Critical Installation Requirements
Please verify that your installation meets all of these CRITICAL requirements:
Requirement A: Fireplace Type and Temperature
MantelMount is designed for use only with decorative fireplaces that are not the primary heat source for a house. Temperature at the front edge of the mantle should never exceed 110°F.
Diagram illustrates a mantle with a thermometer showing a maximum of 110°F.
Requirement B: Wall Structure
Wall must be WOOD STUD FRAME only. There must be at least 2 studs available for mounting. Wall covering must not exceed 5/8 inches thick.
Diagram illustrates a wall with two studs marked.
Requirement C: Mantle Extension
Mantle must not extend from mounting surface more than 14 inches.
Diagram illustrates a mantle extension measurement, showing a maximum of 14 inches.
Requirement D: TV Specifications
TV weight must be between 40 - 115 pounds and have a screen size larger than 47 diagonal inches. Consult TV Owner's Manual for verification.
Diagram shows a hand holding a TV owner's manual with weight and size information.
Requirement E: Vertical Space Above Mantle
The space above the mantle must be taller than the TV. The required space depends on how far out the mantle extends. Refer to the chart below and add this additional height to TV height to determine if space is tall enough.
Diagram shows a side view illustrating 'Space height' and 'TV height' relative to the mantle.
If mantle extends: This is required space height: Less than 8 inches TV height plus 2 inches 8 - 10 inches TV height plus 4 inches 10 - 12 inches TV height plus 5 inches 12 - 14 inches TV height plus 7 inches
Installation Steps
Step 1: Determine TV Back Type
Use Vertical Brace {31} to determine if the television is a flat back or an irregular back. An irregular back will require spacers and longer screws to fill the space between the Vertical Brace and the TV. Diagrams show 'Flat Back' and 'Irregular Back' configurations, illustrating the need for spacers.
Step 2: Select Correct TV Screws
Choose the correct screw diameter and length for the TV. Hand-thread screw combination into the TV to ensure there is adequate thread engagement without hitting the bottom of the threaded insert. Use only the minimum amount of spacers (if required). A diagram shows 7-10 threads minimum engagement is required in the TV insert, leaving a gap.
⚠️ CAUTION: Do not use screws that are too long for the threaded inserts of the Television. This can damage internal components.
Step 3: Possible Screw Combinations
Diagrams show various possible screw and spacer combinations for attaching the TV brace to the TV, with notes that the spacer sleeve always faces the screw.
Step 4: Mount Vertical Braces
Mount Vertical Braces {31} making sure the bottom of the Brace is LESS THAN ONE INCH ABOVE the bottom of the television. A diagram illustrates this placement.
Step 5: Determine Vertical Position of Wall Plate
Determine the vertical position of the wall plate. The further out a mantle extends, the more it can interfere with the TV's arc. MantelMount must be installed a minimum distance above the mantle, based on Requirement E. A chart is provided for required installation height based on mantle extension:
- Less than 8 inches mantle extension: 2 inches above mantle
- 8 - 10 inches mantle extension: 4 inches above mantle
- 10 - 12 inches mantle extension: 5 inches above mantle
- 12 - 14 inches mantle extension: 7 inches above mantle
Note: If wall space above the mantle is limited, use exact dimensions. If ample space exists, these are minimum requirements.
Step 6: Determine Horizontal Position of Wall Plate
Determine the horizontal position of the wall plate to compensate for an unbalanced TV 'Center of Gravity'. If the TV leans, temporarily mount the Horizontal Bar {34} and lift the TV to find the balance point. This distance will be used to offset the Wall Plate {32}. If unable to determine, installation can proceed, and adjustments can be made later. Remove the Horizontal Bar {34} and screws {15} after this step.
Diagrams illustrate checking TV balance and offsetting the wall plate.
Step 7: Mark Mantle Centerline
Measure the centerline of the mantle and mark it with tape on the wall.
Step 8: Locate Studs
Locate at least two studs with a stud finder. Use a sharp awl or finish nail to find the center of each stud. Lag bolts must be installed into the CENTER of the studs. A diagram shows a cutout for reference.
