How to Open the Tumbling Barrel
- Unscrew and remove the outer black knob.
- Pop off the stainless steel housing. If difficult, use a flat object like a silverware handle to pry it off.
- Reattach the black knob and use it to pull off the inner lid.
- Remove the rough gemstones and grit.
Polishing Instructions
Caution: Grit can damage plumbing. Never pour used grit down household drains. Wash gritty stones and barrel outside with a garden hose.
- Add your rocks and Grit #1 to the tumbler barrel.
- Fill with water until it just covers the rocks.
- Remove the black knob from the inner lid. Re-insert the black inner lid with the screw pointing outward. Replace the metal cap. Reattach and tighten the black knob. Place the barrel on the tumbler base.
- Plug in the tumbler and select the desired number of days (see "Suggested Tumbling Times").
- When the cycle is over, pour the contents into the strainer. Rinse the rocks and barrel with water to remove all grit.
- Repeat steps 1-5 with Grits #2, #3, and #4 in order. This process will gradually polish your rough rocks into smooth gemstones.
- Use the included jewelry fastenings to create necklaces, rings, keychains, and clip-on earrings (which can also be used as pins). Gemstones can be inserted into keychain and necklace cages without glue. For rings and earrings, adult help is recommended for gluing. Use a hot glue gun or all-purpose adhesive sealant.
Polishing takes time. While this tumbler speeds up the process, expect about 4 weeks for great results. Patience is key.
Tips for Best Results
- Tip #1: Don't overload the tumbler. Fill the barrel about 1/2 to 2/3 full for optimal rock movement and polishing. Overfilling may cause the tumbler to automatically shut off due to the built-in sensor. If this happens, unplug the tumbler, remove some rocks, and plug it back in to reset.
- Tip #2: Use your own judgment. While the guide provides starting times, adjust based on your rocks' hardness and type. Some rocks may need more time.
- Tip #3: Wash test stones before changing grit. Grit #1 rounds edges. After each cycle, wash a few test stones to check smoothness before discarding grit. If not smooth enough, return them to the barrel for more tumbling.
- Tip #4: Add a small amount of mineral oil to finished stones for a shiny look.
Suggested Tumbling Times
- Grit #1: 3-5 days (until edges are smooth)
- Grit #2: 6-8 days
- Grit #3: 6-8 days
- Grit #4: 7-10 days (longer polishing time yields best results)
