CLIKR-5 Universal Remote Control Operating Instructions
This document provides operating instructions for the CLIKR-5 universal remote control, models UR5U-8780L and UR5U-8790L. It is designed to operate digital set-top boxes from CISCO/SA, Pioneer, Pace Micro, Samsung, and Motorola, as well as most TV, VCR, DVD, and AUX equipment.
1. Introduction
The CLIKR-5 remote is designed for ease of use and comprehensive control of your home entertainment system. It supports various device types including Cable Set-Top Boxes (CBL), Televisions (TV), VCRs, DVD Players (DVD), and Audio/Media Equipment (AUX).
2. Replacing Batteries
To replace the batteries:
- Remove the battery compartment cover from the back of the remote.
- Carefully check battery polarity and install two new AA alkaline batteries as indicated.
- Replace the battery compartment cover.
3. Operations
Default State:
- Device Default: Cable Set-Top Box (STB)
- Channel Default: Operates through the CABLE STB. Channel and number controls can be programmed to work through the TV or VCR. Refer to Section H.
- Volume Default: Volume and Mute controls automatically transfer to the selected device. Default assignments are: CBL:TV; TV:TV; VCR:TV; DVD:TV; AUX:AUX. Volume and Mute can be programmed to control CBL through TV, VCR, or AUX. Refer to Section G.
4. Button Functions
The remote features various buttons for controlling your devices, including:
- Memory Buttons: Pre-programmed by the Cable MSO for quick access to popular channels.
- Transport Keys: Standard playback controls (Play, Pause, Stop, etc.).
5. Programming the Remote Control
There are three primary methods for programming the remote:
- Quick Setup Method: Uses a single-digit code for fast setup of popular brands.
- 3-Digit Code Method: Uses specific 3-digit codes corresponding to the equipment manufacturer.
- Auto Search Method: Scans through all codes to find the correct one if other methods fail.
Important Setup Note: During programming, the device LED will remain lit for 30 seconds. If no button is pressed within this time, the setup mode will exit, and you will need to restart the process.
A. Quick Setup Method
- Turn on the TV.
- Press and hold the [TV] button and either the [A] (Yellow) or [B] (Blue) button for 3 seconds. The TV button LED will illuminate.
- Point the remote at the TV and press the number button assigned to your TV brand (e.g., '5' for Sharp). The TV should turn off. If not, repeatedly press the same number button until it turns off.
- Press the [TV] button again to save the code. The remote is now ready to control your TV.
*Note: If the correct code is not found, use the 3-Digit Code Method or Auto Search Method.
B. 3-Digit Code Method
- Turn on the equipment (Cable Box, TV, VCR, etc.).
- Press the [DEVICE] button and the [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The corresponding device LED will turn on.
- Point the remote at the equipment and enter the 3-digit code for your brand from the code tables. If multiple codes exist, try them one by one until the equipment turns off.
- Press the same [DEVICE] button again to store the code. The device LED will blink twice to confirm.
*Note: You can verify the correct code by pressing the [POWER] button. The equipment should turn back on. Test all functions to ensure proper operation.
C. Auto Search Method
- Turn on the equipment.
- Press the [DEVICE] button and the [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The device LED will turn on.
- Press the [CH5] or [CH6] button repeatedly (or hold it down). The remote will send Power ON/OFF signals. Release the button when the equipment turns off.
- Press the same [DEVICE] button to store the code. The device LED will blink twice to confirm.
*Note: Verify the code by pressing [POWER] to turn the equipment back on and test all functions.
D. To Identify the 3-Digit Code Programmed for a Device
- Press the appropriate [DEVICE] button and the [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The device LED will turn on.
- Press the [INFO] button. The device LED will blink to indicate the digits of the code (e.g., 1 blink, pause, 3 blinks, pause, 8 blinks = 138). Ten blinks indicate '0'.
E. Programming the AUX Device
The AUX function can be used for devices like media PCs, gaming consoles, or satellite radio receivers. Follow the instructions in section B to program an AUX device. To program a second TV, VCR, or DVD player:
- Turn on the 5th device.
- Press the [AUX] button and the [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The [AUX] device LED will turn on.
- Press the [Device] button for the type of device you want to set up (e.g., [TV] for a second TV). Enter the 3-digit code.
- Verify the code by pressing [POWER]. If functions are not correct, try the next code.
- Save the code by pressing the [AUX] button again. The [AUX] LED will blink twice.
F. Programming the System On/Off Button
This allows the [SYSTEM ON/OFF] button to control multiple devices:
- Press the [CBL] button.
- Press the [SYSTEM ON/OFF] button and the [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The [CBL] button LED will turn on.
- Press the [DEVICE] button for each component you want to control, followed by the [POWER] button.
- Press the [CH5] button to save the commands. The [CBL] button LED will blink twice.
G. Programming Volume Control
Volume and Mute controls are factory set to transfer to the selected device. To store CBL volume control in CBL mode:
- Press the [OK/SEL] button and [CBL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The device LED will turn on.
- Press the [VOL5] button. The device LED will blink.
- Press the [CBL] button. The device LED will blink twice to confirm.
*Note: To revert CBL device to TV volume control, repeat steps, replacing [CBL] with [TV] in Step 3.
H. Programming Channel Control
Channel controls (Channel Up/Down, Last, Numbers) can be programmed to operate in different device modes. Default settings are: CBL:CBL; TV:CBL; VCR:CBL; DVD:DVD; AUX:AUX. To store TV channel controls in TV mode:
- Press the [OK/SEL] button and [TV] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The device LED will turn on.
- Press the [VOL6] button. The device LED will blink.
- Press the [TV] button. The device LED will blink twice to confirm.
I. Programming a ‘Macro’ Button
Macro buttons can be programmed to access up to five 2-digit, four 3-digit, or three 4-digit channels with a single button press:
- Press the [CBL] button to select CBL mode.
- Press the [MACRO] button and [OK/SEL] button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The [CBL] button LED will turn on.
- Enter the 2, 3, or 4-digit channel codes, pressing [STOP] after each. The [CBL] LED will blink once per channel entered.
- Press the [CH5] button to store the channels. The [CBL] LED will blink twice.
To access programmed channels, press the [MACRO] button repeatedly.
J. Low Battery Warning
When batteries are low, the Device LED lights will blink twice in sequence whenever the [POWER] button is pressed to turn on equipment.
K. Memory Lock System
The remote control retains programmed memory for 10 years, even after battery removal.
L. Record Your Component Set-up Codes
Keep a record of your setup codes:
- TV Set-up Code Number: ______
- VCR Set-up Code Number: ______
- DVD Set-up Code Number: ______
- AUX Set-up Code Number: ______

6. Set-up Code Tables
Extensive code tables for various brands and device types (TV, VCR, DVD, AUX) are provided to assist in the programming process. These tables list manufacturer names and their corresponding setup code numbers.
