
