Getting Started & Preparation
Setting the Clock
After plugging in the appliance, the display will show '0.00' blinking. Press the 'h' button to set the hours and the 'm' button to set the minutes (1). The display will return to the normal time after a few seconds.
Preparing the Appliance
Before first use, or if the appliance has not been used for a long time, rinse the circuit by running several cups of water through it without coffee grounds. Open the lid and remove the water tank (2). Fill the water tank with fresh water (3). Replace the water tank firmly, ensuring the valve at the bottom opens. Close the lid (4).
Preparing an Espresso
- Ensure the water tank is filled.
- Place the desired filter (1 or 2 cup) into the filter holder (10).
- Add the correct amount of ground coffee (approx. 1-2 measuring spoons ?) into the filter (11).
- Tamp the coffee grounds evenly using the measuring spoon (12).
- Remove any excess coffee grounds from the rim of the filter (13).
- Insert the filter holder into the brewing head and turn it clockwise until it locks firmly (14).
- Place one or two pre-heated espresso cups under the filter holder.
- Press the 'Espresso' button (15). The yellow heating indicator lamp will turn off when the desired temperature is reached.
- Once the espresso is brewed, press the 'Espresso' button again to stop. Remove the filter holder and discard the used coffee grounds (16).
Preheating Cups
To preheat espresso cups, place the filter holder (without coffee) into the brewing head and place the cups underneath. Press the 'Espresso' button to run hot water into the cups. Press the 'Espresso' button again to stop. Remove the filter holder.
Espresso / Cappuccino Explained
Espresso is a highly aromatic and strong coffee, typically enjoyed in small cups. It is prepared by forcing hot water under pressure through finely-ground coffee beans. This process extracts a rich, black coffee beverage known for its invigorating qualities. A key characteristic of espresso is its distinctive, fine layer of foam on top, known as 'crema'. Achieving this crema requires high pressure, well-roasted beans, and a precise grind. If you do not buy pre-ground espresso coffee, grind espresso beans to a medium-fine consistency.
Steam Production & Usage
Frothing Milk for Cappuccino
After preparing the espresso, you can froth milk for a cappuccino. For best results, use the cappuccino accessory (g). Place the accessory onto the steam nozzle (17). Use cold, skimmed milk in a small, cold pot (max 0.5L capacity). Do not pre-heat the pot. Position the pot so the nozzle is immersed in the milk. Turn the steam valve to the 'steam' position. Ensure the nozzle tip is not touching the bottom of the pot. Froth the milk until the desired texture is achieved. Turn the valve back to the 'off' position and remove the pot. To clear residual milk from the nozzle, place an empty container under the steam nozzle and briefly turn the steam valve on again. Clean the cappuccino accessory and steam nozzle with a damp cloth.
Heating Liquids
Swivel the steam/hot water nozzle. Remove the cappuccino accessory. Ensure the heating circuit is filled with water by pressing the 'Espresso' button until water flows from the brewing head. Press the 'Espresso' button again. Place a container with the liquid you wish to heat under the steam nozzle and immerse the nozzle in the liquid. Turn the steam valve to the 'steam' position (19). Heat the liquid until the desired temperature is reached.
Programming Functions
Automatic Coffee Preparation
Prepare the coffee maker as usual (insert filter, add coffee). Then, program the desired start time. Press the 'auto.' button; a green light will appear (35). The machine will start brewing automatically at the programmed time. The green light will turn off, and the red 'ON/OFF' light will illuminate. The machine will switch off automatically after 2 hours if not manually turned off.
Programming the Start Time
The start time can be programmed up to 24 hours in advance. Press the 'progr.' button; the current time will disappear and the previously programmed start time will appear. Use the 'h' button to set the hours and the 'm' button to set the minutes (34). After 3 seconds, the programmed start time display will be replaced by the current time. You can check the programmed start time at any time by pressing the 'progr.' button.
Maintenance & Cleaning
Cord Storage
Any unnecessary length of the main supply cord can be stored in the special recess at the back of the appliance.
Cleaning the Appliance
- Always unplug the appliance from the mains socket before cleaning.
- To remove the filter holder: Hold the lower part of the filter holder and rotate it approximately 120 degrees to disengage it. Gently pull it downwards and outwards (36).
- Clean the filter holder and drip tray regularly with warm water and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly.
- Wipe the exterior of the appliance with a damp cloth.
- Clean the steam nozzle and cappuccino accessory after each use.
Decalcification
Regular decalcification is essential for optimal performance and longevity. The frequency depends on the water hardness:
- With soft water (up to 7°dH / 1.24 mol/m³): Every 3 months.
- With medium hard water (7-14°dH / 1.24-2.5 mol/m³): Every quarter year.
- With hard water (over 14°dH / 2.5-3.75 mol/m³): Once a month.
If unsure about water hardness, inquire at your local water works. For ecological and health reasons, use biological materials like citric acid or tartaric acid. Dissolve 2 tablespoonfuls of citric acid in half a litre of water. Pour this solution into the water container and run it through the machine 2-3 times as if making coffee, but without coffee grounds. Finally, run clear water through the machine twice.
