Introduction

This document provides instructions for use and technical descriptions for the AESCULAP FAV5 CL/FORTIS battery-powered clipping machine.

Safety Instructions

⚠️ Electrical Shock and Fire Hazard!

  • Do not open the product (except for battery replacement).
  • Connect the product only to a mains socket with a protective earth conductor (PE).
  • Before use, check the product's functionality and condition.
  • Store the charger and Li-ion batteries at room temperature.
  • Do not immerse the charger or Li-ion batteries in water.
  • Fully charge the Li-ion battery before first use.
  • Observe electromagnetic compatibility (EMV) guidelines.

To avoid damage caused by improper assembly or use, and to prevent loss of warranty:

  • Use the product strictly according to these instructions.
  • Observe safety information and maintenance tips.
  • Only use accessories not listed in these instructions with the manufacturer's consent.

The product and accessories may only be used by persons with the necessary qualifications, knowledge, and experience.

Keep the operating instructions in a location accessible to the user.

Observe applicable standards.

Ensure the electrical installation in the room meets IEC standards.

Disconnect the device from the mains by pulling the power plug – do not pull the cable.

Do not use the product in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Do not use a damaged or defective product. Immediately dispose of any damaged product.

? Note: The device may be used by children aged 8 and above, and by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lacking experience and knowledge, provided they are supervised by a person responsible for their safety or have received instructions on safe use and understand the associated risks.

Do not allow children to play with the device.

Cleaning and maintenance tasks should not be performed by children without supervision.

  • Do not use the product in potentially explosive atmospheres.

⚠️ Caution: Incorrect product setup can lead to damage or malfunction!

  • Do not expose the product to direct sunlight or moisture.
  • Do not cover ventilation slots.
  • Connect only to mains voltage between 100 V and 240 V, with a frequency of 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
  • Ensure the mains socket used is freely accessible.

The AESCULAP FAV5 CL/FORTIS is a battery-powered clipping machine designed for animal grooming.

? Note: The GT330 #10 clipping head (USA+GB) is supplied with the machine. Different clipping heads can be used depending on the application.

Intended Use

The device is intended solely for clipping animal hair.

The AESCULAP FAV5 CL/FORTIS is designed for clipping small animals.

The AESCULAP FAV5 CL/FORTIS must be used with a clipping head appropriate for the intended application.

Operation

Getting Started and Assembly

If the following regulations are not observed, Aesculap is not liable for the device's functionality.

When assembling and operating the product, observe:

  • National regulations concerning installation and use.
  • National regulations concerning fire and explosion protection.
  • Application guidelines resulting from IEC/VDE regulations.

Connecting Accessories

Combinations of accessories not specified in these instructions may only be used if they are intended for the specific application and do not adversely affect performance or safety requirements.

Attaching the Clipping Head

Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2.

To attach the clipping head (part 12):

  • If the cutting unit latch (part 13) is closed, open it using a screwdriver (see Figure 1).
  • Place the clipping head (part 12) onto the open latch (part 13), as shown in Figure 2.
  • Press the On/Off switch (part 11).
  • Lightly press the clipping head (part 12) towards the FAV5 CL/FORTIS clipping machine. A click indicates it is securely attached.
  • Ensure the clipping head (part 12) is correctly seated on the clipping machine.

Mounting/Dismounting Power Plug Adapters

The charger power supply comes with an EU adapter pre-installed.

? Note: The USA adapter is integrated into the power supply. It can be unfolded if no other adapter is attached.

To remove EU/UK/AUS adapters (see Figure 3):

  • Unscrew the fixing screw (part 18) from the adapter (part 15).
  • Press the lock (part 16) and remove the adapter (part 15) from the power supply.

To mount EU/UK/AUS adapters:

  • Slide the adapter (part 15) onto the power supply (part 14) until the lock (part 16) clicks into place.
  • Screw the fixing screw (part 18) into the adapter (part 15).

Connecting the Charger and Charging the Li-ion Battery

⚠️ Fire Hazard due to short circuits from liquids or metal parts!

  • Do not short-circuit the Li-ion battery.

⚠️ Risk of injury or material damage from damaged Li-ion batteries!

  • Before charging, check Li-ion batteries for damage.
  • Do not use or charge damaged Li-ion batteries.

⚠️ Caution: Storing discharged Li-ion batteries for extended periods leads to loss of capacity/performance!

  • For long-term storage, keep Li-ion batteries fully charged and recharge them monthly.

⚠️ Caution: Inserting an incorrect Li-ion battery into the charging socket can damage the product, charging socket, or battery!

  • Only insert Li-ion batteries into their designated sockets.
  • Insert Li-ion batteries in the correct orientation.

? Note: Turn off the clipping machine before charging.

