Aesculap Spine Micro Lumbar Discectomy System
System Overview
The Caspar MLD system is utilized during a microsurgical approach to retract the posterior soft tissues during lumbar discectomy procedures. The system is comprised of narrow, lateral, variable blades which mount on an easy to use, highly stable, ratcheted retractor instrument.
The paraspinal, muscle-splitting approach described by Wiltse has been miniaturized. This enables a minimally invasive approach to the extraforaminal disc herniation, generally preserving the facet joint.
The MLD System is designed to:
- Reduce the size of the incision
- Limit trauma to the surrounding tissue
- Reduce operating time
- Reduce blood loss
- Reduce length of hospital stay

Paraspinal Approach
The paraspinal approach involves the following anatomical structures:

- M. psoas major
- Intervertebral disc
- Disc herniation
