How Does a Heat Pump Work?

How does an air-to-water heat pump work? Which components make an air-to-water heat pump so efficient, and how does it extract heat from the outside air even at freezing temperatures?

The principle is simple yet ingenious, and Mitsubishi Electric perfects it thanks to decades of expertise in the development and production of refrigerant compressors.

A split Ecodan air-to-water heat pump consists of two main components: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit connected by a refrigerant circuit. The outdoor unit extracts energy from the ambient air, even at very low temperatures, and transfers this energy to the indoor unit.

This process works reliably, even in severe frost with double-digit negative temperatures. As long as the outside temperature is above absolute zero (-273.15°C), heat can theoretically always be extracted.

The heat pump cycle: Perfectly synchronized

1. Evaporation: The fan blows outside air over the heat exchanger, where the refrigerant evaporates at low temperatures. During this process, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the ambient air, even at sub-zero temperatures. This is possible thanks to the refrigerant's low boiling point, which is lower than the ambient temperature.

3. Condensation: After compression, the gaseous refrigerant flows to the condenser. Here it releases its heat to the water circuit, causing it to cool down and condense back into liquid form. The heat released during this process comes from the ambient air previously absorbed by the evaporator. This heat is now efficiently used to heat the building.

2. Compression: When the refrigerant has absorbed heat and evaporated, it is in a gaseous state with stored thermal energy. This gas is then directed to the compressor. The compressor compresses the gas, significantly increasing both its pressure and temperature. This makes the heat usable for the heating system.

4. Expansion: The expansion valve plays a crucial role in the heat pump by reducing the refrigerant's pressure and regulating its flow. This process is essential for the refrigerant to evaporate again and for the system to function efficiently, allowing heat to be continuously transferred for heating purposes.

Hydrosplit or split?

The difference between a hydrosplit and a split heat pump system lies in the design of the refrigerant circuit. In a hydrosplit system, the refrigerant circuit is entirely within the outdoor unit. The energy is transferred to the indoor unit via well-insulated water pipes. This makes installation simpler and suitable for situations where refrigerant pipes are difficult to place.

In a split system, the refrigerant circuit runs between the outdoor and indoor units. The energy is transferred from the refrigerant to the heating water in the indoor unit. This system offers slightly higher overall efficiency and is suitable for situations where maximum performance is important. The choice depends on the specific installation requirements and efficiency goals.

Diagram: The diagram illustrates the heat pump cycle, showing the outdoor unit, refrigerant lines, and indoor unit with heating distribution.

Also available as air-to-air heat pump: Air-to-air heat pumps work on the same principle as air-to-water systems: they extract heat from the ambient air. The difference is that these systems directly transfer heat to the indoor air, without the need for a water-based heat distribution system. More information about air-to-air heat pumps can be found in the brochure "Comfort for your well-being" and on www.mitsubishi-electric.be.

These heat pumps offer not only a sustainable alternative to traditional heating methods but also go beyond simple heat production. They provide thoughtful solutions focused on comfort, energy efficiency, and integration into existing infrastructure.

With Ecodan heat pumps, the transition to a future-proof heating system becomes simple and reliable.

It's About More Than Just Power

For heating, the lower the supply temperature, the more efficient the operation. Heat pumps can only perform optimally if they do not have to run at too high a temperature continuously. Furthermore, it is crucial that the generated heat is distributed efficiently and that heat loss due to insufficient insulation is minimized as much as possible.

No Underfloor Heating? No Problem!

Whether a heat pump can replace an existing fossil fuel heating system often depends on the supply temperature of the existing heating system. If a supply temperature of 50°C to 55°C is sufficient for comfortable heating on a cold winter day, the building is generally suitable for switching to an Ecodan air-to-water heat pump. This also applies when the building does not have underfloor heating or the insulation is outdated.

Safety Reserves Included as Standard

For situations where a higher supply temperature is temporarily required, Mitsubishi Electric offers thoughtful solutions. For example, heat pumps with the environmentally friendly R290 (propane) refrigerant can provide supply temperatures of up to 75°C for short periods with increased heat demand.

Additionally, most Ecodan systems with R32 refrigerant can reach a maximum supply temperature of 70°C. This often eliminates the need for extensive structural modifications, making the transition to a sustainable heating solution even easier.

