Overview
The Kensington SD1700P is a versatile USB-C portable docking station that provides dual 4K display support and integrated Qi wireless charging. It allows you to connect multiple peripherals, expand your display capabilities, and charge compatible devices wirelessly.
Getting Started: Connecting the Dock
Step 1: Connect to Your Laptop
Connect the included USB-C cable from the dock to a USB-C port on your laptop. Ensure your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Alt Mode) and Power Delivery (PD). For optimal functionality, orient the dock with the Kensington logo and Qi charging pad facing upwards.

Dock Features and Ports
Front Panel:
- 2 x USB-A 3.2 Gen2 Ports: These ports support 10Gbps data transfer speeds and provide 5V/0.9A power output. They are suitable for connecting peripherals such as keyboards, mice, USB drives, cameras, and printers.
- 1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 Port: This port also supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and provides 5V/0.9A power output. It can be used for connecting external hard drives, your laptop's power adapter, or an optional USB-C power adapter.
- Dock Indicator Light: Indicates the operational status of the dock.
- Qi Charging Toggle Switch: A switch to enable or disable Qi charging functionality.
- Qi Charging Indicator Light: Indicates the status of the wireless charging pad.
Back Panel:
- 2 x HDMI Ports: For connecting external monitors.
- 1 x Ethernet Port: Supports 10/100/1000 Mbps network speeds.
Top Panel:
- Qi Wireless Charging Pad: Supports wireless charging for compatible devices, delivering up to 10W. The host USB-C port must supply at least 5V/3A (15W) to enable full Qi charging.
Video Output Specifications
The maximum resolution and refresh rate depend on your laptop's USB-C port capabilities (HBR2, HBR3, HBR3+DSC1.2) and whether one or two monitors are connected.
Display Mode | Single Monitor | Dual Monitors |
---|---|---|
HBR2 | 4K @ 30Hz | 1080p @ 60Hz |
HBR3 | 4K @ 60Hz | 1440p @ 60Hz |
HBR3+DSC1.2 | 4K @ 60Hz | 4K @ 60Hz |

Operating Modes
The dock can operate in two primary modes, controlled by the toggle switch on the front panel.
Mode 1: Bus-Power Mode (No External Power Adapter Connected)
In this mode, the dock is powered solely by the laptop's USB-C connection.
- a1/a2: Enabling Qi Charging: Slide the toggle switch to the right (Qi position). The Qi charging indicator light will illuminate. In this mode, only the Qi charging functionality is available. Place your Qi-compatible device face up on the charging pad. The Qi indicator light should remain solid. If it flashes, ensure the device is correctly aligned.
- b1/b2: Enabling Dock Functions: Slide the toggle switch to the left (Dock position). The dock indicator light will illuminate. The dock's ports and display outputs are now active. Qi charging is disabled.
[Diagram Description: Illustrates the toggle switch positions for enabling either Qi charging or dock functions when the dock is bus-powered.]
Mode 2: Adapter-Powered Mode (External Power Adapter Connected)
When a compatible USB-C power adapter (minimum 85W PD recommended for full functionality) is connected to the dock's USB-C port, both Qi charging and dock functions can be enabled simultaneously.
- a1/a2: Simultaneous Operation: With the toggle switch set appropriately (either position can enable both functions when powered), place your Qi-compatible device on the charging pad. The Qi indicator light should remain solid. If it flashes, ensure proper alignment.
- b1/b2: Compliance Note: Any additional products powered by this docking station must feature a fire enclosure that complies with IEC 60950-1 or IEC 62368-1 standards. Please consult your host device manufacturer to confirm compliance.

LED Indicator Statuses
The dock features indicator lights to show its status. The Qi charging indicator light can display different states:
- [LED Indicator] Blue Flashing: Indicates the device is charging wirelessly. (Multilingual equivalents provided in original document for EN, DE, FR, IT, ES, PT, AE, CN, JP).
- [LED Indicator] Blue Solid: Indicates the device is fully charged or charging is complete. (Multilingual equivalents provided).
- [LED Indicator] Red Flashing: May indicate an error or a problem with the charging process. (Multilingual equivalents provided).

Important Precautions for Qi Charging
To ensure optimal performance and safety when using the Qi wireless charging feature:
- Alignment: Ensure your Qi-compatible device is correctly aligned on the charging pad, typically centered or positioned according to the device's charging coil. If the Qi indicator light flashes, re-align the device.
- Case Thickness: If your device has a protective case, its thickness must be less than 3mm for effective Qi charging.
- Prohibited Items: Do not place the following items on the Qi charging pad:
- Metal objects such as coins, keys, watches, or batteries.
- Credit cards.
Placing incompatible metal objects or credit cards on the pad may cause a warning light to flash or prevent proper charging.

Cable Management
For convenient storage and transport, the USB-C host cable can be detached and stored in the magnetic slot located on the side of the dock.
