Teltonika TAT140: Setting Up Using SMS Commands
For initial setup, watching the ExploreVan Video and then following these instructions is recommended.

The Teltonika TAT140 is an asset tracker with the following features:
- Battery powered (up to 3 years life)
- Replaceable Battery
- GNSS/2G/4G connectivity
- Passive / Dormant until needed
- Waterproof
- Compact design
- Professional Solution
- Configurable for user needs
- Supports user-provided Data SIM
- Choice of Tracking App or SMS communication
- Setup via Windows App or SMS
- Expandable to include additional sensors
The TAT140 is designed to remain dormant most of the time, waking up only for short periods to conserve battery and avoid detection. This guide focuses on a simple setup for vehicles like caravans, motorhomes, and cars using SMS commands, which is particularly useful for MAC users as the standard configurator tool may not work.
The device uses minimal data, making a simple PAYG (Pay As You Go) SIM solution cost-effective. Additional sensors can also be connected.
3 Key Modes
The device operates in three main modes:
- Dormant: No connections, saving battery and data, no signals to detect location.
- Check-in: Wakes up, checks for instructions, checks current location, follows instructions, sends info to server, and goes back to sleep. This can be triggered by schedule or a specific event.
- Recovery: Stays awake, continuously tracking location, checking for instructions, and regularly sending info to the server. It returns to sleep when instructed.

Setup Using SMS Text Messaging (Without a Computer)
Initial Set-up by SMS – Connecting the Network
- Install the SIM card with the unit switched off. Turn the unit on; a green LED will start flashing. Ensure the SIM phone number is saved in your phone contacts.
- While the LED is flashing, send a text message to the unit with two blank spaces followed by
getinfo
to test it.
Example SMS response:
RTC:2004/1/1 0:0 Init: 1970/1/1 0:0 UpTime:20s PWR:PwrVoltage RST:0 GPS:0 SAT:0 TTFF:0 TTLF:0 NOGPS:0:0 SR:0 FG:0 FL:0 SMS:0 REC:0 MD:0DB:0
- Set the Username and Password using the following SMS command format:
setparam 3003:<username>;3004:<password>
. (Example:setparam 3003:e;3004:v
sets username 'e' and password 'v').
If the LED stops flashing, turn the unit off and on again to wake it up. Going forward, always include the username and password in your commands.
Getting the Tracker's Location via SMS
To request the tracker's location, send an SMS with your username, password, and the command getgps
. The tracker will send its location when it wakes up.
Command format: <username><password>getgps
Setting the APN for Your SIM
To enable online tracking, you need to connect the device to the internet by setting the APN for your SIM card.
- Set Network APN: Send an SMS command in the format:
<username><password>setparam 2001:<APN>
. (Example for a SMARTY SIM:e v setparam 2001:mob.asm.net
). You will need to use the APN provided by your mobile network provider. - Test APN Settings: You can verify the APN settings by sending the following SMS command:
<username><password>getstatus
.
Example response for getstatus
:
Data Link: 0 GPRS: 1 Phone: 0 SIM: 0 OP: 23420 Signal: 5 NewSMS: 0 Roaming: 0 SMSFull: 0 LAC: 2161 Cell ID: 13455367 NetType: 2 FwUpd:-65536
Setting Up the Tracker to Use with a Tracking App
Several tracking app options are available. This guide uses Ruhavik and Explorevan, which utilize the same service. The setup is straightforward, with various subscription levels available. The free option is often sufficient.
Set up an account at: https://ruhavik.com/en
After creating an account, Ruhavik will provide you with the DNS Server Host and Port needed to connect the tracker. Ensure you use the settings provided by Ruhavik.
Set the DNS Server
Send an SMS with the DNS address: <username><password>setparam 2004:<DNS Server>
.
Example: e v setparam 2004:11249.flespi.gw
Set the Port Number
Send the next SMS with the Port details: <username><password>setparam 2005:<Port>
.
Example: e v setparam 2005:20856
You should receive a confirmation message once both settings are applied.
Add Tracker ID to Ruhavik App
Set the ID number from your tracker within the Ruhavik app or on their website. This will allow the app to display the tracker's location.
The free option of the app includes one tracker and one geofence. Additional subscriptions offer more features, such as dynamic security zones.
Example Use Case & Configuration
The following settings can be configured via SMS commands:
- Enable Periodic Tracking:
<username><password>setparam 184:1
- Enable on Move Event Sending:
<username><password>setparam 239:1
- Enable on Stop Event Sending:
<username><password>setparam 237:1
The device can be configured to report its location based on movement or stationary periods. For example, using the accelerometer, if the unit detects motion for more than 10 seconds, it will check in and then return to sleep. If it remains stationary for more than 10 minutes after moving, it will check in again, unless recovery mode is activated.
Recovery Mode Command
To activate recovery mode, send: <username><password>recovery:1
.
When the vehicle stops for more than 10 minutes, the tracker will check in, and recovery mode will be activated. It will stay online and update its location regularly (default is every 180 seconds).
To deactivate recovery mode, send: <username><password>:0
.
Once these settings are in place, you can live track the vehicle in the Ruhavik app. The app updates live tracking every 30 seconds.
