RadioShack 4-1 Family Favorites Remote User Guide
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a RadioShack 4-1 Family Favorites Remote. This remote allows you to control up to four home entertainment devices with one easy-to-use, compact unit. It also enables setting up favorite channels for different family members (Mom, Dad, kids).
After installing batteries, the remote can immediately control an RCA TV, VCR, DVD player, and Satellite receiver. For other brands, follow the programming instructions. For best results, read all instructions and keep this guide for future reference.
Installing Batteries
The RadioShack 4-1 Family Favorites Remote requires four AAA batteries (not supplied).
Battery Use And Safety
- Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type.
- Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
CAUTION: If the remote will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent chemical leakage that could damage electronic parts.
WARNING: Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury them.
To Install Batteries:
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the remote.
- Place the AAA batteries in the compartment, matching the + and - polarity symbols.
- Replace the cover.
NOTE: When the remote stops operating properly, replace the batteries within 10 minutes to preserve programming information.

FAV (Scan) key | Scan favorite channels (or all channels if favorites are not programmed). |
Number keys (0-9) | Directly enter channels (e.g., 09 or 31). |
+100 key | Enter channels over 100 (e.g., +100, 3, 1 = 131). For DVD players, access chapters over 10 (e.g., +100, 3 = 13). |
Enter key (after channel number) | Input channel numbers on some TVs or make selections on device menus. |
Playback keys (Play, Record) | Control VCR, PVR, DVD player, or Video On Demand (VOD). Press Record twice to record. |
Programming a Device
The remote is pre-programmed for RCA devices. To control other brands:
- Turn on the device and load media if necessary.
- Press the desired device key (TV, VCR, DVD, CBL/SAT).
- Press and hold the
P
key until the red LED blinks twice, then release. - Enter the first four-digit code for your device. The LED blinks once per digit. It blinks twice if the code is correct.
- Aim the remote at the device and press
Power
(orPLAY
if no Power key). The device should turn off. If not, repeat steps 2-5 with other codes for your brand. If no code works, see "Searching for Your Code". - Repeat for each device. Record working codes for future reference.
NOTE: For TV/DVD, TV/VCR/DVD, or TV/VCR Combos, use the TV key. For PVRs, use the VCR key. For HTiBs, use the DVD key. VCR/DVD combos may require programming for both VCR and DVD codes.
Searching for Your Code
If listed codes don't work or your brand isn't listed, use the search function:
- Press the device key (e.g., TV).

Checking the Codes
To find out which code is currently operating a device:
- Press the device key (e.g., TV).
- Press and hold
P

. Count the LED blinks (e.g., 3 blinks = 3). Write down the number. (0 blinks = 0). - Repeat step 4 for the remaining digits using keys

Reassigning Device Keys
You can reassign unused device keys (e.g., VCR) to control a second device of another type (e.g., DVD player):
- Press and hold

. The LED blinks twice. - Press the new device key (e.g., DVD), then the key to be reassigned (e.g., VCR). The VCR key is now ready to be programmed for the second DVD player.
To reassign other keys, substitute the appropriate device key in step 3. To clear a reassigned mode, repeat steps 1-2 and press the mode key twice.
Programming Favorite Channel Scan
Store up to 10 favorite channels for quick scanning:
NOTE: Only channels from one device can be stored for this feature.
- Press a device key.
- Press and hold
P
until the red LED blinks twice, then release. - Enter

(if less than 5 digits or 4 digits plus Enter). - Repeat step 4 for up to 10 channels.
NOTES:
- Entering more than 10 channels or a 10-second pause exits programming.
- If your device requires an

key after channel numbers, press it during programming. - To exit with fewer than 10 channels, press and hold
P
for three seconds. The LED blinks twice. - If you entered fewer than 10 channels and want to add more, you must re-enter all channels.
- To program new channels after reaching 10, reset the remote (see Troubleshooting).
Using Channel Scan
Use the FAV (Scan)
key to scan favorite channels or all channels:
- Press a device key.
- Press
SCAN
once.
The remote scans favorite channels first (if programmed), then all channels. If Favorite Channel Scan is not set up, scanning starts from the current channel.
Press any key to stop scanning at any time.
Setting Family Favorites
Customize four genre keys (News, Movies, Sports, Family) for up to three users (Mom, Dad, Kids). Each genre key can store up to three channels.
To set up a scan key:
- Press and hold
P
until the LED blinks twice, then release. - Enter

- Press a genre key (e.g., News).
- Press the device key (e.g., TV), followed by the desired channel number (up to 3 digits).
- Press and hold

for three seconds. The red LED blinks twice. - Repeat for each channel. Entering more than three channels overwrites the first.
NOTES:
- If your device requires an
Enter
key after channel numbers, press it during programming. - If you entered fewer than three channels and want to add more, you must re-enter all channels for that user and genre.
- To clear a genre key, follow steps 1-6 but do not enter a mode or channel at step 5.
Using Family Favorites
To access programmed favorite channels:
- Press the user key (Mom's, Dad's, Kid's).
- Press the genre key (e.g., Sports). The remote accesses the first programmed channel.
- Press the genre key again to access the next programmed channel for that user and genre.
Setting the Power Macro
Program the Power
key to perform a sequence of actions (up to 15 commands):
- Press and hold
P
until the red LED blinks twice, then release. - Enter

- Press and hold

until the red LED blinks twice, then release.
Pressing and holding the Power
key for about 2 seconds will execute the macro. To clear the macro, repeat steps 1-5 without entering commands in step 4.
NOTE: User or genre keys cannot be included in the Power macro.
Changing Volume Lock
The remote defaults to independent volume control for each device (Global Volume Unlock). You can change this to Global Volume Lock (one device controls all volume) or Individual Volume Unlock.
Locking Volume Control to One Mode (Global Volume Lock)
- Press and hold
P
until the red LED blinks twice, then release. - Enter

Unlocking Volume Control for a Single Device (Individual Volume Unlock)

Troubleshooting
- PROBLEM: LED does not blink. SOLUTION: Replace batteries with four new AAA alkaline batteries.
- PROBLEM: LED blinks, but device does not respond. SOLUTION: Ensure the remote is aimed at the device and is within 15 feet.
- PROBLEM: LED blinks one long blink. SOLUTION: An entry error occurred. Try the sequence again.
- PROBLEM: Remote does not control devices or commands are not working properly. SOLUTION: Try all listed codes for the device. Ensure the device uses an infrared remote control.
- PROBLEM: CH+, CH-, and LAST keys do not work for RCA TVs (1983-1987 models). SOLUTION: Only the original remote control operates these functions for these specific models.
- PROBLEM: No volume on a second TV. SOLUTION: Refer to "Changing Volume Lock".
- PROBLEM: Channels do not change properly. SOLUTION: If the original remote required an

on this remote after entering the channel number.
