How to Use the Elliptical Exerciser
Moving the Exerciser
Moving the exerciser requires two people. Lift the track while one person pulls the upright and the other lifts the track to allow it to roll on the front wheels.
Leveling the Exerciser
If the exerciser rocks, adjust the leveling feet beneath the track until the rocking motion is eliminated.
Exercising
To mount, hold the upper body arms or handlebars and step onto the lower pedal, then the other pedal. Push the pedals to start a continuous motion. The crank arm covers can turn in either direction. To dismount, wait for the pedals to stop completely. Step off the higher pedal first, then the lower pedal.
Console Operation
Console Diagram and Features
The console provides feedback on time, distance, resistance, and heart rate. It features manual mode, twelve preset workouts, and an MP3/CD player input for audio.
- Manual Mode: Turn on the console by pressing a button or pedaling. The display shows time, resistance, and distance/pace. Adjust resistance using the increase/decrease buttons.
- Preset Workouts: Select a workout using the Workouts buttons. The display shows duration, maximum resistance, and workout number. Each workout is divided into segments with programmed resistance levels.
- Heart Rate Monitoring: Measure heart rate by resting palms on the handgrip pulse sensor. Ensure contacts are clean and hands are not moving excessively. A heart symbol will flash when pulse is detected.
- Fan: Use the Fan button to select high/low speed or turn off. The fan may turn off automatically if pedals stop moving for 30 seconds.
- Sound System: Connect an MP3 player or CD player via the audio cable to listen to music or audio books. Adjust volume using the player's controls.
- Automatic Shut-off: The console will turn off automatically if pedals do not move for several seconds (pausing) or several minutes (shutting down).
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Regularly inspect and tighten all parts. Replace worn parts immediately.
Cleaning: Use a damp cloth and mild soap. Keep liquids away from the console and avoid direct sunlight.
Drive Belt Adjustment
If pedals slip, the drive belt may need adjustment. This involves accessing the crank arm area, loosening specific screws, adjusting tension using an idler mechanism, and reassembling.
Reed Switch Adjustment
If the console display feedback is incorrect, the reed switch may need adjustment. This involves loosening a screw on the crank arm cover, sliding the reed switch closer to or away from a magnet on the pulley, and retightening.
Console Troubleshooting
- Dim Display: Replace batteries. Most console issues stem from low batteries.
- Heart Rate Not Displaying or Incorrect: Ensure hands are correctly placed on the pulse sensor contacts (see "How to Use" section).
Leveling and Greasing
- Leveling: Refer to the "How to Level the Elliptical Exerciser" section for instructions on adjusting leveling feet if the exerciser rocks.
- Greasing Rollers: If rollers squeak, apply a small amount of white marine grease equally to each roller and pedal until a thin film is distributed along the track. Wipe off excess grease.
Exercise Guidelines
Proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
Exercise Intensity
Use heart rate to determine intensity. The chart below shows recommended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise based on age.
To find your training zone, locate your age at the bottom of the chart. The numbers above your age indicate:
- Lowest number: Heart rate for fat burning.
- Middle number: Heart rate for maximum fat burning.
- Highest number: Heart rate for aerobic exercise.
- Burning Fat: Exercise at a low intensity level for a sustained period. Aim for your heart rate to be near the lowest number in your training zone for fat burning, or the middle number for maximum fat burning.
- Aerobic Exercise: To strengthen your cardiovascular system, perform aerobic exercise. Aim for your heart rate to be near the highest number in your training zone.
Workout Guidelines
- Warming Up: Start with 5-10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to increase body temperature, heart rate, and circulation.
- Training Zone Exercise: Exercise for 20-30 minutes within your training zone. Breathe regularly and deeply.
- Cooling Down: Finish with 5-10 minutes of stretching to improve flexibility and prevent post-exercise issues.
Exercise Frequency
Complete three workouts per week with at least one rest day between sessions. After a few months, you may increase to five workouts per week. Consistency is key to making exercise a regular part of your life.
