Introduction
This guide outlines a procedure for completely removing and replacing a non-functioning power port on the motherboard of the Samsung SmartThings Hub.
Tools Required:
- Phillips #1 Screwdriver (1)
- Soldering Iron (1)
- Soldering Tweezers (1)
Step 1: Open the Device
The main image displays the internal circuit board (motherboard) of a Samsung SmartThings Hub. A power port, located on the edge of the board, is highlighted with a red rectangular box.
To open your device, gently slide the grey bottom cover in the direction of the arrow as shown.
Step 2: Remove Screws
The bottom of the Samsung SmartThings Hub is shown. First, the battery compartment is visible with batteries removed. Second, a Phillips #1 screwdriver is used to remove screws from the casing. Third, a sticker is being peeled back to reveal a fifth screw.
Make sure the batteries are removed before attempting disassembly.
Using your Phillips #1 screwdriver, remove the four visible 12.5mm screws.
Next, either peel up the longer of the two stickers or punch a hole with the tip of your screwdriver to access the fifth 12.5mm screw.
Step 3: Split the Casing
The casing of the Samsung SmartThings Hub is being gently separated. Hands apply upward pressure to split the two halves of the device, revealing the internal components.
Once all five screws are removed, split the casing apart by applying gentle upwards pressure against the positive terminals in the battery compartment.
Step 4: Remove the Motherboard
The motherboard of the Samsung SmartThings Hub is shown. Hands grip the USB and Ethernet ports. The motherboard is lifted and slid forward to detach it from a black retaining clip on the right side.
To remove the motherboard, grip the USB port and the Ethernet port. Lift up, then slide towards the front of the device to release the motherboard from the black retaining clip shown on the right.
Step 5: Desolder the Power Port
The motherboard is placed on a flat surface. A soldering iron is shown heating a solder joint on the power port. Tweezers are positioned to remove the power port.
Place the motherboard on a clean, flat surface.
Preheat your soldering iron. The power port has three points of connection to the motherboard. Using your soldering iron, apply heat to each solder joint in turn while pulling the power port away from the board.
⚠️ Soldering irons can reach temperatures of over 500 degrees. Watch your fingers!
For more information on soldering refer to How to Solder and Desolder Connections.
Step 6: Remove the Old Power Port
Tweezers are used to carefully remove the desoldered power port from the motherboard. A close-up shows the removed power port.
Using tweezers, remove the desoldered power port from the motherboard.
Reassembly
To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
