BEKA BA307NE & BA327NE Rugged Digital Indicators
1. DESCRIPTION
The BA307NE and BA327NE are rugged, certified Ex nA & Ex tC digital indicators housed in stainless steel panel mounting enclosures. They are loop-powered by the 4/20mA input current, which they can display in almost any engineering units.
The two models are electrically similar but have different display sizes:
- BA307NE: 4 digits, 15mm high
- BA327NE: 5 digits, 11mm high, and a bargraph.
This abbreviated instruction sheet assists with installation and commissioning. A comprehensive manual detailing safety certification, system design, and calibration is available from BEKA sales or can be downloaded from the BEKA website: www.beka.co.uk.
Typical Certification Information Label:
The IECEx, ATEX, and UKEX certificates have an 'X' suffix indicating special conditions apply:
- a. The indicator must be installed in a panel maintaining at least one of the following protection types: Ex nA IIC Gc, Ex e IIC Gc, Ex p IIC Gc, or Ex tC IIIC Dc.
- b. When installed in an Ex e panel enclosure, the indicator must be powered from a limited energy circuit.
- c. When installed in an Ex p panel enclosure, the indicator must be powered from a limited energy circuit with a rated prospective current of less than 10kA, and the four rear vents must be unobstructed.
- d. When installed in an Ex tC panel enclosure, the indicator must be powered from a limited energy circuit.
Refer to the certificate or full instruction manual for detailed certification information. Compliance with UKCA requirements is based on the indicator's ATEX certification.
2. INSTALLATION
Both models offer IP66 front-of-panel protection but should be shielded from direct sunlight and severe weather. The rear of each indicator has IP20 protection.
Panel Mounting:
The indicator is designed for panel mounting with a cutout of 90 +0.5/-0.0 mm x 43.5 +0.5/-0.0 mm. The maximum panel thickness is 8 mm.
The indicator is secured using panel clamps. Slide a panel clamp into the grooves at each corner of the instrument and secure with a stainless steel washer and wing nut, tightening to 22 cNm (1.95 lbf in) minimum. Fit protective caps afterward.
Wiring:
For specified immunity, all wiring should be in screened twisted pairs, with screens earthed at one point within the safe area. The diagram shows a typical transmitter loop connection for a 4/20mA signal, with terminals 2 & 4 internally linked for the return wire. Fuses (100mA) are recommended in the safe area instrumentation connection.
Scale Card:
The units of measurement are displayed on a scale card visible through a window on the right side of the display. The scale card is mounted on a flexible strip inserted into a slot at the rear of the instrument.
To change a scale card: Unlock the flexible strip by pushing upwards and pulling it out. Remove the old scale card and affix a new one, aligning it correctly. Insert the strip back into the instrument.
New indicators are supplied with a printed scale card showing requested units. A pack of self-adhesive scale cards is available as an accessory from BEKA associates, or custom cards can be supplied.
3. OPERATION
The indicators are controlled via four front-panel push buttons: P, Y, ▲, and E.
In display mode (showing a process variable):
- P: Displays input current in mA or as a percentage of span. Returns to normal display upon release. Function is modified if alarms are fitted.
- Y: Displays the numerical value and bargraph (BA327NE only) calibrated for 4mA input. Returns to normal display upon release.
- ▲: Displays the numerical value and bargraph (BA327NE only) calibrated for 20mA input. Returns to normal display upon release.
- E: No function in display mode unless the tare function is active.
Button Combinations:
- P + Y: Displays firmware number and version.
- P + ▲: (With optional alarms) Provides direct access to alarm setpoints if 'ACSP' is enabled.
- P + E: Provides access to the configuration menu via an optional security code.
4. CONFIGURATION
Indicators are supplied calibrated as requested. If not specified, default configurations are provided but can be changed on-site.
Access to the configuration menu is by pressing the P and E buttons simultaneously.
- If the security code is the default '0000', the 'FunC' parameter is displayed.
- If a security code is set, 'CodE' is displayed, and the code must be entered.
The configuration menu allows adjustment of various parameters including:
- Function: Select standard function or lineariser.
- Resolution: Adjust the resolution of the least significant digit.
- Decimal Point: Set the position of the decimal point.
- Calibration: Calibrate using external current sources (4mA for zero, 20mA for span) or internal references (ZEro and SPAn functions).
- Bargraph (BA327NE only): Select bargraph type, justification, start (bArLo), and finish (bArHi) points relative to the digital display.
- P Button Function: Configure the 'P' button to toggle between 4-20mA and % of span display.
- Tare Function: Turn the tare function on or off.
- Security Code: Define a security code.
- Reset Configuration: Reset the indicator configuration (ConF) or reset the lineariser to default (LtAb). Confirm with 'SuRE'.

Compliance:
The BA307NE and BA327NE are CE marked for the European Explosive Atmospheres Directive (2014/34/EU) and EMC Directive (2014/30/EU). They are also UKCA marked for UK statutory requirements, including the Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (UKSI 2016:1107) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations (UKSI 2016:1091).
