BEKA BA307E, BA308E, BA327E, BA328E Intrinsically Safe Digital Indicators

Abbreviated Instruction Manual

Product Description

The BA307E, BA308E, BA327E, and BA328E are intrinsically safe, panel-mounting digital indicators designed to display current flowing in a 4/20mA loop, presented in engineering units. These indicators are loop-powered, introducing only a 1.2V drop. The four models share electrical similarities but differ in display size and enclosure dimensions.

Model Variations:

This document serves as an abbreviated instruction sheet for installation and commissioning. A comprehensive manual covering safety certification, system design, and calibration is available from BEKA associates or their website.

All models feature IECEx ATEX and UKEX intrinsic safety certification for use in flammable gas and dust atmospheres. FM and cFM approvals permit installation in the USA and Canada. Certification details are found on the instrument's enclosure label.

Special Conditions for Safe Use: Certificates carry an 'X' suffix, indicating special conditions apply. To prevent electrostatic discharge, clean the enclosure only with a damp cloth. Special conditions also apply for use in IIIC conductive dusts; refer to the full manual.

Installation

All models offer IP66 front-of-panel protection but should be shielded from direct sunlight and severe weather. The rear of each indicator provides IP20 protection.

Cut-out Dimensions & Terminals:

For BA307E & BA327E (96 x 48mm bezel): Recommended cut-out is 90 +0.5/-0.0mm x 43.5 +0.5/-0.0mm for an IP66 seal.

For BA308E & BA328E (144 x 72mm bezel): Recommended cut-out is 136 +0.5/-0.0mm x 66.2 +0.5/-0.0mm for an IP66 seal. Note: BA308E & BA328E require 4 clamps for IP66 sealing.

Terminal Connections:

Installation Procedure:

The installation involves the following steps:

  1. Align the foot and body of the panel mounting clamp by turning the screw anticlockwise.
  2. Position the gasket behind the instrument bezel.
  3. Insert the instrument into the panel from the front.
  4. Insert the panel clamp into the recess and pull it onto the dovetail. Engage the screw and turn clockwise to tighten the clamp. Fit the other clamp(s). Recommended tightening torque is 22 cNm (1.95 lbf.in), equivalent to finger tight plus half a turn. Do not overtighten.

EMC Considerations:

For specified immunity, all wiring should use screened twisted pairs, with screens earthed at one point within the safe area.

Typical Measurement Loop:

A typical loop consists of a 4/20mA 2-wire transmitter (Tx) connected via a 2-channel Zener barrier (rated 28V; 93mA; 300Ω return) in the safe area to the indicator in the hazardous area. A load resistor is connected across the indicator's input terminals.

Scale Cards

The indicator's units of measurement are displayed on a printed scale card visible through a window on the right side of the display. The scale card is mounted on a flexible strip inserted into a slot at the rear of the instrument, allowing easy changes without removing the indicator or opening the enclosure.

New indicators are supplied with a printed scale card showing requested units. If units are not specified, a blank card is fitted. Self-adhesive scale cards with common units are available as accessories from BEKA associates; custom cards can also be supplied.

To change a scale card: Gently push upwards and pull out the flexible strip. Peel off the old card, align the new printed card onto the strip, and re-insert the strip into the indicator.

Operation

Indicators are controlled via four front panel push buttons. In display mode (showing a process variable), these buttons have the following functions:

Tare Function: When activated, pressing [E] for over 3 seconds in display mode zeroes the display and activates a Tare annunciator. Releasing [E] in less than 3 seconds returns the indicator to the gross display.

Configuration

Indicators are factory calibrated as ordered. On-site changes are possible via the configuration menu.

Access the menu by pressing [P] and [E] simultaneously. If the security code is default '0000', 'FunC' is displayed. If a code is set, 'CodE' is shown, requiring entry of the code.

Configuration Menu Parameters:

Note: CAL and SEt functions are extended when the 16-segment lineariser is activated. Configuration functions for optional alarms appear separately and are detailed in the full manual.

Compliance and Contact Information

The BA307E, BA308E, BA327E, and BA328E are CE marked, complying with the European Explosive Atmospheres Directive 2014/34/EU and the European EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.

They are also UKCA marked, complying with UK statutory requirements: Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations UKSI 2016:1107 (as amended) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations UKSI 2016:1091 (as amended).
