BEKA BA304G & BA324G Intrinsically Safe Digital Indicators

Abbreviated Instruction Manual

DESCRIPTION

The BA304G, BA304G-SS, BA324G, and BA324G-SS are field-mounting, intrinsically safe digital indicators designed to display the current flowing in a 4/20mA loop in engineering units. They are loop-powered, introducing only a 1.2V drop into the loop. All models are electrically similar but differ in display size and enclosure materials.

This abbreviated instruction sheet assists with installation and commissioning. A comprehensive manual covering safety certification, system design, and calibration is available from BEKA associates or may be downloaded from their website.

All models feature IECEx, ATEX, UKEX, ETL, and CETL intrinsic safety certification for use in flammable gas and combustible dust atmospheres. The certification label on the instrument enclosure displays certificate numbers and codes. Copies of certificates can be downloaded from www.beka.co.uk.

INSTALLATION

The BA304G and BA324G feature robust glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosures with carbon loading. The BA304G-SS and BA324G-SS have 316 stainless steel enclosures. Both enclosure types are impact-resistant and provide IP66 ingress protection. They are suitable for exterior surface mounting in most industrial environments or can be panel or pipe mounted using accessory kits.

If the indicator is not bolted to an earthed post or structure, the earth terminal should be connected to local earthed metalwork or the plant's potential equalising conductor. GRP indicators have an earth terminal on the cable entry bonding plate, and stainless steel indicators have it in the bottom left-hand corner of the back-box.

Terminals 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14 are fitted only when the indicator includes optional alarms and a backlight. Refer to the full manual for details.

Installation Procedure:

  1. Step A: Unscrew the four captive 'A' screws and separate the indicator assembly from the back-box.
  2. Step B: Secure the back-box to a flat surface using M6 screws through the four 'B' holes. Alternatively, use a pipe mounting kit. Four M6 clearance holes are provided for surface mounting.
  3. Step C: Two M20 x 1.5 threaded cable entries are provided. One IP66 stopping plug (nylon or stainless steel to match the enclosure) and one temporary hole plug are supplied. Remove the temporary hole plug and install an appropriate IP-rated cable gland or conduit fitting. Feed the field wiring through the cable entry.
  4. Step D: Terminate field wiring on the indicator assembly. Replace the indicator assembly onto the enclosure back-box and tighten the four 'A' screws.

Dimensions and Terminal Connections (Fig 2):

The diagram shows dimensions and terminal connections. Key terminals include:

Replacing the Scale Card: Carefully insert the scale card into the slot on the right side of the input terminals (as shown in Fig 4). Apply force evenly to both sides to prevent twisting. Insert until approximately 2mm of the transparent tab remains protruding.

OPERATION

The indicator's units of measurement and tag information are displayed on a slide-in scale card above the display. New instruments are supplied with a scale card showing the requested information. If not specified, a blank scale card is provided, which can be marked on-site. Custom printed scale cards are available from BEKA associates.

To remove the scale card, carefully pull the tab perpendicularly away from the rear of the indicator assembly.

All models are controlled and calibrated via four front panel push buttons. In display mode, these buttons have the following functions:

* BA324G & BA324G-SS only.

Note: If the indicator was calibrated using the CAL function, calibration points may not be 4 and 20mA.

Measurement Loop Example (Fig 3):

The diagram illustrates a typical measurement loop including a hazardous area, safe area, 2-wire transmitter, safety barrier, load, and the BEKA indicator. It shows a 4/20mA input and loop power supply.

EMC

For specified immunity, all wiring should be in screened twisted pairs with screens earthed in the safe area.

CONFIGURATION

Indicators are supplied calibrated as requested. Default configuration is supplied if not specified, but can be changed on-site.

Access to the configuration menu is by pressing the P and E buttons simultaneously. If the security code is the default 0000, the first parameter 'Fun' is displayed. If a security code is set, 'Code' is displayed, and the code must be entered to access the menu.

Fig 5 shows the configuration menu structure and function summaries. Refer to the full instruction manual for detailed configuration information, lineariser, and dual alarm descriptions.

Configuration Menu Parameters:

Compliance: The BA304G, BA304G-SS, BA324G & BA324G-SS are CE marked for the European Explosive Atmospheres Directive 2014/34/EU and the European EMC Directive 2014/30/EU. They are also UKCA marked for UK statutory requirements.
