Fender Acoustic Junior, Acoustic Junior Go, Acoustic SFX II User Manual

Introduction

Fender's Acoustic Junior, Acoustic Junior Go, and Acoustic SFX II amplifiers deliver full, natural sound for acoustic-electric guitars and microphones, housed in custom-tuned wooden cabinets. All three amplifiers feature wireless Bluetooth streaming, studio-quality stereo effects, an auxiliary input and headphone output, configurable XLR line outputs, and a USB connection for audio recording.

The Acoustic Junior and Acoustic Junior Go are portable systems for solo performances, each with two channels offering different studio-quality stereo effects. The Acoustic Junior Go includes a convenient and environmentally friendly rechargeable battery, providing five hours of full-volume operation on a single charge. With 100 watts of power, an 8-inch speaker, a tweeter, a convenient rear-tilt kickstand, and lightweight design, both models are ideal for practice and performance.

The Acoustic SFX II features a two-channel design for solo performances or playing with a band. It offers studio-quality stereo effects and the impressive Stereo Field Expansion (SFX) technology, which goes beyond stereo to create an immersive, room-filling soundstage. It increases power to 200 watts for complete guitar and vocal performance.

Image shows three Fender amplifiers: Acoustic Junior (left), Acoustic SFX II (center), and Acoustic Junior Go (right).

Control Panel

Diagram of the control panel with labeled sections A through K.

Control Panel Layout

A. CHANNEL INPUT: Combination input accepts XLR and high-impedance 1/4" inputs. Connect your instrument or microphone here; the XLR input provides phantom power for microphones that require it (do not use ribbon microphones, as phantom power can damage them).

B. VOLUME: Adjusts overall volume level (including headphone and USB/line outputs).

C. FX LEVEL: Sets the intensity of the effect selected by the FX SELECT control.

D. FX SELECT: Choose from effects including Room and Hall reverb, reverb, delay, chorus, vibratone, delay plus chorus, delay and reverb, as indicated by the EFFECTS DISPLAY. Effects are not selected fully clockwise or counter-clockwise. An optional footswitch allows tap-tempo delay time control for reverb, delay, delay plus chorus, and delay plus reverb effects.

E. EFFECTS DISPLAY: LEDs illuminate to indicate the effect settings in use for each channel.

F. POWER INDICATOR: On Acoustic Junior and Acoustic SFX II models, the indicator light is solid green when the amplifier is on. On Acoustic Junior Go models, the indicator light is solid green for sufficient battery charge; solid yellow for low battery charge; and solid red for insufficient charge for operation or a faulty battery. When the Acoustic Junior Go is plugged into AC power and the amplifier is on, the indicator light flashes while the battery is charging and is solid green when charging is complete. When the battery is charging with the power off, the indicator light flashes at a lower rate during charging; when charging is complete, the indicator light is solid green for five minutes before turning off.

G. PAIR: Bluetooth pairing button; see 'Bluetooth' section.

H. STEREO SFX (ACOUSTIC SFX II MODELS ONLY): Sets the extent of the Stereo Field Expansion (SFX) effect, creating a 360-degree stereo image using built-in effects and a side-mounted speaker. Note that for SFX to be audible, the effect must be selected using the FX SELECT control (D) and FX LEVEL (C) set to minimum. Note: The delay effect is stereo-panned through the PHONES output (N) and BALANCED LINE OUTPUTS (P) only if this control knob is set to minimum.

I. PHASE: Press to invert the speaker's channel polarity to reduce feedback (includes headphone and USB/line outputs).

J. LOW, MID AND HIGH: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble frequencies respectively.

K. LOOPER BUTTONS (REC/DUB, PLAY/STOP, UNDO): Record/overdub, play/stop, and undo functions. See 'Looper' section.

* Indicates identical channel two features on the opposite side of the control panel.

NOTE: Refer to the 'Footswitch' section for additional features not found on the control panel, including remote effects on/off, tap tempo control for delay times, and a built-in tuner.

Rear Panel

Diagram of the rear panel with labeled sections L through W.

