Introduction
This document provides support notes for the ZyXEL NSA310, covering its applications, features, and frequently asked questions.
Chapter 1: Applications
1.1 NAS Starter Utility Installation
After installing a new hard drive on the NSA310, use the NAS Starter Utility (NSU) to discover and access the NSA310 for IP address assignment (DHCP or static IP). The steps are:
- Double-click
setup.exe
. - Click "Next" to begin the installation.
Installation Wizard Steps:
- Welcome Screen: Prompts to install ZyXEL NAS Starter Utility (NSU) and click "Next".
- Customer Information: Fields for User Name (e.g., CSO_Kelly) and Company Name (e.g., kelly).
- Ready to Install: Confirms readiness to install. Click "Install" to proceed.
- Setup Status: Shows NSU configuring the installation with a progress bar.
- Installation Finished: Indicates successful installation. Click "Finish".
1.2 NSA310 Initialization
After NSU installation, launch it. The first screen shows NAS Discovery. Click your NSA310 and then "Run the Initialization Wizard". A green connection indicates the NAS is reachable; red indicates it is not.
Initialization Steps:
- Enter the username (default:
admin
) and password (default:1234
). Note: these are case-sensitive. - Choose a wizard type: "Default Configuration" (recommended, automatically applies settings like system name NSA310, timezone, network config, HDD config JBOD) or "Manual Configuration" (step-by-step).
- For security, it is highly recommended to change the admin password.
- Confirm settings, noting that "All data on disk(s) will be erased."
- The NAS will configure, which may take a few minutes.
- Upon completion, a "Default Configuration Completed" message appears.
1.3 Network Setting
After initialization, return to the NSU main menu and click "Configure network setting" to set a hostname and IP address for the NSA310.
Network Configuration Options:
- Set NAS hostname.
- Choose to "Get IP automatically from DHCP server" (recommended) or "Assign IP manually" (requires IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway).
- Configure DNS server settings (DHCP or manual).
- PPPoE Configuration options are also available.
1.4 zPilot
Click "Import files or folders with zPilot" to launch zPilot. Drag and drop files or folders to upload them to the NSA310. Files are automatically sorted into Music, Photo, and Video shares. Uncategorized files go to the Public folder.
zPilot File Importer Status: Shows the progress of file transfers, with options to "Clean Up" finished tasks.
1.5 Directory
Click "Show the directory of the NAS" and log in with your username and password to access the NSA310's file structure. Uploaded files are categorized by type.
Accessing Directory: A Windows Explorer-like interface displays shared folders (e.g., music, photo, public, video).
1.6 Device Management
Click "Manage the device" and log in with the administrator's username and password to access the NSA310's web-based GUI. This allows for comprehensive device management and configuration changes.
NSA310 GUI Overview: The GUI includes sections for System Information (Server Name, Firmware Version, CPU Usage, Memory Usage), Volume Status (SATA Volume, USB Volume), and various configuration menus (System Setting, Storage, Network, Applications, Sharing, Maintenance, etc.).
1.7 Play Media Files from Home Screen
Click "Play media files from home screen" to access the NSA310's media library via a web browser. After logging in (username can be admin or other regular users), the Home screen displays categories like "My Favorite", "Shared Playlist", and "Favorite".
Media Playback: Users can select categories (Folder, Album, Artist, Genre, All, Current Playlist) to browse and play music, watch videos, or view photos stored on the NSA310.
Chapter 2: Auto Upload Service
2.1 Auto-upload pictures to Flickr
The NSA310 can automatically upload pictures to Flickr (http://www.Flickr.com
) and videos to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com
). FTP uploading is also supported.
Configuration Procedure for Flickr:
- Enable auto-upload in Flickr service via the web GUI (Applications > Auto Upload > Flickr/YouTube).
- Configure Flickr account information.
- Link your NSA310 with your Flickr account. This involves authorizing the connection via a popup browser.
- Specify folders on the NSA310 to monitor for pictures.
- Set the "Grace Period" (time to wait after a file is added before uploading) and other options. Supported file formats include GIF, JPG, PNG, and TIF.
- Press "APPLY" after specifying the folder.
- After the grace period, pictures from the specified folder will be uploaded to Flickr.
- Monitor service status and check uploaded photos on the Flickr website.
Chapter 3: Package Management
Package management allows users to install additional applications on the NSA310. Available applications include: BackupPlanner, DyDNS, Gallery, NFS, PHP-MySQL-phpMyAdmin, SMART, SqueezeCenter, Wordpress, and eMule.
Accessing Package Management: Navigate to Applications > Package Management.
Installing Applications:
- Use "Retrieve List From Internet" to update the package list.
- Install, enable, and configure applications.
- After installation, additional links for the applications appear in the navigation panel.
3.1 Gallery
The Gallery application is a web-based tool for hosting photos. Users can upload photos from local computers or the NSA310. Log in using the administrator account to access the Gallery GUI.
Uploading Photos to Gallery:
- Access the Gallery GUI via the Package Management screen or by entering the IP address in a web browser (e.g.,
http://10.59.1.75/pkg/gallery/
). - Log in with the admin username and password.
- Use the "Add Items" function, selecting "From Local Server" or other options.
- Transfer files from accessible directories on the NSA310 (e.g., within shares like "admin", "public", "photo").
- Files are added, and thumbnails can be created.
- Uploaded photos can be viewed and edited within the Gallery interface.
