Installation

Step 1: Mounting the Panel

Mount the HZ221 TrueZONE panel near the HVAC equipment. Locate it on a wall, stud, roof truss, or cold-air return.

Note: The HZ221 TrueZONE panel can be mounted in any orientation; level it for appearance only.

The installation diagram illustrates mounting the HZ221 TrueZONE panel near HVAC equipment. It shows placement options on a wall (wall mount) or ductwork (duct mount), connected to the return duct, supply duct, a bypass damper, and zone dampers (ARD dampers). An alternate location for the DATS is also indicated.

Step 2: Attaching the Base

Separate the zone panel cover from the base. Use the base as a template to drill mounting holes. Attach the base to the wall, stud, roof truss, or duct with appropriate screws (not included).

This diagram shows how to separate the zone panel cover from its base. The base serves as a template for drilling mounting holes. It specifies using two screws for mounting to a stud or roof truss, and four screws for duct or drywall/plaster installations.

Wiring

Wiring must comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

CAUTION: Voltage Hazard. Can cause electrical shock or equipment damage. Disconnect power before beginning installation. Wire the entire panel before applying transformer power.

Step 3: Install Thermostats

Install thermostats using instructions provided with the thermostats. Connect the thermostat to the zone panel. To connect a wire to the panel, strip approximately 1/4 inch of insulation and push the wire into the terminal. To release a wire, press the button on top of the terminal. In retrofit applications, trim the end of the wire if it is not straight.

If the thermostat has separate E and Aux terminals, install a jumper between the two terminals.

The wiring diagram details thermostat connections to the zone panel terminals (R, C, E/AUX, Y, G, O, L), including a note on using a jumper for separate E and Aux terminals. It also shows wiring for ARD/ZD (spring-open, power-closed) and RRD/MARD (power-open, power-closed) dampers, connecting to terminals M1, M4, M6. Wires can be routed through panel channels and secured with a cable tie.

Step 4: Install Dampers

Install dampers using instructions provided with the dampers. Connect dampers to the zone panel.

Note: Multiple dampers can be wired in parallel.

Step 5: Connect DATS

Connect the Discharge Air Temperature Sensor (DATS) as shown.

Step 6: Connect Equipment

Connect other HVAC equipment as shown in the diagram. The DS/BK terminal is used with a variable-speed fan. Connect to the DS, BK, or ODD terminal on the furnace equipment. When only one zone calls for heat, cool, or fan, the DS/BK terminal operates the fan at low speed to reduce airflow.

Step 7: Connect Transformer

Connect the transformer as shown.

This section provides an overall wiring view for a heat pump system. It details connections for the HZ221 zone panel to thermostats, dampers, DATS, air handler, 24V transformer, heat pump, and reversing valve, covering various operational modes like Heat, Cool, Fan, Purge, and Emergency Heat.

Operation

The HZ221 TrueZONE panel features an LED display that communicates system and zone status. The LEDs indicate the following information:

Table 5. LED Operation.

LEDDescription
HEATSolid when in heat. Blinking when DATS temperature exceeds 120°F (49°C) and calling for heat pump only. Blinking when DATS temperature exceeds 160°F (71°C) and calling for heat pump and auxiliary heat. At 150°F (66°C), auxiliary heat is disabled.
COOLSolid when in cool. Blinking when 45°F (7°C) DATS low limit mode has been reached.
FANSolid when in operation.
PURGESolid when in purge (lasts 2 minutes at power-up and after a call for heat or cool). Blinking when the DATS sensor has failed, or the wires are shorted or open. Will blink for 3 minutes at power-up if DATS is not present.
ZONE 1, 2Solid green when open or opening. Solid red when closed or closing. Blinking amber when there is a damper or thermostat short circuit (circuit breaker trip).
EM HEATSolid when in Em Heat mode.

The HZ221 panel has indicator LEDs for HEAT, COOL, FAN, PURGE, ZONE 1, ZONE 2, and EM HEAT, showing system status. A separate diagram highlights the EMERGENCY HEAT/PURGE OVERRIDE button, accessible when the panel cover is removed, which can stop Purge mode or activate Em Heat mode.

Much of this information is also listed on the label inside the HZ221 cover, including LED status descriptions (e.g., Flashing Heat LED indicates High Limit).

Zone Names: Zone 1, Zone 2.
