NXP Semiconductors is introducing its new BMx7318/7518 IC family for battery cell controllers. The 18-channel ICs are designed for Li-Ion battery cells and were developed for High Voltage Battery Management Systems (HVBMS) in electric vehicles, industrial energy storage solutions (ESS), as well as 48V Battery Management Systems (BMS). The new integrated circuits (ICs) are based on a new, high-performance architecture with dedicated Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) per channel. They enable a flexible and diverse selection of building blocks with PIN-to-PIN compatibility between the different solutions, thus supporting a cost-optimized design without compromising BMS performance. The new product family includes solutions that meet ASIL-C certification for the automotive industry. Furthermore, it also offers variants that qualify for SIL2 certification in industrial applications.

Key Features and Benefits

With the globally increasing demand for scalable and economical energy solutions, battery management systems must offer an optimal balance of measurement accuracy, lifespan, reliability, and design flexibility. The new architecture of the BMx7318/7518 family reduces the number of external components by up to 50 percent, significantly lowering system costs for automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers. It also combines high electromagnetic compatibility (EMV) with robust performance in the Bulk Current Injection (BCI) range.

The new BMx7318/7518 family integrates analog front-end functionality, elements of battery pack monitoring, including dedicated current measurement capabilities, as well as gateway components like an SPI2TPL bridge in a modular product portfolio with suitable functionality depending on the chosen configuration. The ICs also support semi-centralized architectures for battery management, contributing significantly to reducing system costs without compromising system stability.

“The BMx7318/7518 family marks an important innovation leap in battery management,” explains Naomi Smit, Vice President & General Manager, Driver and Energy Systems at NXP. “By integrating an advanced ADC architecture, high-performance balancing, and robust EMV immunity, we enable our customers to realize more efficient and scalable energy systems. The solution reduces system-level complexity and meets necessary safety requirements for automotive and industrial applications. Thus, NXP makes an important contribution to the energy transition with technology that combines performance, flexibility, and reliability.”

Technical Specifications

A look at the technical features shows: The BMx7318/7518 family is based on a newly developed IC concept that decouples the individual cell voltage measurement from each individual cell, thereby minimizing potential crosstalk. This improves the precision of measured values after internal filtering.

The ICs also support flexible layouts for up to 18 cells and offer a parallel cell balancing management concept with up to 150 mA per channel, even at ambient temperatures up to 125 °C. Individual channels can reach up to 300 mA, meaning a noticeable reduction in cell balancing time. The system additionally supports an ultra-low current mode with only 5 µA quiescent current, making it particularly suitable for long storage or transport over long distances. Furthermore, a dedicated hardware interrupt pin enables a quick reaction to overcurrent events.
