Dimensions and Mounting

The sensor features two mounting holes on its base, suitable for direct wall mounting or attachment to a standard 2-inch by 4-inch [51 mm by 102 mm] junction box. Dimensions: The sensor is 4-5/8 inches (118 mm) wide and 2-13/16 inches (71 mm) high, with mounting holes located 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) from the top/bottom edges and 5/8 inches (17 mm) from the side edges.

Sensing Element

Resistance/Temperature Characteristics

C7130A Performance: Resistance vs. temperature graph showing 3484 ohms at 77°F (25°C) and 4.8 ohms/°F sensitivity.

C7130B Performance: Resistance vs. temperature graph showing 1097 ohms at 77°F (25°C) and 2.1 ohms/°F sensitivity.

Operating Conditions

Accessories

Shielded Cable: Optional for wiring to the controller at distances greater than 50 ft [15 m] to prevent possible electrical noise from causing erratic sensing. Available options include:

Installation Instructions

General Installation Guidelines

  1. Read these instructions carefully. Failure to follow them could damage the product or cause a hazardous condition.
  2. Verify that the product ratings match your application requirements.
  3. Installation should be performed by a trained, experienced service technician.
  4. After installation, check product operation as per these instructions.

IMPORTANT: All wiring must comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

CAUTION: Electrical Shock or Equipment Damage Hazard. Can shock individuals or short equipment circuitry. Disconnect power supply before installation.

Mounting and Location

Mount the C7130 Wall-mount Temperature Sensor in a location where the thermostat setting will not be subjected to tampering.

  1. Select a location on an inside wall, approximately 5 ft [1.5 m] above the floor. A standard 2-inch by 4-inch [51 mm by 102 mm] junction box can also be used for mounting.
  2. Ensure the sensor is placed no more than 300 ft [91 m] from the controller.
  3. Ensure good air circulation at the chosen location for accurate average temperature readings. Avoid the following locations that can introduce measurement errors:
    • Hot areas: Caused by concealed pipes or ducts, drafts from fireplaces or other heat sources, or convection/radiant heat from the sun or electrical equipment.
    • Cold areas: Caused by concealed pipes or ducts, drafts from windows and doors, or unheated areas on the other side of the wall.
    • Dead air areas: Such as behind doors, furniture, curtains, or in corners and alcoves.
  4. Mark the area on the wall where the C7130 Sensor or junction box will be mounted.

Mounting Location: Illustrates wall mounting, advising to avoid heat sources and drafts for accurate readings.

Wiring

CAUTION: Erratic System Operation Hazard. Failure to follow proper wiring practices can introduce disruptive electrical interference (noise). Keep wiring at least one foot away from large inductive loads such as motors, line starters, lighting ballasts, and large power distribution panels. Shielded cable is required in installations where these guidelines cannot be met. Ground shield only to the grounded controller case.

IMPORTANT:

Disconnect the power supply before connecting wiring to prevent electrical shock or equipment damage. Wiring must comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

Wire the C7130 Sensor to the temperature controller following the procedure in the controller's instructions. Figure 3 provides an example of general wiring for the C7130.

Wiring Diagram: Shows connection to R7380 controller, emphasizing 24V AC supply and grounding the shield only at the controller.

Mount the C7130 to the wall or junction box.

Operation and Checkout

Operation

The C7130 Wall-mount Temperature Sensor converts ambient room temperature into a resistance value that the controller can interpret. The sensor exhibits a positive temperature coefficient (PTC), meaning its resistance increases as the temperature rises. The C7130A sensor's resistance increases by approximately 4.8 ohms per degree Fahrenheit [8.6 ohms per degree Celsius]. The performance curves for the C7100A and C7170A sensors are identical to the C7130A, making them interchangeable.

The C7130B sensor's resistance varies with temperature at a rate of approximately 2.1 ohms per degree Fahrenheit [3.85 ohms per degree Celsius].

Checkout Procedure

  1. Allow the C7130 Wall-mount Temperature Sensor to stabilize in the room's airflow for at least five minutes before taking measurements.
  2. Using an accurate thermometer (± 1°F [0.5°C]), measure the temperature at the sensor's location, allowing sufficient time for the thermometer to stabilize.
  3. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance across the sensor wires.
  4. Verify the sensor's accuracy by comparing the measured resistance and temperature against the relevant temperature/resistance curve (Figure 4 for C7130A, Figure 5 for C7130B).
