Safety Precautions

The following checks should be performed for the continued protection of the customer and service technician.

Leakage Current Check

Before returning the unit to the customer, make sure you perform either (1) a leakage current check or (2) a line to chassis resistance check. If the leakage current exceeds 0.5 milliamps, or if the resistance from chassis to either side of the power cord is less than 460 kohms, the unit is defective.

General Servicing Cautions

  • Heed Cautions: Be sure to heed cautions indicated on labels or seals regarding specific parts or chassis.
  • Electric Shock: Be aware of AC voltage on internal metal parts. Use an isolating transformer and gloves when servicing energized units. Unplug the power cord when replacing parts.
  • Disassembly/Assembly: Handle sheet metal parts with care to avoid cuts from burrs. Use gloves.
  • Designated Parts: Use only designated replacement parts, especially for safety-critical components marked with 'z' in diagrams and parts lists.
  • Wire Arrangement: Restore wires and parts to their original positions to prevent noise generation and ensure safety.
  • Post-Servicing Inspection: Ensure all parts are reassembled correctly. Conduct insulation checks (minimum 1MΩ resistance between power plug terminals and exposed metal parts) after servicing.

Important Safety Parts

Many parts have special safety properties not easily distinguishable by sight. Always use parts with the designated part numbers. Using incorrect parts can lead to electric shock, fire, or other dangerous situations.

Dimensions

Width: 434 mm

Height: 102.5 mm

Depth: 265 mm

(Refer to diagram for detailed measurements and component placement.)

Wire Arrangement

If wire bundles are untied or moved during servicing, ensure they are rearranged neatly as they were originally. Incorrect arrangement can cause noise generation.

(Diagram shows wire arrangement viewed from the top, indicating front and back panel sides.)

Disassembly

Disassemble in the order indicated by the flow diagram. Reassembly should follow the reverse order. Pay attention to assembly instructions.

Disassembly Flow: TOP CABINET → FRONT PANEL ASSY / POWER PCB / POWER TRANSFORMER / REAR PANEL / MAIN PCB ASSY / MCU PCB ASSY

Front Panel Assembly Disassembly: Includes removing screws, cutting wire clamp bands, loosening style pins, and disconnecting connector wires.

(Detailed steps reference specific PCBs and exploded views.)

Block and Level Diagram

This diagram illustrates the signal flow and levels within the PMA-710AE. It shows input stages (PHONO, CD, TUNER, LINE, RECORDER), tone controls, volume control, buffer, power amplifier stages, and output connections (SPEAKER A/B, HEADPHONE, PRE OUT). It also indicates voltage regulators and control/relay functions.

Adjustment: Idling Current

Required Equipment: DC Voltmeter

  1. Setup: Place unit in a well-ventilated area (15°C - 30°C). Set controls: POWER switch OFF, VOLUME control to minimum (fully counterclockwise), SPEAKER terminals open.
  2. Adjustment:
    1. Remove top cover. Connect DC Voltmeter to test points CN31 and CN32 on the Main PCB.
    2. Connect power cord and turn the unit ON.
    3. Immediately after power on, adjust VR31 and VR32 for a DC voltmeter reading of 10 ±1mV.
    4. After 2 minutes warm-up, readjust VR31 and VR32 for 10 ±1mV.
    5. After 10 minutes warm-up, readjust VR31 and VR32 for 10 ±0.5mV.

Troubleshooting

1. Power Cannot Be Turned On (LED Off):

  • Check power supply to standby transformer (T901).
  • If power is not supplied: Check for broken wires in T901.
  • If power is supplied: Check D941-944, C941, or C943 for malfunction.

2. Power On, No Sound (Both Channels):

  • 2.1. Standby Mode: Check all connectors are inserted completely. If not, check RC71 or IC41 for malfunction.
  • 2.2. Muting Mode (LED Flashing Red): Check power amplifier output offset voltage. If 1V or greater, power amplifier circuit may be damaged. If no offset voltage, check temperature detection or protection circuit.
  • 2.3. Protection Mode (LED Flashes Red): Check power amplifier output offset voltage. If 1V or greater, power amplifier circuit may be damaged. If no offset voltage, check bias current.
  • 2.4. Normal Operation (LED Green/Orange): Check connectors, fuse (F901), voltages, switching/speaker relays, and signal lines.

3. Power On, No Sound (Single Channel):

  • Check connectors, voltages, switching relays, switching ICs, speaker relays, and signal lines.

Wiring Diagram

The wiring diagram illustrates the interconnection of various boards within the PMA-710AE, including the Main Board (CUP12196-1), Power Board (CUP12196-2), Front Board (CUP12195-1), Volume Board (CUP12195-4), MCU Board (CUP12195-2), and Function Board (CUP12195-3). It shows signal lines and power connections.

Notes for Schematic Diagram

WARNING: Parts marked with 'z' have critical characteristics. Use only manufacturer-recommended replacement parts.

CAUTION: Perform leakage current or line-to-chassis resistance checks before returning the unit. If leakage current exceeds 0.5mA or chassis resistance is less than 460kΩ, the unit is defective.

NOTICE: Resistance values are in Ohms (k=1,000, M=1,000,000). Capacitance values are in micro Farads (P=micro-micro Farad). All measurements are taken at no-signal input condition. Circuits and parts are subject to change without prior notice.