Sound Level of a Heat Pump - In Harmony with the Environment

Efficiency and sustainability are self-evident with Ecodan heat pumps, but what about the sound level? Many people worry about the noise production of heat pumps, which is understandable. The outdoor units contain components that produce sound during operation.

Thanks to a renewed design and smart optimizations, the sound power level of the outdoor units has been reduced to just 58 to 60 dB(A). This makes Ecodan heat pumps suitable not only for daily use but also perfect for noise-sensitive areas, such as densely populated residential areas.

This allows you to enjoy sustainable heating without compromising on peace and comfort.

Flexibility in Installation Location

The installation location, in addition to choosing a quiet system, is of great importance for minimizing sound production. Ecodan heat pumps offer a lot of flexibility in placement thanks to their longer pipe lengths.

A distance of just a few meters from sensitive areas, such as children's rooms, bedrooms, and living rooms, is often sufficient to comply with nighttime noise regulations. For even greater noise reduction, it is ideal to install the heat pump near sound-absorbing vegetation, such as laurel hedges.

This not only provides acoustic benefits but also contributes to the "visual damping" of the sound: what is out of sight is often less noticeable. This preserves comfort without compromising the quality of the living environment.

Comparing Carefully

When comparing heat pumps, it is important to pay attention to how sound specifications are presented. Manufacturers typically state the sound power level or the sound pressure level, but these terms are not always standardized.

Therefore, pay close attention to which value is stated and compare these specifications carefully to make the right choice.

Diagram: Illustrates the effect of outdoor unit placement on sound levels, showing different scenarios like under an overhang, between walls, in a corner, against a wall, and freestanding, with corresponding dB(A) increases.

Recommendations:

  1. Increase the distance: if possible, place the unit further from walls to reduce the effect of reverberation.
  2. Use absorbent materials: clad nearby walls with sound-absorbing materials (e.g., acoustic panels or vegetation).
  3. Reorient the unit: direct the unit's air outlet away from walls.
  4. Install deflectors: add elements that disperse the sound and limit reflection between walls.

These measures can significantly reduce the sound level and improve acoustic comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a heat pump cost?

The cost of a heat pump system varies based on factors such as the type of heat pump and the technologies used. As the costs also depend on the specific situation on-site, it is essential to obtain a cost estimate from a certified installer beforehand. Also, inquire whether investing in a heat pump is subsidized.

Does a heat pump provide enough heat?

A heat pump, as a heating system, is at least as reliable as a traditional fossil fuel boiler. Thanks to current technologies, heat pumps can reliably supply the building with heat even at very low temperatures, without the need for an additional heat generator. Furthermore, an air-to-water heat pump can effortlessly provide domestic hot water. Moreover, electricity produced in Europe - and thus the heat pump - has a clear advantage in terms of certainty and durability compared to fossil fuels such as natural gas and heating oil. This makes heat pumps reliable and future-proof.

How maintenance-intensive is a heat pump?

The maintenance of a heat pump is much less intensive than that of a traditional fossil fuel heating system. Thanks to the absence of combustion processes and a simpler design, there are fewer wear-prone parts. This check ensures that no refrigerant is released into the environment, contributing to environmental friendliness and safety.

How high is the efficiency of a heat pump?

The efficiency of a heat pump is impressively high. While traditional heating systems achieve a maximum of 100% efficiency (as all supplied energy is directly converted into heat), a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of up to 500%. This means a heat pump can produce five times more heat than the amount of electrical energy it consumes. This high efficiency is because a heat pump extracts energy from renewable sources such as air, water, or the ground and efficiently converts it into usable heat. This makes a heat pump extremely efficient and a sustainable choice for heating.

What is the lifespan of a heat pump?

The lifespan of a heat pump is comparable to that of a traditional heating boiler and is generally estimated at 20 years. In practice, however, heat pumps often show that they can function reliably for more than 25 years, provided they are properly maintained. This makes heat pumps a sustainable choice and an investment that offers long-term comfort and efficiency.

Can a heat pump also cool?

A heat pump offers more than just heating and hot water production. A reversible air-to-water heat pump can, depending on the model, also be used to cool the building in the summer.