Step 9: Align and Mark Wall Plate
Align the arrows on the Wall Plate {32} pointing upward. Center and level the plate above the mantle, positioning the height using the table from STEP 5. Mark the 4 spots for lag bolts directly on the center of the studs.
Diagram shows the wall plate being positioned and marked, with a note for 'Minimum Height from STEP 5'.
Step 10: Pre-drill Holes
Pre-drill the 4 holes with an 11/64" drill bit to a depth of 2.5 inches (65mm), including wall covering. Note: Wall covering (drywall) must not exceed 5/8" thickness.
Diagram shows a drill bit and wall.
Step 11: Install Lag Bolts
Adjust Wall Plate {32} horizontally, using results from STEP 6, to compensate for an unbalanced TV center-of-gravity, up to a maximum of 2 inches left or right. Move the Wall Plate in the SAME DIRECTION as the offset from STEP 6. Loosely install Lag Bolts {17} and Washers {18}. Diagrams show the 2-inch maximum adjustment range.
Step 12: Caution on Lag Bolts
⚠️ CAUTION: Do not overtighten Lag Bolts {17}. Tighten only until the washers are firmly against the wall plate. Damage due to overtightening can cause property damage or injury.
Step 13: Install Lifting Mechanism
Insert the top tab of the Lifting Mechanism {35} into the slot of the Wall Plate {32}, then slide the bottom into position. A diagram illustrates this insertion.
DO NOT damage or scratch the rods of the Gas Springs!
Step 14: Secure Lifting Mechanism
Align all four holes and install Screws {14}. Tighten with the supplied Wrench {23}.
Step 15: Trace Routing Box Location
Trace the Routing Box {27} (without the tabs) for both desired locations onto the wall along the edge of a stud. Boxes must be mounted to studs.
Step 16: Cut Openings for Conduit
Cut out both openings through the wall covering (drywall) along the studs using a Keyhole Saw.
Diagram shows cutting openings in drywall along studs.
Step 17: Attach Conduit to Box
Attach the CUT end of the conduit to the box and install to the stud using Screws {19}. If the box is within the MantelMount Wall Frame {32}, use inner tabs to protrude to the Wall Cover {29}. If outside the frame, break off inner tabs and mount flush using outer tabs. Diagrams show inner and outer tabs.
Step 18: Feed Conduit
Feed the conduit through the other opening and cut the other end of conduit to length using a hacksaw.
Step 19: Install Second Box and Cover Plate
Install the second box to the stud using Screws {19}, and install a cover plate if available.
Step 20: Feed Signal Cables
Signal Cables can usually be fed through the conduit by pushing them from the higher opening to the lower opening. A diagram shows cables being fed through conduit.
Reference Only: Cables must be long enough for extension and swivel, and to attach to the TV Brace {33} using Cable Ties {24}. DO NOT attach cables to the central Lifting Mechanism {35} as they can get pinched.
Step 21: Install TV Brace
Install the TV Brace {33} to the Lifting Mechanism {35} while ensuring that the side marked "IN" is facing the Lifting Mechanism. Diagram shows the brace being attached with the "IN" side correctly oriented.
Step 22: Level and Tighten TV Brace
Level the TV Brace and tighten the 3 screws {14} using the supplied wrench {23}.
Step 23: Two-Person Step - Secure Lifting Mechanism
This step requires two people. Pull down the TV Brace until the upper arm is below the Safety Hole. DO NOT HIT MANTLE! The second person inserts the Safety Bolt {20} and installs the Safety Nut {21}. Slowly release the TV Brace. The Lifting Mechanism should be held at a horizontal position. Diagrams illustrate the process.
Step 24: Warning - Safety Bolt/Nut
❗ WARNING: Do not put hands into Lifting Mechanism without the Safety Bolt and Safety Nut installed. The power of the Lifting Mechanism can cause bodily injury!
