Important Warnings
- This is an electrical device; proper installation is crucial to prevent shock or fire. Read and follow all instructions carefully.
- To prevent fire hazards from electrical arcing due to damaged or improperly installed heating cable, use appropriate fault protection equipment (e.g., differential circuit breaker). Conventional circuit breakers may not stop arcing.
- Keep bus wires separated to prevent short circuits.
- Ensure all components and heating cable ends remain dry during installation.
- The black heating cable core is conductive and must be properly insulated and kept dry to prevent shorts.
- Component approvals and performance are based on the use of Chemelex-specified parts only. Do not use substitute parts or vinyl electrical tape.
- Leave these instructions with the end-user for future reference.

Power Connection, Splice and Tee Installation
- Attach Bracket: Using plastic cable ties, attach the mounting bracket to the pipe. For roof-mounted applications, follow steps 3-9 (pages 4-6) and then refer to "Roof Installation" on page 7.
- Connect RayClic-PC: Fold up the four outer snaps on the bracket, position the connector over the snaps, and press down.
- Connect RayClic-PS/PT: Fold up the two center snaps on the bracket, position the connector over the snaps, and press down.
- Prepare Heating Cable: Allow sufficient extra heating cable for service loops. Ensure the end of the heating cable is cut cleanly.
- Score Outer Jacket: Score around and down the outer jacket of the heating cable 3/8 inches from the end. Do not cut through the metal braid or inner jacket.
- Remove Outer Jacket: Remove the outer jacket.
- Place Metal Clip: Place the metal clip over the base of the exposed braid.
- HWAT Only - Cut Braid: Using wire cutters, cut away 1 inch of the braid.
- HWAT Only - Pull Braid Back: Pull the exposed braid back over the metal clip.
- HWAT Only - Cut Aluminum Wrap: Using wire cutters, cut away the aluminum wrap close to the braid and outer jacket.
- IceStop, XL-Trace Edge, and RaySol: Pull exposed braid back over the metal clip.
- Apply Lubricant: Apply a small amount of lubricant to the jacket surface near the braid. Do not apply lubricant within 2 inches of the cable end. (Excessive lubricant may cause low insulation resistance or short circuits).
- Insert Connector: Insert the prepared heating cable end into the connector. Push until fully inserted and the end is visible through the opening in the connection cover plate.
- Secure Connector: Securely tighten the two connection screws, alternating as they are tightened, until the metal top surface is level with the inner clear plastic module.
- Close Lid: Close the lid and snap the lever shut. Do not force the lid. If it does not close, check that all screws are fully tightened.
- Tighten Grommets: Tighten the nuts on the heating cable entries until the grommets are compressed.
- Conduit Attachment (Power Connection): Using two wrenches, attach user-supplied 1/2 inch conduit. Do not exceed 15 ft-lbs of torque to avoid breaking the housing.
- Final Steps (All Kits): Apply insulation, cladding, and warning labels. Terminate power wiring in a user-supplied junction box.
Note: RayClic connection kits are designed for single installation; the heating cable cannot be removed once installed.
Roof Installation
- Mount Bracket: Mount the RayClic-SB-02 wall-mounting bracket flat using screws through the center holes. Do not mount in a gutter or where it may be immersed in water.
- Position Clips: Position attachment clips on the mounting bracket based on the type of connector being installed (RayClic-PC, RayClic-PS, or RayClic-PT).
- Connect Heating Cable: Connect the heating cable as detailed in steps 3 through 9 (pages 4-6).
- Attach Connector to Bracket: Attach the connector to the mounting bracket by pressing until it snaps into place.
- Install Drip Loop: Complete heating cable installation and install a drip loop as shown. Protect the heating cable from sharp edges.
- Power Connection (Roof): Connect user-supplied 1/2 inch conduit following step 11A on page 6. Apply the Electric De-Icing and Snow Melting label on or near the junction box.
End Seal Installation
- Prepare Cable End: Score down and around the outer jacket 1 inch from the end. Remove the outer jacket, being careful not to damage the inner jacket.
- HWAT - Remove Aluminum Wrap: Using wire cutters, cut away aluminum wrap close to the braid and outer jacket.
- Remove Exposed Braid: Remove the exposed braid.
- Install End Seal: Push the end seal completely onto the heating cable.
Note: The end seal can only be installed once and cannot be removed from the heating cable. Do not use until ready for final installation.
Troubleshooting Guide
Problem | Solution |
---|---|
Braid clips are missing. | Braid clips are attached to the cardboard packing insert under the lid. Use them for a ground connection. Contact Chemelex at (800) 545-6258 if missing or lost. |
Mounting bracket is missing. | A pipe mounting bracket is supplied with the kits. A wall mounting bracket or additional pipe mounting bracket can be ordered separately. Refer to "Optional Accessories" for catalog numbers. |
Connector does not snap onto bracket. | For Power Connection kits, fold up the four outer clips. For Powered Splice and Powered Tee kits, fold up only the center clips. |
Heating cable type not mentioned. | Raychem RayClic connection kits are approved for use only with HWAT, XL-Trace Edge, and IceStop heating cables. Do not use with other types. |
Braid clip does not fit. | Ensure the clip is installed on the metal braid, not the outer jacket. |
Heating cable does not have aluminum wrap. | Only HWAT heating cables have aluminum wrap under the braid. Skip the aluminum wrap removal step for XL-Trace Edge and IceStop heating cables. |
Heating cable cannot be inserted into connector. |
|
Lid does not close. | Ensure all screws are fully tightened before closing the lid. |
Heating cable cannot be inserted into end seal. | The outer jacket must be removed from the heating cable before installing the end seal (see "End Seal Installation" on page 8). Ensure 1 inch of the outer jacket, braid, and aluminum wrap (HWAT only) are removed. |
Heating cable cannot be removed. | The power connection and end seal are designed for single installation. The heating cable cannot be removed once installed. Additional Raychem RayClic-E end seals can be ordered from Chemelex. |
Heating Cable Circuit Testing
The RayClic Power Connection Kits (RayClic-PC, RayClic-PS, and RayClic-PT) include test ports in the blank module for confirming continuity or power to the heating cable circuit.
Instructions:
- Open the RayClic Cover.
- Set multimeter to AC voltage function.
- Insert multimeter test probes into the two test ports.
WARNING: To avoid shock, do not cross the test probes or touch them to the metal pressure plate when measuring voltage.
AVERTISSEMENT : Pour éviter les chocs, ne pas chevaucher les sondes d'essai et ne pas toucher au plateau de pression métallique pour mesurer la tension.
