Before each use
Harness
Check the condition of the webbing at the attachment points, adjustment buckles, and stitching. Pay particular attention to any signs of fraying or loosening. Check for cuts, wear, and damage from use, heat, or chemical exposure. Ensure that the DOUBLEBACK, DOUBLEBACK PLUS, and FAST buckles function correctly. Check the fall indicator. If the dorsal attachment point has been subjected to an impact exceeding 400 daN, the indicator will show red. Discard the harness if the fall indicator is visible.
Gated ventral attachment point
Check for cracks, deformation, or corrosion. Ensure that the screws are present. Ensure that the screws are properly tightened (correctly installed, no play).
CROLL L
Check the product for cracks, deformation, marks, wear, or corrosion. Check the condition of the frame, connection holes, cam, and safety catch, springs, and cam axle. Check the cam's mobility and the efficiency of its spring. Check that the cam teeth are not clogged with dirt.
During use
Regularly check that the adjustment buckles are properly tightened. It is important to regularly check the condition of the product and its connections with other equipment in the system. Ensure that all equipment components are correctly positioned relative to each other. Warning: Beware of foreign objects that may impede the operation of the cam. Beware of objects that may snag the safety catch and cause the cam to open.
4. Compatibility
Verify that this product is compatible with other components in the system (compatibility = good functional interaction). Equipment used with the harness must comply with current standards in your country (e.g., EN 362 for connectors).
5. Putting on the harness
Ensure that excess webbing is correctly stored (folded) in the elastic keepers. Be aware of foreign objects that may impede the operation of the FAST buckles (e.g., grit, sand, clothing). Ensure they are properly locked (see diagrams). Gated ventral attachment point This point allows for the connection of multiple pieces of equipment: a PODIUM seat on the main axis, a CROLL L rope clamp on the small D, and a descender on the large D. Both screws must be present. To ensure the proper performance of your equipment, screws must be correctly installed and tightened to the specified torque. Only by using a torque wrench can you ensure that the correct tightening torque is achieved. Follow the installation and removal instructions precisely (see diagrams). It is not necessary to completely remove the screw to release the pin. If you lose a screw, contact Petzl customer service.
Initial adjustment of the dorsal attachment point
Adjust the dorsal attachment point to fit your body shape and size: position it level with your shoulder blades. Warning: When using the dorsal attachment point, it is important to also adjust the rear straps connecting the leg loops to the waist belt.
Adjustment and suspension test
The harness must be adjusted to fit snugly against the body to reduce the risk of injury in case of a fall. In a safe environment, move around and hang from the harness at each attachment point with your equipment to ensure it fits correctly, provides adequate comfort for the intended use, and is properly adjusted.
6. EN 361:2002 Fall Arrest Harness
Full body fall arrest harness, forming part of a fall arrest system according to EN 363 standard (personal fall arrest system).
6A. Sternal attachment point
6B. Dorsal attachment point
Only these points should be used to connect to a fall arrest system, such as a mobile fall arrest device on a rope, an energy absorber, or other systems compliant with EN 363. For ease of identification, these points are marked with the letter 'A'.
Clearance: free space below the user
The free space below the user must be sufficient to prevent them from hitting any obstacles during a fall. Detailed instructions for calculating clearance are provided in the user manuals for other components (energy absorbers, mobile fall arrest devices, etc.).
7. EN 358:2018 Work Positioning and Restraint Belt
These attachment points must only be used for connection to a work positioning or restraint system. For correct usage, refer to the instructions for the lanyard used. These attachment points are not designed for fall arrest. Do not use a work positioning belt if there is a risk of the user being suspended or subjected to uncontrolled tension from the belt. For work positioning, use an anchor point located at or above waist level. It may be necessary to supplement work positioning or restraint systems with collective or personal fall arrest systems.
7A. Gated ventral attachment point
7B. Lateral attachment points on the waist belt
Always use the two lateral attachment points together by connecting them with a positioning lanyard to ensure comfortable support from the waist belt.
