Lead Preparation
Cables with strand class 5 and 6 according to IEC 60228 must be used. Use tinned copper cables only.
⚠️ Do not use oxidized or bare conductors. Stäubli solar cables use high-grade tinned conductors. Stäubli prohibits the use of PVC cables and non-tinned cables of type H07RN-F for safety reasons.
Step 1: Check dimension 'b' (stripping length) as per illustration and Table 1.
b: Control Dimension (mm) | Conductor Cross-Section (mm²) | AWG | Type |
---|---|---|---|
~ 3 | 2.5 | 14 | PV-ADB4-EVO ST/2.5 PV-ADS4-EVO ST/2.5 |
~ 5 | 4-6 | 12/10 | PV-ADB4-EVO ST/6 PV-ADS4-EVO ST/6 |
6.5 | 10 | 8 | PV-ADB4-EVO ST/10 PV-ADS4-EVO ST/10 |
Step 2: Strip the cable to a length of 6.0 mm to 7.5 mm.
⚠️ Do not cut individual strands when stripping!
Crimping
Step 1: Open the clamp (K) and hold it. Insert the contact into the appropriate cross-section range.
Step 2: Turn the crimping flaps (C) upwards.
Step 3: Release the clamp (K). The contact is now locked.
Ensure the contact is correctly placed in the housing and held by the clamp.
Step 4: Verify that the crimping flaps are correctly aligned.
Step 5: Press the pliers gently together until the crimping flaps are properly located within the crimping die.
Step 6: Insert the stripped lead end until the lead strands come up against the locator.
Step 7: Completely close the crimping pliers.
Step 8: Open the crimping pliers.
Step 9: Remove the crimped cable assembly.
Step 10: Visually check the crimp according to IEC 60352-2 criteria:
- All strands captured in the crimp sleeve.
- Crimp sleeve not deformed or missing any portion of crimp flaps.
- Crimp is symmetrical.
- A "brush" of conductor strands visible on the contact side of crimp.
Installation of Receptacles
Drilling the Housing Plate
For horizontal or vertical mounting, a spacing (X) of at least 25 mm is recommended.
Note: Ensure housing wall thickness is 2-4 mm for metal housings and 2-6 mm for plastic housings. If wall thickness is outside these values, validation must be done by the installer.
⚠️ Before mounting plastic insulations through the bore, place the flat gasket on the insulation.
Danger: Lacking a flat gasket or incorrect mounting will compromise IP65 and IP68 ingress protection.
Mounting and Securing
Position the plastic parts (E) for easy mating and disconnecting. Screw on the nuts (M) and tighten with a torque wrench.
Typical torque values are 1.7 N m. The appropriate torque must be verified based on the specific housing in the end-use application.
1) We recommend precisely following the calibration procedure defined for each specific torque wrench used!
In mounting position, the flat gasket must lie evenly on the outer side of the mounting surface. During visual check after assembly, ensure there are no cracks, foldings, or other disturbances.
Assembly Check
Step 1: Insert the crimped contact into the insulator of the male or female coupler until engaged. A "click" sound typically indicates full insertion.
Step 2: Gently pull the cable to check that the metal part is correctly engaged.
Step 3: Insert the appropriate end of the test pin into the male or female coupler as far as it will go. If the contact is correctly located, the white mark on the test pin must still be visible.
Step 4: Polarity marking for the PV string in its end-use must be indicated, for example, on the enclosure where the receptacles are mounted.
The following polarity markings are deemed sufficient: "+" and "-", "POS" and "NEG", "POSITIVE" and "NEGATIVE".
Mating and Disconnecting
Mating
Mate the connectors until a "click" is heard. Check correct engagement by lightly pulling the connector (maximum pulling force: 20 N).
⚠️ Assembly of not fully engaged connectors is not permitted, as it could lead to permanent deflection of clips and potential loss of locking function. Assembly must always be verified.
Unmated connectors must be protected from contamination using Stäubli sealing caps.
Disconnecting
Use the PV-MS-PLS/2 tool to disconnect.
Notes on Installation
General Notes
- Disconnected connectors must be protected from environmental impact (moisture, dirt, dust, etc.) using sealing caps (socket order no. 32.0716; plug order no. 32.0717).
- Do not mate contaminated connectors.
- Connectors must not come into contact with any chemicals.
- The system's short-circuit resistance must not exceed the connector's short-circuit resistance. Clarify connector short-circuit resistance with Stäubli.
Cable Routing
Cable management must allow a minimum of 20 mm of cable exiting directly from the cable seal without bending or stress. Refer to cable manufacturer specifications for minimum bending radius.
[Diagram: Cable routing showing a straight exit of 20mm from the cable seal]
Contaminated/Damaged Connectors
- Prevent contamination from the environment (soil, water, insects, dust).
- Prevent contamination on the connector surface (stickers, paint, heat shrink tubing).
- Do not place the connector directly on the roofing surface.
- Avoid placing the connector at the lowest point of cabling where water can collect.
- Do not allow the connector to be in standing water.
- Do not mount cable ties directly on the connector body.
Mechanical Stress
- Ensure connectors are not subjected to permanent mechanical tensile load or vibration.
- Connectors shall not be under strain from cable management.
