Operating Instructions for Semi-Professional Use
Valid for: PV-CZM-BS Alternative crimping pliers for MC4
Safety Instructions
The assembly and installation of these products must be performed exclusively by electrically skilled or instructed persons, observing all applicable safety regulations. Stäubli Electrical Connectors (Stäubli) disclaims any liability for failure to comply with these warnings.
Caution, risk of electric shock (IEC 60417-6042) ⚡
Perform connector preparation in a de-energized state. Follow the five safety rules when working on electrical installations. After identifying the relevant electrical installations, adhere to the following five essential requirements in the specified order, unless there are compelling reasons to deviate:
- Disconnect completely;
- Secure against re-connection;
- Verify absence of operating voltage;
- Carry out earthing and short-circuiting;
- Provide protection against adjacent live parts.
All personnel involved in this work must be electrically skilled or instructed, or supervised by such a person. Source: EN 50110-1:2013 (DIN EN 50110-1, VDE 0105-1).
Protection against electric shock must also be checked in the end-use applications.
The crimp tool is only to be used for crimping cable conforming to EN50618. Cable stranding must be class 5.

Technical Data
Type designation | Suitable for | Suitable cable dimensions (IEC) |
---|---|---|
PV-CZM-BS | Connectors of type MC4: PV-KST4/... and PV-KBT4/... | 2.5 / 4.0 / 6.0 mm² |
Note: The crimping pliers PV-CZM-BS is intended for occasional crimping of MC4 in small quantities. For frequent use in field assembly, Stäubli recommends the PV-CZM-18100-22100, see MA251, www.staubli.com/electrical.
Crimping Procedure
Note: Prepare cables as described in assembly instructions MA 231, available at www.staubli.com/electrical.
Step 1: Open Pliers
Illustration 1: Open the crimping pliers (press completely together and release).
Step 2: Adjust Die Height
Illustrations 2 & 3: Adjust the die of the crimping pliers to the correct height. The optimal position of the adjustment dial (when the tool is new) is shown in Illustration 2.
Note: In case of maintenance, it may be necessary to readjust the tool using the dial. The die is optimally adjusted when the crimping jaws engage as shown in Illustration 3 with the tool closed completely.
Step 3: Position Contact
Illustration 4: Place the contact in the appropriate cross-section range. Press the pliers gently together until the crimping flaps are properly located within the crimping die.
Note: The crimp tool does not have a locator part. Therefore, the metal part of the crimp must be positioned with great care inside the crimping die.
Step 4: Check Dimensions and Insert Cable
Illustration 5: Check dimensions 'L', see Table 1.
Table 1: Dimensions
Type | Length "L" |
---|---|
PV-K...T4/2,5 | 6-7.5 mm |
PV-K...T4/6 | 6-7.5 mm |
Attention: Do not cut individual strands when stripping! ⚠️
Step 5: Crimp the Contact
Illustration 6: Insert the stripped cable into the metal contact and close the crimping tool completely until it opens automatically. ⚙️
Attention: Ensure that the crimping tabs after crimping only engage the conductor and not the cable insulation! Make sure that no strands come out of the crimp.
Step 6: Observe Crimping Zone
Illustration 7: Observe the crimping zone Z.
Crimp Quality
Good Crimp
A good crimp results in a properly formed and secure connection.
Bad Crimp Examples
- Stamped parts bent wrongly: The metal tabs are not formed correctly.
- Material flow outwards: The metal has flowed out of the intended area.
- Open crimp wings: The crimping connection is not fully closed.
- Not included strands: Some wire strands are not captured within the crimp.
Crimp Height
The crimp height (H) is a critical factor for a reliable connection. The following maximum crimp heights (HMAX) are specified:
- For 2.5 mm² / 14AWG cable: HMAX = 2.00 mm
- For 4.0 mm² / 12AWG cable: HMAX = 2.35 mm
- For 6.0 mm² / 10AWG cable: HMAX = 2.65 mm