7C. Rear restraint attachment point
This rear restraint attachment point is intended solely for connecting a restraint system that prevents the user from reaching areas where a fall may occur.
8. EN 813:2008 Sit Harness
Gated ventral attachment point
Designed for progression on rope and for work positioning. Use the ventral attachment point to connect a descender, work positioning lanyards, or progression lanyards. This attachment point is not suitable for fall arrest.
9. CROLL L Ventral Rope Clamp EN 12841:2006
CROLL L is a type B rope adjustment device used for ascending on a work rope. CROLL L must always be used in conjunction with a type A backup device installed on a safety rope (e.g., a mobile fall arrest device for ropes, ASAP).
CROLL L is not suitable for use in a fall arrest system. To comply with EN 12841:2006 type B requirements, use a 10-13 mm semi-static rope compliant with EN 1891 type A (Note: Certification tests used Petzl CLUB 10mm and Teufelberger KM3 13mm ropes). The total length of the connected components (lanyard + connectors + device) must not exceed 1 meter. To reduce the risk of falling, ensure that the rope is always taut between the rope adjustment device and the anchor points.
When the work rope is under tension, ensure that the safety rope is not under tension.
Dynamic overload can damage the safety rope.
Function principle and test
This rope clamp is a device for ascending on a rope. It slides along the rope in one direction and locks in the other. The cam's teeth grip the rope, pinching it between the cam and the frame to lock it. The cam has slots to expel dirt.
Installing and removing the rope
Pull down the safety catch and hook it to the device's frame. The cam remains open. Insert the rope into the device. Note the up/down orientation markers. Release the safety catch to allow the cam to grip the rope. In this position, the safety catch prevents the cam from opening accidentally. To move the device up the rope, slide it up while simultaneously pulling the cam with your finger. Do not press the safety catch, as this may cause the cam to open accidentally.
Rope ascent
Use CROLL L with another ascender, such as BASIC and a foot loop. Always connect yourself to the second ascender with an appropriate lanyard.
Angled traverse situation
On an angled rope traverse: place your leg over the rope, aligning the rope with the CROLL L's rope channel.
Short rope descent
Gently slide the device up the rope while simultaneously pressing the cam with your finger. Do not press the safety catch, as this may cause the cam to open accidentally. Warning: For users weighing over 100 kg, consult the information on Solutions for users weighing over 100 kg on Petzl.com.
10. Equipment loops
Equipment loops are intended solely for carrying equipment. Danger Warning: Never use equipment loops for securing, lowering, connecting, or anchoring a person. The Velcro keeper can be used to secure the connector of your mobile fall arrest device in a high position.
11. Fall arrest lanyard connector holder
A. The connector holder is intended solely for storing unused lanyard connectors. B. In the event of a fall, the lanyard connector holder releases the connector at the end of the lanyard to prevent it from interfering with the energy absorber's operation. Warning: This is not a fall arrest attachment point.
12. Accessories
PODIUM seat and shackles for PODIUM seat.
13. Additional information
This product complies with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment. The EU Declaration of Conformity is available on Petzl.com. You must have a rescue plan and the means to implement it quickly in case of difficulties during use. The system's anchor point should ideally be positioned above the user and must meet EN 795 standard requirements (minimum strength 12 kN). In a fall arrest system, it is essential to ensure sufficient clearance below the user before use, to prevent impact with the ground or obstacles during a fall. Ensure the anchor point is correctly positioned to reduce the risk and distance of any fall. The fall arrest harness is the only body support device that can be used in a fall arrest system. When using multiple devices together, the safety function of one device may be affected by the operation of another, creating a dangerous situation. Warning: Ensure the product does not rub against abrasive or sharp surfaces. Users must be medically fit for working at height. Warning: Being suspended and immobilized in a harness can cause serious physiological disorders or death.
