Installation Instructions
General Fitting Steps
- Disassemble the bumper and permanently remove the aluminum buffer beam. Reinstall the buffer beam bolts to prevent water ingress.
- Slide the towbar with the carrying arms into the freed openings on the back of the vehicle in the chassis beams, ensuring points (A) align with the provided drillings in the exterior of the chassis beams. Insert bolts and washers, and screw everything tightly (refer to torque specifications).
- Make a cut underneath the bumper according to Drawing 2. For R-Line models, the cut should be made according to Drawing 1. Mount the bumper again on the vehicle.
- Assemble the ball (*) along with the safety ring (-s) and the multiple socket holder (-p). Insert the bolts and screw them tightly (refer to torque specifications).
Bumper Disassembly
- 2 screws at the bottom of the bumper.
- 2 x 4 screws at the trunk entrance.
- 2 x 3 screws on the mudguard.
- 2 screws behind the number plate.
- Release the anthracite-colored plate.
- Unclip the sides outwards.
- Shift the bumper backwards.
Bumper Cut-out Diagrams
Drawing 1: R-Line Models Only
This diagram illustrates the cut-out required for R-Line models. The hatched area indicates the section to be removed from the bumper ('B'). 'O' marks the lower rim of the bumper, and 'M' marks the middle of the bumper. The diagram shows dimensions for precise cutting: the hatched area is approximately 140mm wide, centered, with a height of 60mm, extending from a minimum of 30mm from the top edge of the cut-out. The overall cut-out is approximately 170mm wide and 95mm high, with specific angles (45°) at the corners.
Drawing 2: Standard Models
This diagram shows the cut-out for standard Volkswagen Tiguan models. The hatched area is the section to be removed from the bumper ('B'). 'O' denotes the lower rim, and 'M' the middle of the bumper. The cut-out is approximately 90mm wide and 65mm high, centered, with a depth of 110mm.
Important Recommendations
Fitting Recommendations
- Ensure the towbar has not been damaged during transport and is the correct reference for the vehicle.
- Read the fitting instructions carefully and follow them precisely.
- Present the towbar under the vehicle before starting the installation.
- When drilling holes, check that no existing cables (electrical, brake, fuel) can be damaged. Remove any soundproofing material. Clean and protect drilled holes with an anti-corrosive product.
- For vehicles with non-standard bumpers (special series, sport kits, tuning parts), contact GDW technical service before proceeding with the installation.
Warranty and Maintenance
- Do not exceed the indicated towing weight, 'D', and 'S' values.
- The towbar must be checked after the first 1,000 km of use and at least once a year.
- Check all bolt connections and retighten if necessary.
- Repair any damage to the paint finish.
- Replace any components that have been damaged due to an accident or collision.
- Grease the internal parts of detachable towbar systems.
Usage Guidelines
- If the towball covers the number plate or the fog light, it must always be removed when no trailer is used.
Clearance Specifications
The required clearance must be guaranteed according to Appendix VII, Diagram 30 of guideline 94/20/EG. This ensures proper function and safety. The diagram specifies minimum and maximum dimensions and angles for the installation area, including minimum distances from the vehicle structure (e.g., min. 140mm, max. 100mm, min. 32mm, min. 55mm, min. 75mm) and angles (max. 45°, max. 30°). These specifications apply at the vehicle's permissible total weight.
