Ground Source Heat Pump System Configurations
Geothermal systems can be installed using various loop configurations:
- Horizontal loop: Pipes are laid horizontally in trenches, typically requiring about half an acre of available space.
- Vertical loop: Pipes are inserted vertically into the ground, suitable for limited space or where soil conditions are not ideal for horizontal loops.
- Pond loop: Coiled, closed loops are placed at the bottom of an adequately sized body of water.
- Open loop: This configuration is best for homes with an abundant supply of quality well water. Water is drawn into the geothermal system, used for heating/cooling, and then discharged into an adjacent drainage ditch or pond.

Solar energy warms the ground, and approximately 47% of this heat is stored beneath the surface. Just a few feet below the frost line, temperatures remain consistently between 55°F (13°C) and 70°F (21°C) in many climates year-round, creating a reliable source for sustainable comfort.
