Installation Instructions
Note: AC refers to alternating current (wall outlet); DC refers to direct current (battery).
- Remove all packaging, including tube and protective wrappings.
- Install the included tube (B) into the lamp socket by aligning the base and pushing firmly until it snaps into place. Do not twist, turn, or bend the tube. Gently pull to confirm it is secure.
- Rotate the shade (A) to its closed position.
- Move the AC/DC switch (J) to the AC position.
- Refer to Operating Instructions for battery charging procedures before first use and after every use.
- Refer to Tube Insertion/Removal section for future tube replacement.
Operating Instructions
Note: This product is for indoor use only.
Note: Always fully charge the battery before first use and after every use to maximize battery life and performance.
Safety Notices:
- The lamp must be positioned upright while charging.
- Do not place the lamp on its side or tilt it while in use.
1. Charging the Battery:
Connect the AC Adapter (H) to a standard 120V AC outlet and the 9V DC connector (D). Rotate the shade (A) to its closed position. The battery charges faster when the lamp is off. The Charge Readiness light (L) will indicate charging status (RED when charging).
2. Using the Lamp with Wall Power:
Connect the AC Adapter (H) to a 120V AC outlet and the 9V DC connector (D). Move the AC/DC switch (J) to the AC position. Rotate the shade (A) to an open position at least 4 inches higher than the base. If the AC/DC switch is moved to the DC position, the lamp will turn off (this is normal).
3. Using the Lamp with Battery Power:
Ensure the battery is fully or nearly fully charged. Disconnect the AC Adapter (H) from the 9V DC connector (D). Move the AC/DC switch (J) to the DC position. Rotate the shade (A) to an open position at least 4 inches higher than the base. If the AC/DC switch is moved to the AC position, the lamp will turn off (this is normal).
4. Shade Tension Adjustment:
Use a coin in the tension slot (K) to tighten or loosen the shade tension. Adjust only enough to hold the shade in place; overtightening can damage the lamp.
Tube Insertion / Removal
- Disconnect the lamp from the wall power outlet.
- Move the AC/DC switch (J) to the AC position.
- If the lamp was recently used, allow it to cool for approximately 5 minutes before proceeding.
- Install the tube (B) as described in Installation Instructions, step 2.
Battery Maintenance Instructions
Battery Care:
Rechargeable Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries require proper care for maximum lifespan. Fully charge your SLA battery before first use. Avoid storing the battery for more than 4-6 weeks without charging, as SLA batteries self-discharge approximately 1% per day.
Battery Capacity:
The included 5Ah SLA battery provides an initial 3+ hours of use. Battery life decreases with age. A battery that no longer provides at least 1 hour of continuous light after a full charge should be replaced. Replacement batteries are available from OttLite and other sources. Batteries with less than 5Ah capacity will offer shorter run times.
SLA batteries offer long use time and economy but require extended charging periods (12-16 hours for a full charge). Short use and charge cycles may not significantly harm the battery for a few uses, but always aim for a full charge when possible.
Charge Readiness Light (L):
The indicator light (L) shows AC power connection. A RED light indicates the battery is charging. For optimal capacity, charge for 12-16 hours after use.
Battery Cautions
CAUTION - HIGH ENERGY STORAGE:
- Do not allow battery terminals to be shorted by conductive materials.
- Always install the battery door during use and charging.
- Do not expose the battery to water.
- The battery contains strong electrolyte. Handle with care.
- Do not apply excessive force, drop, or strike the battery.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery.
- If electrolyte contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with water.
- If electrolyte contacts eyes, flush with clean water and seek immediate medical attention.
- Observe correct polarity when inserting the battery to prevent leakage or explosion.
- Do not expose the battery to heat or flame.
To ensure long battery life, always fully charge the battery after periods of non-use. Maximum battery life is achieved by recharging before complete discharge and before prolonged storage.
Battery Replacement
CAUTION - HIGH ENERGY STORAGE:
Customer Advisory: If you have concerns or questions regarding battery installation, seek qualified assistance to prevent damage or injury.
- Remove the battery door by loosening retention screws (G). Pull the top of the door away from the lamp.
- Gently remove the battery (E), ensuring leads (F) do not snag.
- Remove each lead by grasping the insulated end and pulling it away from the terminal with a slight side-to-side motion.
- Attach new leads to the new battery: grasp the insulated end, align the lead to the terminal, and push firmly onto the terminal. Connect RED lead to positive (+) and BLACK lead to negative (-).
- Replace the battery in the lamp, ensuring wires are not pinched. Slide the battery fully into place.
- Replace the battery door and secure with retention screws (G).
