Polaris 280/P28 Pool Cleaner Quick Start Guide
This manual contains essential installation and startup instructions. Read the online manual and all safety warnings before commencing installation.
Required Tools
- ? Pliers
- ? Tape Measure
- ✂️ Cutting Tool
Initial System Flush
- Turn on both the filter pump and the booster pump for five minutes to flush the system.
- Turn off both pumps.
Hose Setup
-
Measure Pool Depth
Measure the pool depth at the deepest part, at the main drain.
-
Identify Leader Hose
Identify the Leader Hose (marked).
-
Connect to Pool Wall
Insert Quick Disconnect (h) into the Universal Wall Fitting (UWF®) (i) in the pool wall and turn clockwise. Pull away to secure.
-
Mark and Cut Hose
Mark the pool depth measurement on the Leader Hose and Cut.
-
Determine Optimal Hose Length
Extend the hose and walk around the pool to the farthest point (do not include steps or seating areas). The hose length should be within 6 inches (15 cm) of the edge of the pool (longer or shorter). This is the cleaner's optimal hose length. If the hose is too long, measure the amount of hose overage.
-
Position Hose Floats
Reposition the hose floats (b) on the Leader Hose, ensuring they are an equal distance apart as shown in the diagrams.
-
Adjust Hose Length
Disconnect the middle swivel. Divide the measured hose overage (from Step 6) by 2. Cut this amount from each section of the Feed Hose. Reconnect the swivel and reposition the floats.

Cleaner Operation and Performance Check
- Turn on the filter pump to prime.
- Connect the hose to the UWF® and submerge the cleaner.
- Turn on the booster pump.
- Pull the cleaner to the waterline and hold it with one side wheel up. Hold the sweep hose to avoid getting wet.
- Mark the single side wheel (e.g., tuck a leaf or piece of grass inside the tire rim).
- Count the wheel rotations for one minute. The target speed is 28-32 rotations per minute (RPM).
Adjustments and Troubleshooting
If Speed is Less Than 28 RPM:
- Rinse any debris from the inline filter (g).
- Check the swivel (d) for excessive leaking or spraying.
- Verify the flow direction arrow on the swivel.
- Remove the blue restrictor disk (j).
If Speed is Greater Than 32 RPM:
- Loosen the pressure relief valve.
- Install the red restrictor disk (k).
Motion Types:
- Slower motion: Typically associated with turning or horizontal movement.
- Faster motion: Typically associated with climbing or vertical movement.
Note: Turn the Booster Pump OFF before making adjustments.
Important Safety Information: Vinyl Liner Pools
CAUTION: USE OF A POLARIS 280 IN A VINYL LINER POOL
Certain vinyl liner patterns are particularly susceptible to rapid surface wear or pattern removal caused by objects coming into contact with the vinyl surface, including pool brushes, pool toys, floats, fountains, chlorine dispensers, and automatic pool cleaners. Some vinyl liner patterns can be seriously scratched or abraded simply by rubbing the surface with a pool brush. Ink from the pattern can also rub off during the installation process or when it comes into contact with objects in the pool. Zodiac Pool Systems LLC is not responsible for, and the Limited Warranty does not cover, pattern removal, abrasion, or markings on vinyl liners.