Rear Panel Layout

L. POWER: Turns the amplifier on and off.

M. IEC POWER INLET: Connect the IEC power cord here. For Acoustic Junior only, it must be connected to AC power to charge the battery.

N. PHONES: 1/8" stereo headphone output automatically mutes the speaker output.

O. AUX IN: 1/8" stereo input. Connect an external music player; use the external device's volume control to adjust the accompanying music's volume.

P. BALANCED LINE OUTPUTS: Balanced line-level XLR output connectors for connecting to external sound reinforcement and recording devices. Changes to control panel settings affect the balanced line output signal (includes aux input and Bluetooth signals).

Q. MONO/STEREO: 'Out' position is for normal left/right stereo effects output, summing channels 1 and 2 ('summed'). The 'In' position sets both outputs to mono; use with the MONO CONFIGURE button (S).

R. GROUND LIFT: 'Out' position is for normal (grounded) operation. The 'In' position may help reduce unwanted line noise.

S. MONO CONFIGURATION: When the MONO/STEREO button (Q) is engaged, the 'Out' position sends channels one and two summed to both output jacks (CH2 + CH1); useful for small PA applications with minimal inputs. The 'In' position provides separate outputs for channels one and two (CH2 or CH1); useful for isolating instrument/vocal mixes for recording or performance.

T. USB PORT: The amplifier's control panel features a USB port for audio recording. Connect your computer with recording software here using a micro-USB cable (not included). Your computer's audio control panel will recognize 'Fender Acoustic' as an audio recording device. For assistance with setting up and using USB recording, visit the 'Connected Amps' section at https://support.fender.com.

The stereo USB output includes channels one and two summed together (includes aux input and Bluetooth signals).

U. SERVICE: For Fender service personnel use only.

V. FIRMWARE UPDATE: If a firmware update is recommended, instructions will be posted at https://support.fender.com.

W. FOOTSWITCH: 1/4" input jack for connecting the optional MGT-4 four-button footswitch; see 'Footswitch' section.

Footswitch

NOTE: The magnetic overlay included with the amplifier must be attached to the optional MGT-4 four-button footswitch to use the footswitch with these amplifiers. Place the magnetic overlay onto the footswitch (cover shown above).

Footswitch Controls

X: MODE LEDs: Indicate whether channel 1, channel 2, or looper mode is selected by the MODE BUTTON (Y).

Y: MODE BUTTON/LED: Press repeatedly to select channel 1, channel 2, or looper, as indicated by the MODE LEDs (X). In tuner mode, this red LED illuminating indicates a sharpened pitch closer to correct pitch.

Z: FUNCTION BUTTON/LED 1: Press to engage the 'FX BYPASS' function, which disengages the effect on the active channel. In tuner mode, this red LED illuminating indicates a flattened pitch closer to correct pitch. See the 'Looper' section for this button/LED's 'REC/DUB' function.

AA: DISPLAY: Shows the selected mode and function information.

BB: FUNCTION BUTTON/LED 2: Press repeatedly for the 'FX SELECT' function, which cycles through effects – from top to bottom on the control panel's EFFECTS DISPLAY (E) for the active channel (repeats at the end of the list). In tuner mode, this red LED illuminating indicates a sharpened pitch closer to correct pitch. See the 'Looper' section for this button/LED's 'PLAY/STOP' function.

CC: FUNCTION BUTTON/LED 3: Controls time-based effect tempos (reverb, delay, delay plus chorus, delay and reverb) for both channels. Tap at least twice at the desired tempo to set the delay time for active effects; the red LED above the button will flash accordingly. TAP TEMPO is global for all modes, allowing effects to be changed while maintaining tempo. Press and hold this button to enter hands-free tuner mode, where the tuner reads the audio signal from either channel 1 or channel 2 as selected by the MODE BUTTON (Y). The four red LEDs at the top of the footswitch (MODE and FUNCTION BUTTON LEDs) indicate varying sharpened and flattened pitches (the red LED above this button illuminating indicates a greater sharpening). The CENTER TUNER LED (DD) is green when the correct pitch is achieved. See the 'Looper' section for this button/LED's looper 'UNDO' function.

