Product Components
The Bialetti Moka Express coffee maker consists of the following parts:
- Boiler (Base): The lower chamber that holds water. It features a central threaded post and an external safety valve.
- Funnel Filter: A cylindrical metal filter that is filled with coffee grounds. It fits into the top of the boiler.
- Gasket and Filter Plate: A circular rubber or silicone gasket sits around the rim of the boiler, above the funnel. A metal filter plate is often placed above the gasket. These components create a seal between the base and the upper chamber.
- Collecting Pot (Upper Chamber): The top section that screws onto the boiler. It has a spout for pouring coffee and a handle. Brewed coffee rises through the central post and collects here.
- Lid: A cover for the collecting pot, often with a knob.
How to Use Your Moka Express
- Fill the boiler with cold water up to the level of the safety valve.
- Insert the funnel filter into the boiler.
- Fill the funnel filter with ground coffee, leveling it without pressing it down.
- Screw the upper chamber tightly onto the boiler.
- Place the Moka Express on a heat source (stovetop) on medium heat.
- When coffee begins to flow into the upper chamber, reduce heat slightly.
- Remove from heat once the upper chamber is nearly full and the characteristic gurgling sound occurs.
- Stir the coffee in the upper chamber before serving.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Proper cleaning ensures longevity and optimal coffee taste.
- Allow the Moka Express to cool completely before cleaning.
- Unscrew the upper chamber from the boiler.
- Remove the funnel filter and discard the coffee grounds.
- Rinse all parts with warm water. DO NOT use soap or detergents, as they can damage the aluminum and affect the coffee's flavor.
- Dry all parts thoroughly with a soft cloth before reassembling.
- Periodically check the gasket and filter plate. Replace if worn or damaged.
- Do not use abrasive materials or steel wool for cleaning.
- Do not put the Moka Express in a dishwasher.

Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions:
- Coffee does not come out: Check if the funnel is clogged, the coffee is too finely ground and packed too tightly, or the upper chamber is not screwed on tightly.
- Coffee tastes bitter: Ensure you are not using too much heat, the coffee is not burnt, and the coffee grounds are not too fine.
- Water leaks from the seal: Check if the gasket is properly seated and not damaged, or if the upper chamber is screwed on tightly enough.
Additional Notes
Suggestions for best results:
- Use freshly brewed coffee.
- Wait for the brewing cycle to complete before serving.
