iRobot Roomba 4160 Dust Filter Replacement
Written By: Philippe Napaa
Introduction
The dust filter is used to help separate dirt and debris from the air intake in the Roomba. It is a fine gray semicircular mesh screen surrounded by a black plastic frame, which is mounted in another yellow frame. This assembly slides into the dust bin, which is on the back of the Roomba, opposite of the bumper. Over time, the filter may get clogged, inhibiting suction and cleaning performance. Also, the Roomba may overheat, due to the limited airflow through the Roomba. This guide will show you how to find and replace the dust filter on a Roomba 4160.
Step 1: Prepare the Roomba
Safety First: ⚠️ Make sure the Roomba is turned off, or electric shock can occur.
Place the Roomba on a flat surface with the top side facing you.
Ensure the three buttons on the control panel and the word "iRobot" are facing you.
Locate the gumdrop shaped push button on the top of the Roomba, directly below the word "iRobot."

Step 2: Remove the Dust Bin
To open the dust bin, grasp the bumper of the Roomba with one hand. Use your other hand and thumb to hold the dust bin and press the gumdrop shaped button.
While pressing the button, pull the dust bin away from the Roomba until it is free of the Roomba body.

Step 3: Access the Filter
With the dust bin removed, the inside of the dust bin should be visible. A green circuit board should be visible in the back of the dust bin.
Caution: ⚠️ Avoid spreading the loose dust around or breathing it, to avoid getting sick.
Locate the yellow plastic filter frame at the front of the dust bin. This is a yellow plastic rectangle with black text and arrows in it, directly above a blue rubber flap.

Step 4: Remove the Filter Frame
To remove the filter frame, grasp the yellow plastic rectangle between your thumb and index finger while holding the opposite side of the dust bin with the other hand.
Pull the yellow plastic frame away from the dust bin.
The dust filter should now be visible in the center of the yellow plastic frame.
