OBDLink LX Bluetooth: Android Quick Start Guide
1 Download & Install OBDLink App
To begin, download the OBDLink app onto your Android device. You can do this by scanning the provided QR code or by visiting the URL: obdlink.com/app.
The app interface includes icons for Settings, Diagnostics, Dashboard, Maps, Monitors, Logs, and Connect/Disconnect functions.
2 Connect to Vehicle
Plug the OBDLink LX adapter into your vehicle's diagnostic link connector (DLC). The DLC is typically found on the driver's side, underneath the dashboard.
If you are unsure about your vehicle's DLC location, consult the resource at dlc-locator.com.
The OBDLink LX is a compact green device designed to interface with the vehicle's OBD-II port.
3 Turn Ignition On
Turn your vehicle's ignition to the 'ON' position (engine off). Observe the indicator LEDs on the OBDLink LX: the 'POWER' LED should illuminate, and the 'BT' (Bluetooth) LED should begin flashing slowly. This indicates the adapter is powered and ready for pairing.
If no LEDs light up, please check your vehicle's fuses.
The OBDLink LX features indicator lights labeled POWER, OBD, HOST, and BT.
6 Initiate Connection
Press the 'Connect' button located on the OBDLink LX adapter. Following this action, the 'BT' LED will change from a slow blink to a fast blink, signaling that it is actively searching for a Bluetooth connection.
The 'Connect' button is a physical button on the OBDLink LX device.
4-5 Configure Bluetooth Settings
On your Android device, open the main 'Settings' application.
Navigate to the 'Wireless & networks' section (this may also be labeled as 'Connections' or similar, depending on your Android version).
Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled. Once enabled, tap on 'Bluetooth settings' to access options for managing connections and device discoverability.
The Android settings screen shows options to manage wireless connections, including Bluetooth.
7 Scan for Devices
Within your device's Bluetooth settings, select the option to 'Scan for devices'. Allow a moment for your device to detect nearby Bluetooth devices. The OBDLink LX should appear in the list of available devices.
The Bluetooth settings screen displays a list of found Bluetooth devices, including the OBDLink LX.
8 Pair with OBDLink LX
From the list of discovered Bluetooth devices, locate and tap on the entry labeled 'OBDLink LX - Pair with this device'.
9 Confirm Pairing
Your Android device may prompt you with a 'Bluetooth pairing request', potentially displaying a passkey (e.g., 184254). You do not need to verify or enter this passkey. Simply tap the 'Pair' button to confirm the connection.
Upon successful pairing, the OBDLink LX will be listed in your device's Bluetooth settings as 'Paired but not connected'.
The pairing confirmation screen shows the device name and a passkey, with options to 'Pair' or 'Don't Pair'.
10 Launch OBDLink App & Connect
Open the OBDLink application you installed earlier. Within the app, tap the 'Connect' button. Once the Bluetooth connection is successfully established, the 'BT' LED on the OBDLink LX adapter will illuminate steadily (turn solid). This solid light indicates a stable connection.
You can now proceed to tap 'Diagnostics' within the app to begin scanning your vehicle's systems.
The OBDLink app interface features controls for connecting and disconnecting, as well as diagnostic functions.
11 Optional: Third-Party Apps
For advanced features and expanded capabilities, OBDLink recommends using popular third-party OBD applications such as Torque and DashCommand. These can be downloaded by scanning their respective QR codes or by visiting the following URLs:
- Torque: obdlink.com/tq
- DashCommand: obdlink.com/dc
Screenshots showcase the interfaces of the Torque and DashCommand applications, highlighting their diagnostic and data visualization features.
12 Connect with Third-Party Apps
Using Torque: Open the Torque app, go to 'Settings', then 'OBD2 Adapter Settings'. Select 'Choose Bluetooth Device' and choose 'OBDLink LX' from the list. Return to the Torque home screen to establish the connection.
Using DashCommand: In the DashCommand app, tap on the option to select your hardware interface (often labeled 'ELM' or similar), then proceed to 'Connection' and select your OBDLink LX adapter.
