Characteristics
SEIKO KINETIC 5M82/5M83/5M84 are analog quartz watches developed with KINETIC technology. They utilize the wearer's body movement to generate electrical energy, which is stored in a rechargeable battery. This eliminates the need for periodic battery replacement, unlike conventional watches.
Your Watch Caliber
Please check the case back of your watch to determine its caliber. As shown on the right, the caliber is a 4-digit number located to the left of the separator line.

How to Charge and Start the Watch
- Shake the watch from side to side. *Shake evenly twice per second.
- Charge the battery fully.
- Set the time/calendar and wear the watch.

Number of Oscillations and Power Reserve
The power reserve is determined by the number of oscillations (shaking) the watch receives.
Number of Oscillations | Power Reserve |
---|---|
250 Oscillations | 1 Day |
500 Oscillations | 2 Days |
(More than 500 Oscillations) | Approximately 6 Days |
Instructions:
- If the watch has stopped, or if you notice the second hand moving with a 2-second interval, shake the watch side to side at a frequency of 2 times per second.
- Shaking the watch 250 times will provide a power reserve of 1 day. The second hand will then start moving at its normal speed.
- *It is recommended to shake the watch until a 2-day power reserve is achieved. For example, an additional 250 oscillations, totaling approximately 500 oscillations, will provide a 2-day power reserve.
- Wear the watch on your wrist.
Diagram: A visual representation showing a progression from "START" to "FULL CHARGE" with text indicating "720m" (distance/movement) and "Wear on wrist".
*The illustration above provides only recommendations for charging the battery and oscillations, which are necessary. The actual energy charge is highly individual.
Power Reserve Indicator
Press the button located at the 2 o'clock position to check the power reserve.
*For simplicity, press the button when the second hand is at the 12 o'clock position.
Power Reserve | Second Hand Movement | Approximate Duration |
---|---|---|
Quick Check | 5 seconds | More than 1 day |
10 seconds | More than 7 days | |
20 seconds | Approximately 1 month | |
30 seconds | Approximately 6 months |
After a rapid movement, the second hand will gradually slow down until it stops completely.
The second hand will resume normal movement after 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds have passed.

Low Battery Warning
If the second hand starts moving with a 2-second interval instead of the usual 1-second interval, it indicates that the battery will be fully discharged in approximately 24 hours. In this case, shake the watch side to side to charge the battery.
The watch remains accurate even when the second hand moves with a 2-second interval.
Quick Start
If a considerable amount of time has passed since the watch stopped, you can quickly start it with a few shakes.
The quick start function for a fully wound watch that has stopped is available for up to 3 years after the watch stops.
If the second hand starts moving with a 2-second interval, it means the battery will be fully discharged in approximately 24 hours. In this case, shake the watch side to side to charge the battery. Refer to "Number of Oscillations and Power Reserve".
After the second hand starts moving at a 1-second interval, wear your watch on your wrist. This will allow it to continue charging.
The watch remains accurate even when the second hand moves with a 2-second interval.
Rechargeable Battery
Electrical energy is generated during wear and stored in the rechargeable battery. This power source differs from a conventional battery and does not require periodic replacement.
When the rechargeable battery is fully charged, the watch can operate for approximately 6 months without needing a recharge.
The charge retention decreases over time, depending on environmental factors and usage conditions.
The rechargeable battery is an environmentally friendly energy source.
ATTENTION: Never install batteries of a different type (especially silver oxide) instead of the rechargeable battery. They may overheat and cause fire or explosion.
How to Use the Screw-down Crown (For models with a screw-down crown)
To unlock the crown:
Turn the crown counter-clockwise. (Then pull it out to set the time and calendar).
To lock the crown:
Return the crown to its original position, screwing it in clockwise while applying slight pressure.
Rotating Bezel (For models with a rotating bezel)
The rotating bezel can indicate up to 60 minutes of elapsed time.
- Rotate the bezel so that the mark (e.g., a triangle or dot) aligns with the minute hand.
- Observe the number on the bezel indicated by the minute hand.
Diagram: Watch illustration showing the bezel being rotated to align a mark with the minute hand. Another diagram shows elapsed time indicated on the bezel.
Note: On some models, the bezel rotates only counter-clockwise.
Notes on Watch Operation
How to Charge and Start
- To effectively charge the rechargeable battery, shake the watch side to side in an arc of about 20 cm.
- The force and speed with which you shake the watch do not affect the charging process.
- When charging, the rotor in the charging system drives the mechanism, producing a specific sound that does not indicate a malfunction.
- If the watch has not been worn for over a year, the second hand may not start moving at its normal 1-second interval even after performing the recommended number of oscillations. Continue oscillating until the second hand moves at a normal 1-second interval.
- The watch is equipped with an overcharge prevention function. Even if you continue to oscillate after the watch is fully charged, it will not cause malfunction.
- The watch features a quick start function. It can start operating after just a few oscillations. For more details, refer to the "Quick Start" section.
- It is not necessary to fully charge the watch, as it charges automatically when worn on the wrist.
- Wear the watch for at least 10 hours a day.
- Even if worn on the wrist, the watch will not charge if your arm is immobile.
Power Reserve Indicator
- The power reserve indicator provides only approximate information about how long the watch can operate without additional charging.
- You can press the button a second time consecutively to recheck the power reserve. However, if you wish to press it a third time, wait until the second hand resumes normal movement.
- When the second hand moves with a 2-second interval, the power reserve is low, and the indicator may not function.
Immediately after charging the battery, the second hand may indicate the power reserve incorrectly. Please check it again after 10-15 minutes.
Be cautious with watches featuring a transparent case back: If your watch has a glass case back, do not expose it to direct sunlight or other strong light sources, as this may increase energy consumption and reduce battery life. This will not happen if you turn the watch to its other side.
Setting the Time and Calendar (Notes)
- For Caliber 5M82, do not set the calendar between 21:00 and 01:00. For Calibers 5M84 and 5M83, do not set the calendar between 21:00 and 03:00. Otherwise, the setting may not occur correctly. If you must set the calendar during these times, first temporarily change the time to any other time, set the calendar, and then set the correct time.
- To set the time correctly, pull out the crown when the second hand is at the 12 o'clock position and return it to its original position simultaneously with a time signal.
- When setting the hour hand, ensure that the AM/PM is set correctly. The watch is designed so that the calendar changes at midnight (12 AM). Set the hands to a time past 12 o'clock to determine if it is AM or PM. If the calendar changes, it is AM. If the calendar does not change, it is PM.
- When setting the minute hand, first set it about 4-5 minutes ahead of the desired time, then move it back to set the exact time.
- When setting the time, pay attention to ensure the second hand moves with a 1-second interval.
- The date must be adjusted at the end of each month that has fewer than 31 days. To do this, pull out the crown to the first click and rotate it until the correct date appears.
Notes on Technical Inspection
Watches are precise mechanisms. Wear of parts or insufficient lubrication can cause the watch to lag or stop. Periodic technical inspection is recommended to maintain the accuracy of your watch.