DD: CENTER TUNER LED: In tuner mode, this green LED illuminating indicates correct pitch.

Looper

The LOOPER mode allows the user to record up to 90 seconds of loops and overdub subsequent parts. Any number of overdubbed parts can be layered over the original recorded part; however, only the last created overdub can be undone.

Looper functions can be performed manually using the control panel's LOOPER BUTTONS (K) (close-up below) or hands-free using the footswitch in looper mode (see 'RECORDING' below). Recording/overdubbing is done via the control panel REC/DUB button or the footswitch FUNCTION BUTTON 1 (Z). Playback/stop functions are performed via the control panel PLAY/STOP button or the footswitch FUNCTION BUTTON 2 (BB). Deleting the last recorded part is done using the control panel 'UNDO' button or the footswitch FUNCTION BUTTON 3 (CC).

Recording

To begin recording a loop, press the control panel REC/DUB button (K) or press the footswitch MODE BUTTON (Y) until the 'LOOPER' MODE LED (X) illuminates, then press the footswitch FUNCTION BUTTON 1 (Z), labeled 'REC/DUB'. The REC/DUB button/LED will flash, and the footswitch DISPLAY (AA) will show 'REC', indicating the looper is in record mode. Record any length of passage up to 90 seconds.

Playback and Overdubbing

You can stop recording and begin playback of the first passage automatically by pressing the PLAY/STOP button (on the control panel or footswitch). The PLAY/STOP button/LED will illuminate, and the footswitch DISPLAY will show 'PLA' to indicate playback. Stop playback by pressing the PLAY/STOP button again; the footswitch DISPLAY will show 'STP'.

Alternatively, after stopping playback of the first musical passage, press 'REC/DUB' again (from the control panel or footswitch) to enter overdub mode directly. The REC/DUB button/LED will continue to flash, and the footswitch DISPLAY will show 'DUB', indicating the looper is now in overdub mode and the first musical passage can be overdubbed. Overdub mode can also be activated during playback of the first passage or after playback has been stopped by pressing the 'REC/DUB' button again. Continue overdubbing musical passages as many times as desired. Once an overdub has been recorded, press the PLAY/STOP button to start and stop playback of all recorded parts.

"UNDO" FUNCTION

While recording, playing, or stopping the first musical passage, the user may choose to undo a recording by pressing the looper's 'UNDO' button (on the control panel or footswitch). Doing so will stop the recording, and the footswitch DISPLAY will show three dashes, indicating that all recorded data has now been deleted. When overdubs have been added, the UNDO function will only affect the last recorded overdub; previous overdubs cannot be undone.

Clearing Looper

To clear all looper content, press 'PLAY/STOP' (once if playing, twice if recording or overdubbing) to stop recording. Then, with the looper stopped, pressing the 'REC/DUB' button will begin a new recording, effectively 'clearing' the previously recorded audio.

Also note when using the looper:

  • Recorded audio is not saved when the amplifier is turned off.
  • The looper output is mono only (no stereo effects).
  • The VOLUME control (B) does not affect the looper once recording has been made.
  • The looper can be used with both channels; both inputs (A) will be mixed together according to their volume levels.

Bluetooth

Press and hold the PAIR button (G) for three seconds to activate pairing mode. The PAIR button will flash and remain lit when a connection is successful (will time out after two minutes if no connection is made). The amplifier will then automatically pair with the last connected device (if available).

To connect, enable Bluetooth on your external device, scan for the displayed Bluetooth devices, and select 'FENDER ACOUSTIC'. Use your external device's volume control to adjust Bluetooth volume through the amplifier.

You can disconnect or connect to another device by disabling Bluetooth on your mobile device or by pressing and holding the PAIR button (G) for three seconds. The amplifier will return to pairing mode for two minutes until a connection is successful.

PERFORMANCE TIP: The amplifier streams audio from your mobile device only. Calls will not come through the amplifier, but streaming audio will be muted when a call arrives. To avoid such streaming interruptions, enable airplane mode on your mobile device and manually enable Bluetooth.
