Types of doors

Choosing the correct ironmongery for your home is an important security consideration. This diagram outlines important aspects to consider.

Sliding door

Locks used on sliding doors are generally cylinder claw bolt locks which offer good security.

Recommendations: Pull handles, cylinder claw locks, patio door locks.

Front & Pivot Doors

The front door is the first line of defence. It should be a solid timber or steel door that is difficult to break through. A lever lock with multiple key differs (5-lever lock) or ideally a cylinder lock is important.

The use of correct hinges/pivots for your specific door is also important and determined by the door's size and type. The front door is also a focal point; once security is established, aesthetics should be the next consideration.

Other External Doors

Glass doors, stable doors, or rear entrance doors are often overlooked for security. As these provide direct access from the outside, high-security doors and locks are important.

Locksets

Locksets are the most common and convenient way to upgrade or replace locks. They include the lock, handles, keys, and all fittings, available in various security levels. SECURITY GATE LOCKS

Security gates are common for adding a layer of security. Sliding security doors are generally installed with a cylinder. For traditional steel-tubed security gates, a 5-Lever security gate lock is highly recommended.

NIGHT LATCHES

These can be used as an additional security layer with a normal mortice lock, but only on inward opening doors with timber frames. A nightlatch is generally used as an additional layer of security on external doors. It can be used as a slam lock on exit and a deadlock from the inside.
