Kensington SD4790P USB-C® and USB-A Quad 4K Hybrid Docking Station

This document provides setup instructions for the Kensington SD4790P docking station.

Product Registration

Register your docking station at kensington.com/register.

Step 1: Connect Power

Connect the power adapter to the DC 20V port on the back of the dock. Connect the power cable to the power adapter. Plug the power cable into a wall outlet.

Step 2: Identify Ports

Front Ports:

  • One USB-C 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps (5V/1.5A) port
  • One USB-C 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps (5V/0.9A) port
  • One combo audio jack [audio jack]

Back Ports:

  • DC 20V port
  • USB-C host port (supports up to 100W power delivery)
  • Three DP++ ports [DisplayPort]
  • Three HDMI ports [HDMI]
  • 1Gbps Ethernet port [network]
  • Four USB-A 3.2 Gen1 5Gbps (5V/0.9A) ports

Side Port:

  • Power button [power button] (ON/OFF)

Step 3: Connect to Host Laptop

Via USB-C:

Connect the USB-C cable (without screw lock) to a USB-C port on the host laptop. This provides power, video, and data.

Via USB-A:

Connect the USB-A adapter (attached to the USB-C cable) to a USB-A port on the host laptop. Then connect the USB-C cable to the USB-A adapter. This provides video and data.

Step 4: Secure USB-C Host Cable

Connect the USB-C host cable with the screw lock connector to the USB-C host port on the back of the dock. Twist the screw lock connector clockwise to secure it.

Step 5: Configure External Displays

5a. DP1.2++(HBR2) USB-C® Alt Mode:

Connect monitors as follows:

  • Monitor 1 (via DP++ port): 1920x1080 @ 60Hz (Alt-mode)
  • Monitor 2 (via HDMI port): 1920x1080 @ 60Hz (Alt-mode)
  • Monitor 3 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)
  • Monitor 4 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)

5b. DP1.4++(HBR3) USB-C® Alt Mode (DSC on):

Connect monitors as follows:

  • Monitor 1 (via DP++ port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DSC on) (Alt-mode)
  • Monitor 2 (via HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DSC on) (Alt-mode)
  • Monitor 3 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)
  • Monitor 4 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)

5c. MacBook M1/M2 Pro/Max Host:

Connect monitors as follows:

  • Monitor 1 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (Alt-mode)
  • Monitor 2 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)
  • Monitor 3 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)

5d. DP1.2++ USB-C without Alt Mode or USB-A Host:

Connect monitors as follows:

  • Monitor 1 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)
  • Monitor 2 (via DP++ or HDMI port): 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (DisplayLink)

Step 6: Install Software (Windows 10 / macOS / Chrome OS)

Download the DisplayLink driver from displaylink.com/downloads. Optionally, download Kensington DockWorks software from kensington.com/software. Follow on-screen prompts for installation.

Security: Cable Locks

Secure the docking station using a Kensington cable lock (sold separately).

Recommended: K65020WW MicroSaver 2.0 Keyed Laptop Lock. Attach to the standard lock slot [lock slot type: square K].

Recommended: K65021WW Slim NanoSaver 2.0 Keyed Laptop Lock. Attach to the nano lock slot [lock slot type: hexagon K].

Attach the lock cable to a fixed location.
