Petzl JOKO CUSTOM / JOKO ADJUST CUSTOM Lanyards: Technical Notice and Instructions for Use
This document provides essential information for the safe and correct use of Petzl JOKO CUSTOM and JOKO ADJUST CUSTOM lanyards.
1. Field of Application
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for fall protection from height.
Lanyards for adventure parks.
- JOKO CUSTOM: fixed-length single or double lanyard.
- JOKO ADJUST CUSTOM: adjustable-length single or double lanyard.
Used for progression along a horizontal lifeline and for connection to a zip line trolley in adventure parks.
Important Note: Selection, assembly, and installation of system components (lanyards, connectors, mobile connection devices, harnesses) must be done by competent persons suitable for the specific adventure park.
Limitations: Not an energy absorber for via ferrata (EN 958) or a lanyard for work at height (EN 354). Not designed to reduce impact force as defined in EN 15567-1. Must not be pushed beyond limits or used for unintended purposes.
2. Nomenclature
The lanyard can be configured with three termination options and three harness attachment options.
Lanyard Rope Types:
- (1) I-lanyard rope
- (2) Y-lanyard rope
Lanyard Terminations:
- (3) Connector attachment termination
- (4) Girth-hitch attachment loop
- (5) ADJUST adjuster at the end of the lanyard
Attachments to the Harness:
- (6) Sewn termination for attachment to the harness with a connector
- (7) Loop for attachment to the harness with a girth hitch
- (8) ADJUST adjuster on the harness end
Connector Accessories:
- (9) CAPTIVO
- (10) CAPTIV ADJUST
- (11) CAPTIV
Principal Materials: nylon, polyester, aluminum.
3. Choice of Lanyard Length
Selection must be based on course characteristics and user height to allow the lanyard to be as taut as possible, minimizing slack and fall potential. The length must prevent the user from hitting obstacles. JOKO ADJUST CUSTOM lanyards must not pose a risk even at maximum adjustment.
4. Inspection, Points to Verify
Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least every 12 months.
Before Each Use:
- Check the rope and safety stitching for cuts, wear, damage (use, heat, chemicals). Pay attention to cut or loose threads.
- On the ADJUST adjuster, check for absence of deformation, cracks, marks, wear, corrosion.
During Use:
- Regularly monitor the product's condition and its connections.
- Ensure correct positioning of equipment.
- Beware of pressure or rubbing on the ADJUST adjuster that could cause unblocking. Use CAPTIVO or CAPTIV ADJUST to optimize positioning.
Periodic Inspection (at least every 12 months): Record results on PPE inspection form (type, model, manufacturer, serial number, dates, problems, inspector's name/signature).
5. Compatibility
Verify compatibility with other system elements. Equipment must meet current standards (e.g., EN 17109 pulleys).
Lanyard Terminations:
- ADJUST adjuster (end): Compatible with VERTIGO, Am'D connectors and TRAC, TRAC PLUS, TRAC GUIDE, TRAC GUIDE LT trolleys.
- Connector attachment termination: Compatible with VERTIGO, Am'D connectors and TRAC, TRAC PLUS, TRAC GUIDE, TRAC CLUB trolleys.
- Girth-hitch attachment loop: Must be used with a compatible trolley (refer to trolley's instructions).
- For other connectors, perform a compatibility test (correct installation, function, check for poor positioning).
Attachments to the Harness:
- ADJUST adjuster (harness end): Compatible with RING OPEN and Am'D PIN-LOCK (with CAPTIV ADJUST).
- Sewn termination with connector: Compatible with RING OPEN, SWIVEL OPEN and Am'D PIN-LOCK (with CAPTIV).
- For other connectors, perform a compatibility test.
6. Installing a Mobile Connection Device
Refer to diagrams and instructions for attached components. Warning: girth-hitch attachment loop must only be used for making a girth hitch.
7. Installation on the Harness
Connect lanyard(s) to harness attachment point per harness instructions. Refer to diagrams and instructions for attached components. Warning: girth-hitch harness attachment loop must only be used for making a girth hitch.
Connecting a Second System: If a second system is needed (another lanyard, fall arrest device), attach it to the harness attachment point, never to the first lanyard or its connector. Clearly identify attachment area on harness if necessary.
8. Adjusting to User Height (JOKO ADJUST CUSTOM)
Optimize lanyard length relative to user height: 40 cm maximum adjustment. Adjustment must be done before attaching to course protection. Operator must ensure length is properly adjusted throughout the course.
9. Attachment to the Lifeline
Attachment to course protection must be done by or under operator supervision. Recommended to be connected by two independent systems, unless course is designed for one lanyard.
10. Precautions
- User must always remain below the anchor with lanyards taut to limit fall risk.
- For blocking, the ADJUST adjuster must pivot freely on the connector.
- A knot in the rope reduces its strength.
- Wet or icy rope is weaker and less abrasion-resistant.
- Direct force between lanyard ends can damage stitching and endanger the user.
- Double lanyards can present a risk of strangulation or larynx injury.
11. Clearance: Amount of Free Space Below the User
Free space below the user must be sufficient to prevent hitting obstacles when suspended. Calculation must account for lanyard length (incl. connectors), average user height, and a 1m safety margin.
12. Additional Information
Product meets Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on PPE. EU declaration of conformity available at Petzl.com.
- Have a rescue plan and means to implement it rapidly.
- Ensure anchor point is correctly positioned to limit fall risk and length.
- WARNING: Ensure products do not rub against abrasive or sharp surfaces.
- Users must be medically fit for activities at height.
- WARNING: Inert suspension in a harness can result in serious injury or death (suspension trauma).
- Follow instructions for all equipment used with this product.
- Instructions must be provided to the user in the language of the country of use.
- Ensure product markings are legible.
When to Retire Your Equipment:
- An exceptional event can lead to retirement after one use (depending on usage type, intensity, environment).
- Retire if:
- Over 10 years old (plastic/textile).
- Subjected to a major fall or load.
- Fails inspection or if you doubt its reliability.
- Full usage history is unknown.
- Becomes obsolete (legislation, standards, technique, incompatibility).
- Destroy retired products to prevent further use.
