VIII. Exercise Guide
PLEASE NOTE: Before beginning any exercise program, consult your physician. This is particularly important if you are over 45 or have pre-existing health problems. Pulse sensors are not medical devices; factors like user movement can affect accuracy. They serve as exercise aids for general heart rate trend determination.
Exercising is beneficial for weight control, fitness improvement, and reducing the effects of aging and stress. Regular, enjoyable exercise is key to success. Your fitness level is influenced by your heart and lungs' efficiency in delivering oxygen to muscles, which use it for energy. This is aerobic activity. A fitter body means your heart works less, reducing wear and tear.
Warm Up
Start each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching and light exercises. A proper warm-up increases body temperature, heart rate, and circulation, preparing you for exercise. Ease into your workout. After warming up, increase intensity as desired, maintaining it for maximum performance. Breathe regularly and deeply.
Cool Down
Finish each workout with a light jog or walk for at least 1 minute. Follow this with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching to cool down, which improves muscle flexibility and helps prevent post-exercise issues.
Workout Guidelines
The graph illustrates how your pulse should behave during general fitness exercise. Remember to warm up and cool down.
Graph Description: The graph plots Heart Rate (vertical axis) against Age (horizontal axis). It shows:
- Maximum Heart Rate: A line indicating the maximum heart rate.
- Target Zone: A shaded area between 70% and 85% of maximum heart rate, representing the optimal training zone.
- Cool Down: A lower range indicated for cooling down.
Example values on the graph:
- At age 25, the target zone is approximately 140-170 BPM.
- At age 50, the target zone is approximately 110-140 BPM.
- At age 75, the target zone is approximately 80-110 BPM.

X. Hand Pulse Technology
This product features hand pulse sensors that detect tiny EKG/ECG signals from heartbeats, amplified 1000 times for computer display.
To Ensure Proper Operation:
- Maintain good, consistent contact on all four sensors.
- User's skin should not be too dry or too wet.
Other Factors Affecting Readings:
- Changes in grip during movement (slow pace walking to running).
- Tightening of hand muscles, which produces small electrical signals.
- Static electricity charges from the air or from walking on the treadmill.
EKG/ECG sensors may filter out actual signals or include "noise," causing delayed or incorrect pulse readings. Medical conditions or lack of electrical signal in hands can also affect readings.
These limitations apply to hand pulse technology, even in expensive hospital systems. While effective on stationary bikes and ellipticals, they are less precise on treadmills. Lifespan Fitness offers treadmills with wireless heart rate receivers for potentially more accurate readings.
Testing Hand Pulse Sensors:
To test sensor accuracy, hold them while standing still on the sidestep rails (not walking). This eliminates movement and static electricity factors. If hands are dry, moisten them slightly (saliva is a good conductor).