Step 25: Two-Person Step - Hang Television
This step requires two people. Carefully hang the Television onto the TV Brace, making sure that all four hooks on the Vertical Braces {31} engage the TV Brace. DO NOT allow the Television to drop far enough to cause the Lifting Mechanism {35} to hit the mantle. MantelMount is pre-adjusted, but be prepared to remove the television to make corrections.
Diagram shows two people hanging a TV onto the mount.
Step 26: Adjust Bottom Stop Position
If the Lifting Mechanism {35} appears too close to the mantle, remove the television. Go to STEP 31 to adjust the Bottom Stop position. Repeat until the Lifting Mechanism is a safe distance from the mantle when the TV is in place.
Step 27: Check TV Level and Balance
Check the TV with a Level. Carefully slide the TV sideways, if required, until it is balanced and horizontal, up to a MAXIMUM OF 2 INCHES left or right. This distance should match the compensation distance used in STEP 11. If compensation was not made in STEP 11 but is needed now, remove the TV, repeat STEP 11, and slide the Wall Plate {32} in the OPPOSITE direction of the TV's sideways movement. Diagrams show the 2-inch adjustment range.
Step 28: Attach TV Brace to Vertical Braces
Install 4 Screws {15} through the TV Brace {33} and into the Vertical Braces {31}.
Step 29: Install Horizontal Bar
Install the Horizontal Bar {34} with Screws {15}. The Horizontal Bar MUST BE aligned with the end of the TV Brace {33} or the Lifting Mechanism will not work properly. Diagram shows alignment.
Step 30: Install Handle and Bumper
Install the Handle {28} with Screws {16} into the Horizontal Bar. The Handle MUST be within one inch (1") of the bottom of the Television frame so that it does not hit the mantle. Firmly insert the Rubber Bumper {30} into the center slot of the Horizontal Bar {34}. Diagram shows handle placement and bumper insertion.
Step 31: Adjusting for Bottom Stop Position
Loosen the Locknut and adjust the Bottom Stop screw to the desired stopping position. Turning the screw clockwise raises the Bottom Stop position; turning counter-clockwise lowers the TV closer to the mantle in the lowered position. Tighten the locknut after adjustments. Diagrams show the adjustment screw and locknut.
Step 32: Adjusting for Television Weight
With the Safety Bolt {20} in place, use the included Hex Tool {22} and a socket wrench to adjust the long bolt inside the Lifting Mechanism {35}. Turning this bolt increases or decreases the lifting force. Turn clockwise for heavier TVs, counter-clockwise for lighter TVs. Adjust until the TV gently stays in the lowered position, almost staying up against the Safety Bolt, but slowly lowering to the Bottom Stop. Diagrams show the adjustment bolt and the range of movement.
Step 33: Transfer Box Location
Measure carefully or use transfer paint to transfer the box location onto the Wall Cover {29}.
Step 34: Cut Hole in Wall Cover
Use a 1.5 inch Hole Saw drill bit to cut a hole through the Wall Cover {29} directly in the center of the marked area. Be careful not to damage the edge around the hole.
Step 35: Paint Wall Covers
Paint the Wall Covers {29} if desired.
Step 36: Install Wall Covers
Install the Wall Covers using the included adhesive Velcro strips. Apply Loop {26} pieces to the Wall Frame and Hook {25} pieces to the Wall Covers. Diagrams show hook and loop attachment.
Step 37: Remove Safety Bolt and Nut
With the television in the lowered position, remove the Safety Nut {21} and Safety Bolt {20} from the Lifting Mechanism {35}. KEEP THIS BOLT AND NUT in a safe place for future use (e.g., to remove the television or change Gas Springs). Recommendation: Tape them to the inside of the Wall Cover {29}.
⚠️ CAUTION: Never swing the television until it hits the mantle on either side.
⚠️ CAUTION: Never release the handle before it is fully upright. MantelMount is strongest in the top position, and allowing it to slam closed can damage televisions. Always control the lifting process.
⚠️ CAUTION: Never allow children to play around or operate MantelMount. Property damage or personal injury can occur.