? Note: Li-ion batteries heat up during charging.

? Note: Disconnect the charger's mains cable from the power outlet when not in use.

Connecting the Charger (part 4):

  • Connect the appliance plug of the mains cable (part 5) to the charger (part 4).
  • Connect the mains plug of the mains cable (part 5) to the power socket.
  • Insert the Li-ion battery (part 8) into charging socket 6 on the charger (part 4) and charge fully.
  • OR
  • Insert the clipping machine (part 2) with the battery inserted into charging socket 10 on the charger (part 4) and charge.

The charge indicator (part 7 or 9) will flash green. Once charging is complete, the indicator will light up solid green, and the machine/battery will be ready for use.

Checking the Operation of the Battery-Powered Clipping Machine

  • Visual inspection.
  • Check the position of the On/Off switch.
  • Insert the battery (refer to Battery Replacement section).
  • Correctly attach the clipping head and lubricate if necessary (refer to Using the Clipping Head section).
  • Keep charged Li-ion batteries ready.
  • Clean the clipping machine before use (refer to Cleaning/Disinfection section).

Checking the Charger Operation

  • Visual inspection.
  • Before connecting to the mains:
  • Check the mains cable (part 5) for damage.
  • Inspect the product for potential damage (e.g., bent charging contacts).
  • Connect the mains cable (part 5) to the charging station's socket.
  • Plug the mains plug into the wall socket.
  • Insert the Li-ion battery (part 8) into charging socket 6 on the charger (part 4) and charge fully.
  • OR
  • Insert the clipping machine (part 2) with the battery inserted into charging socket 10 on the charger (part 4) and charge.

The charge indicator (part 7 or 9) will flash green. Once charging is complete, the indicator will light up solid green, and the machine/battery will be ready for use.

The product is ready for operation.

Using the Clipping Head

Sharpening the Cutting Blade

? Note: For sharpening the cutting blade, contact technical service (refer to Technical Service section).

Replacing the Clipping Head

⚠️ Risk of cuts from sharp cutting blades!

Handle the FAV5 CL/FORTIS clipping head with care.

To replace the clipping head (part 12):

  • Turn off the clipping machine using the On/Off switch (part 11).
  • Press the clipping head lock (part 14) (see Figure 4).
  • Slide the clipping head (part 12) forward (see Figure 5).
  • Remove the clipping head (part 12).
  • Clean the opened cutting unit latch with a brush.
  • Attach the new clipping head (part 12) to the latch.
  • Press the On/Off switch (part 11).
  • Lightly press the clipping head (part 12) towards the clipping machine. A click indicates it is securely attached.
  • Ensure the clipping head (part 12) is correctly seated on the clipping machine.

Oiling the Clipping Head

  • Clean the upper and lower cutting blades with a soft cloth or brush. Ensure the gaps between the teeth are clean.
  • Lightly oil the upper and lower cutting blades with GT604 oil.

Replacing the Li-ion Battery

(See Figure 6)

  • Grip the clipping machine (part 2) and press the battery release (part 3).
  • Remove the Li-ion battery (part 8) from the clipping machine (part 2).
  • Insert the charged Li-ion battery (part 8) into the clipping machine (part 2) until it clicks into place.

The clipping machine is now ready for use.

Maintenance and Care

Cleaning and Disinfection

? Note: Observe hygiene and disposal regulations!

Manual Cleaning/Disinfection

⚠️ Risk of electric shock and fire!

  • Before cleaning, unplug the device from the electrical socket.
  • Ensure no liquids enter the product's interior.
  • After cleaning/disinfection, ventilate the product for at least one minute.

⚠️ Caution: Improper cleaning or use of unsuitable cleaning/disinfecting agents can cause damage!

  • Use commercially available cleaning agents for surfaces.
  • Never immerse the product in water or cleaning fluid.
  • Do not pour liquids into the charging sockets.
  • Clean the charging socket contacts with utmost care.

Wipe the product housing with a lint-free cloth dampened with a commercially available disinfectant. If necessary, after the exposure time, remove residue with a water-dampened, lint-free cloth.

Use dry, lint-free cloths for drying.

Clean charging socket contacts with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Do not use corrosive chemical agents.

Repeat cleaning/disinfection if necessary.

Inspection and Checks

  • Allow the product to cool to room temperature.
  • After each cleaning and disinfection, check the product for cleanliness, proper function, and absence of damage.
  • Lubricate the clipping head if necessary (refer to Oiling the Clipping Head section).
  • Check if the product emits unusual noises, overheats, or vibrates excessively during operation.
  • Check if the clipping head blades are damaged, chipped, or dull.
  • Dispose of any damaged product immediately.

Maintenance

For trouble-free operation, Aesculap recommends annual maintenance.
