Petzl GRILLON Adjustable Lanyard
This technical notice provides instructions for the correct use of the Petzl GRILLON adjustable lanyard. It covers various applications, nomenclature, inspection procedures, compatibility, working principles, usage guidelines, safety precautions, spare parts, and additional information.
1. Field of Application
Personal protective equipment (PPE) for fall protection. Compliant with Regulation (EU) 2016/425. Applications include:
- Adjustable lanyard for work positioning
- Descender
- Temporary anchor
- Horizontal lifeline
Available models include GRILLON, GRILLON PLUS (high abrasion resistance), GRILLON HOOK (European and International versions), and GRILLON MGO. Designed for single-person use only. It helps prevent falls when used for work positioning and as a descender, and protects against falls from height when used as a temporary anchor. It must not be used for hoisting or pushed beyond its limits.
⚠️ WARNING: Activities involving this equipment are inherently dangerous. Users are responsible for their own actions, decisions, and safety. Read and understand all instructions, get specific training, become acquainted with capabilities and limitations, and accept the risks involved. Failure to heed these warnings may result in severe injury or death.

3. Inspection, Points to Verify
User safety depends on equipment integrity. Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least every 12 months. More frequent inspections may be necessary based on usage intensity. Follow procedures at Petzl.com and record results.
Before each use: Check the rope adjuster for deformation, cracks, wear, corrosion. Verify handle movement and spring function. Ensure the cam moves freely. Inspect the rope and stitching for cuts, loose threads, wear, or damage. Check for foreign objects in the mechanism.
During use: Regularly monitor the product's condition and connections. Ensure correct positioning of all equipment. Beware of pressure on the cam that can cause unlocking. Verify connectors are properly closed and locked each time they are used.
Note: The GRILLON PLUS rope with aramid sheath is highly abrasion-resistant but not heat-resistant; observe specified operating temperatures.
4. Compatibility
Verify compatibility with other system elements. Dangerous situations can arise if safety functions are affected by other equipment. Equipment used with GRILLON must meet national standards (e.g., EN 362 carabiners). Use the plastic sheath for better connector positioning. For frequent connections, use a locking carabiner with a positioning system (e.g., CAPTIV bar or MICRO SWIVEL). For semi-permanent connections, use a tool-locking connector. WARNING: Connectors used without positioning systems can rotate and block the cam.
5. Working Principle
Tensioning/Shortening: Pull the free rope.
Blocking: Ensure the cam pivots freely to block the rope.
Lengthening (Double Mode): If the rope is lightly loaded, push the cam to feed slack.
Lengthening (Single Mode) / Releasing under Load: Use the handle to loosen the taut rope. Control release rate by holding the brake-side of the rope.
⚠️ WARNING: Fall risk if cam or handle are manipulated without holding the free rope.
Braking and speed control are achieved by varying grip on the free rope.
6. Adjustable Lanyard for Work Positioning
Standards: EN 358:2018, ANSI Z359.3, CSA Z259.11-17.
Working Load: 140 kg.
Keep lanyard taut and stay below the anchor. Ensure the system supports user weight. This lanyard is not for fall arrest and may require a supplementary fall arrest system. Avoid using a waistbelt if there's a risk of unintentional suspension or uncontrolled tension. Be cautious near moving machinery or electrical hazards.
6a. Double Mode Use: Pass lanyard around a suitable anchor. Attach termination to harness, preferably to the side attachment point opposite the rope adjuster. Pay attention to HOOK orientation to prevent unhooking.
6b. Single Mode Use: Attach lanyard termination to an anchor.
7. Descender
Standard: EN 12841:2006 type C.
Working Load: 100 kg.
Use for progression on the work rope with a type A backup device on a safety rope. Use only with Petzl GRILLON or GRILLON PLUS ropes. Keep the rope between GRILLON and anchor as tight and vertical as possible to reduce fall/pendulum risk. Ensure the safety rope is not loaded when body weight is on the work rope. Dynamic overload can damage the safety rope. Not suitable for fall arrest systems.
8. Temporary Anchor for Wrapping Around a Structure
Standard: EN 795:2012 type B.
Wrap lanyard around a suitable anchor (sufficient strength, diameter, no sharp/abrasive edges). Anchor strength must not exceed structure strength. Secure anchor with a mule knot tied off with an overhand knot on the free rope near the adjuster. Adjust rope length to prevent uncontrolled movement. Maximum anchor strength/load to structure: 18 kN.
9. Horizontal Lifeline
Standard: EN 795:2012 type C.
Initial Tension: Approximately 1 kN, achieved by two persons pulling or a 3:1 haul system. Warning: excessive tension may reduce clearance but increases load on anchors.
Maximum Strength: 18 kN.
Attachment: For single-person use only. Attach with an EN 354 or EN 358 lanyard, or lanyard with EN 355 energy absorber. Follow lanyard instructions regarding position and fall height. Lifeline cannot be used with a retractable fall arrester.
Information on Sag and Clearance: Provide adequate clearance below the user to prevent hitting ground/obstacles in a fall. Verify sag does not cause contact with edges that could damage the rope. Clearance includes sag (a), max lanyard length after fall (b), average user height (c), and 1m safety margin (d). Warning: required clearance can increase significantly when used with a fall arrest system not tested in combination.
10. Spare Parts
Replace worn rope only with Petzl GRILLON ropes. Installation involves removing the side plate locking screw, opening the adjuster, inserting the rope in the correct direction, closing the adjuster, and replacing the screw before use.
11. Additional Information
- When used in a fall arrest system, user must limit impact force to max 6 kN.
- Max load transmitted to structure by anchor: approx. 18 kN.
- Have a rescue plan and means to implement it rapidly.
- Anchor point should preferably be above user and meet EN 795 or ANSI Z359.2.
- In fall arrest systems, check required clearance below user before each use.
- Ensure anchor point is correctly positioned to reduce pendulum risk and fall distance.
- A fall arrest harness is the only allowable device for body support in a fall arrest system.
- Be aware of dangerous situations when using multiple items of equipment.
- ⚠️ DANGER: Ensure products do not rub against abrasive materials or sharp edges.
- Users must be medically fit for activities at height. Inert suspension in a harness can result in serious injury or death.
- Follow Instructions for Use for all associated equipment.
- Instructions must be provided in the language of the country of use.
- Ensure product markings are present and legible.
When to retire equipment: An exceptional event may require retiring a product after a single use. Retire a product if:
- Over 10 years old (plastic/textile).
- Subjected to a major fall or load.
- Fails inspection or reliability is doubted.
- Full usage history is unknown.
- Becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards, or incompatibility.
Destroy retired products to prevent further use.
