MotionProtect Curtain User Manual
Updated May 28, 2021
Product Overview
The MotionProtect Curtain is a curtain-type wireless motion detector. It features a narrow horizontal detection angle, making it ideal for indoor perimeter control, specifically for windows, doorways, and other entry/exit points of a guarded facility. The detector offers a maximum motion detection distance of 15 meters.
It integrates seamlessly into Ajax security systems, connecting to an Ajax hub via the secure Jeweller protocol. The wireless coverage can extend up to 1,700 meters with a clear line-of-sight. The pre-installed battery provides up to 3 years of autonomous operation. Setup and notifications are managed through an iOS or Android app, allowing users to receive alerts via push notifications, SMS, or calls. Ajax systems can also connect to a central monitoring station of a security company.
Note: Connection to ocBridge Plus and uartBridge integration modules is not provided.
Functional Elements
The MotionProtect Curtain comprises the following key components:
- 1. LED indicator: Visual status indicator.
- 2. Detector light filter: Directs the detection beam.
- 3. Screw aperture for SmartBracket attachment panel: For mounting the detector.
- 4. QR-Code: Used for device pairing and identification.
- 5. Power button: For turning the device on/off.
- 6. Tamper button: Detects unauthorized detachment from the surface.
- 7. SmartBracket attachment panel: The perforated part of this panel is integral to tamper protection, triggering an alert if the detector is pulled away from a surface.
Operating Principle
MotionProtect Curtain's infrared (IR) sensors detect intrusion by identifying moving objects with a temperature similar to that of the human body. When the system is armed, the detector polls its two IR sensors. Upon detecting motion, it instantly sends an alarm state to the hub, and the device's green LED flashes. The hub then triggers sirens and notifies the user and the security company. Motion alarms are sent every 5 seconds.
To minimize false alarms, the detector features Correlation Signal Processing. When enabled, it only sends an alarm state if identical motion signals are registered by both IR sensors. If disabled, an alarm is sent even if only one IR sensor is triggered.
Pairing the Detector with a Hub
Before you start pairing:
- Ensure your hub is powered on and has an active Internet connection (via Ethernet and/or GSM).
- Install the Ajax application on your smartphone. Create an account, add your hub to the app, and create at least one room.
- Check the hub's status in the app to confirm it is disarmed and not updating.
Note: Only users with admin permissions can add devices to the hub.
Pairing MotionProtect Curtain:
- In the Ajax mobile app, tap "Add device".
- Name the device, scan the QR code (located on the back of the detector or its packaging) or enter it manually, select the room for placement, and tap "Add". A countdown will begin.
- Turn on the detector by holding its power button for 3 seconds.
For detection and pairing to occur, the device must be within the hub's wireless coverage. The connection request is sent to the hub only once the device is turned on.
If the MotionProtect Curtain fails to connect, it will automatically power down within 6 seconds after turning on; no manual retry is needed. If the detector was previously paired with another hub, turn it off and follow the standard pairing procedure.
After pairing, the detector will appear in the app's hub device list. Device status updates depend on the polling interval set in the hub's settings (default is 36 seconds). If the detector identifies movement before the system is armed, it will activate on the next hub poll, not immediately.

Detector Placement
The effectiveness of the security system relies on proper detector placement. When installing the MotionProtect Curtain, consider the direction of the light filter and any obstacles that might affect the detector's field of view and radio signal transmission.
Consider both the detection range and beam width during installation. Incorrect placement can lead to false alarms or improper device operation.
Detection Angles and Ranges
The detector has a horizontal detection angle of 6° and a vertical detection angle of 90°. The diagram illustrates the detection zones at different distances.
Detection range | Beam width |
---|---|
3 meters | 0.3 meters |
6 meters | 0.6 meters |
9 meters | 0.9 meters |
12 meters | 1.25 meters |
15 meters | 1.55 meters |
Note: The device is developed for indoor use only.
Installation Recommendations
Do not install the detector:
- Outside the premises (outdoors).
- In front of windows within reach of direct sunlight.
- Opposite objects that rapidly change temperature (e.g., electric and gas heaters).
- Opposite moving objects with temperatures close to human body heat (e.g., curtains near a heating radiator).
- In areas with fast air circulation (near fans, open windows, or doors).
- Near metal objects and mirrors that can interfere with radio signals.
- In premises with temperature and humidity outside the permitted range.
- Closer than 1 meter to a hub.
If the detector reacts to interference and causes false alarms, and relocation is impossible, enabling Correlation Signal Processing in the settings can help.
Note: When Correlation Signal Processing is enabled, the motion detection range is reduced depending on the detector sensitivity chosen.
Sensitivity | Motion detection range w/ Signal Correlation Processing * | Motion detection range w/o Signal Correlation Processing * |
---|---|---|
Low | Up to 6 m | Up to 11 m |
Normal | Up to 7 m | Up to 13 m |
High | Up to 8 m | Up to 15 m |
*at an ambient temperature of 23°C
If possible, avoid situations where the detector identifies movement at a longer distance than required. Installing the detector in an enclosed space, such as an archway, is recommended to ensure it triggers only for persons entering the space.
To prevent false alarms from domestic animals, install the detector upside down, leaving space below the detection zone for animals to move freely.
Detector placement also depends on the distance to the hub and potential obstacles (walls, furniture) that may hinder the radio signal. Check the signal strength at the chosen location; a single bar may indicate unstable operation. Ensure maximum signal level by moving the device, even small adjustments (20 cm) can help. If signal levels remain low or unstable, consider using a ReX radio signal range extender.
Note: The detector's light filter should be directed perpendicularly to the expected entry path into the room.
Ensure no furniture, plants, vases, or glass structures obstruct the detector's field of view.
Recommendation: Install the detector at a height of 2.4 meters.
Installing the detector at other heights may narrow the detection zone and affect motion detection quality. MotionProtect Curtain cannot detect movement behind glass; therefore, avoid installing it where glass structures (like open windows) might block its view.
Detector Installation
Before installing the detector, ensure the chosen location is appropriate as described in this manual.
There are two options for installing MotionProtect Curtain:
- Directly to a surface.
- To the included bracket.
Installation procedure:
- Attach the SmartBracket panel or a bracket to the surface using the included screws or other reliable fasteners. Screw the SmartBracket panel onto the included bracket.
- Attach the detector to the SmartBracket attachment panel.
- Mount the detector on the SmartBracket attachment panel using a screw.
Double-sided adhesive tape is intended only for temporary installation. It can dry out, becoming unreliable and potentially causing false alarms or device damage.
If the detector's LED does not light up after attachment, check the tamper status in the Ajax app and ensure the detector is securely fitted to the attachment panel. Detaching the detector from the surface or panel will trigger a notification.
Note: After installing the detector, run the Detection Zone Test. If incorrect operation occurs, the detector may need relocation.
Detector Care and Battery Replacement
Regularly check the integrity of the MotionProtect Curtain detector. Clean the detector body from dust, spider webs, and other contaminants using a soft, dry cloth suitable for equipment care.
Do not use cleaning substances containing alcohol, acetone, gasoline, or other active solvents. Wipe the lens carefully; scratches on the plastic may reduce the detector's sensitivity.
The pre-installed battery provides up to 3 years of autonomous operation (at a 3-minute polling interval). If the battery is depleted, the security system will send a notification, and the LED will smoothly light up and go out when motion is detected or the tamper is activated.
