HINKLEY Assembly and Mounting Instructions

General Assembly

Item No. 3676

Getting Started

  1. Find a clear area in which you can work.
  2. Unpack fixture from carton.
  3. Carefully review instructions prior to assembly.

Safety Warning: Read wiring and grounding instructions (I.S.18) and any additional directions. Turn power supply OFF during installation. If new wiring is required, consult a qualified electrician or local authorities for code requirements.

The construction of this fixture will be accomplished by first determining the length of chain required, mounting the attaching strap to the junction box, making all necessary electrical connections, and hanging the fixture from the ceiling.

Determine Fixture Length

  1. Determine the overall length you will need the assembled fixture to be.
  2. Determine how many chain links will be needed to achieve the overall length you require.

Install Stem and Chain

Refer to Drawing 1 - Stem Installation. This diagram shows the fixture's stem with the supply wire passing through it and connecting to a chain loop at the top.

  1. Install stem (1) by slipping it onto the supply wire of the fixture, threaded end down, and threading it into the top of the fixture.
  2. After the stem has been attached to the fixture body, attach one end of the chain to the loop at the top of the stem (1).

The fixture is now ready to be mounted to the ceiling.

Shade Removal

Refer to Drawing 2 - Shade Removal. This illustration shows how to remove the fixture's shade.

  1. When it is necessary to remove the shade, remove the barrel knobs (1) located inside the top shade edge.
  2. After the barrel knobs are removed, the shade can slide out the bottom of the decorative cage (2).

Mounting the Fixture

Preparation

  1. Shut off electrical current before starting. If the fixture you are replacing is turned on and off by a wall switch, simply turn the switch off. If not, remove the appropriate fuse (or open the circuit breakers) until the fixture is dead.

DO NOT restore current --- either by fuse, breaker or switch --- until the new fixture is completely wired and in place.

Refer to the mounting diagrams on Page 2. These diagrams illustrate the components involved in mounting the fixture to the ceiling, including the junction box (J), mounting bracket (1), center threaded tube (3), canopy (4), hex nut (5), chain, supply wire, ground wire, and the inspection cable hook. They detail how the bracket attaches to the junction box, how the center tube is threaded through, and how the fixture is temporarily hung using the inspection cable hook.

Mounting Steps

  1. To begin assembly, first determine the length of chain you will require to hang the fixture.
  2. Attach one end of the chain to the top loop of the fixture.
  3. Attach the other end of the chain to the loop (4) on the canopy.
  4. Unwrap the supply wire and ground wire and weave them up through the chain.
  5. Slip the supply wire and ground wire through the center hole (E) of the loop (4).
  6. Note: Get assistance for this step since the fixture may be heavy and difficult to hold while attaching the chain.
  7. To mount the fixture to the ceiling, first attach the mounting bracket (1) to the junction box (J) mounted in the ceiling.
  8. Next, thread the center threaded tube (3) into the center hole in the mounting bracket (1) approximately 1/2" (12.5mm).
  9. Now, with assistance, take the assembled fixture and lift it up. Using the hook on the end of the inspection cable, hook it into the mounting strap. Now slowly release the fixture until it is safely hanging from the inspection cable.
  10. Now make all necessary electrical connections, following instruction sheet (IS18) provided.
  11. Next, make final adjustments on the threaded center tube (3). The end of the tube should extend past the ceiling approximately 1". After adjustment is made, tighten the hex nut (5) up against the mounting strap (1).
  12. After all connections are made, tuck wires into the junction box and lift the fixture. Slide the threaded tube (3) through the center hole in the canopy and hold the canopy in position.
  13. Now thread the knob (8) onto the end of the threaded tube (3) and tighten to secure the fixture to the ceiling.

Wiring and Grounding Instructions (I.S. 18)

Safety Warning: Read wiring and grounding instructions (IS 18) and any additional directions. Turn power supply OFF during installation. If new wiring is required, consult a qualified electrician or local authorities for code requirements.

Refer to the I.S. 18 diagrams on Page 3. These diagrams visually represent the wiring and grounding connections for different fixture types (Flush Mount, Chain Hung, Post-Mount). They label: Supply wires (Positive A, Negative C), Fixture leads (Positive B, Negative D), Fixture ground wire (E), Mounting strap (M), Ground screw (S), and Twist-on connectors. They illustrate connections between supply wires, fixture leads, and grounding points, including the use of silicone sealant for outdoor applications.

Wiring Instructions (Indoor Fixtures)

  1. Connect positive supply wire (A) (typically black or the smooth, unmarked side of the two-conductor cord) to positive fixture lead (B) with an appropriately sized twist-on connector.
  2. Connect negative supply wire (C) (typically white or the ribbed, marked side of the two-conductor cord) to negative fixture lead (D).
  3. Please refer to the grounding instructions below to complete all electrical connections.

Wiring Instructions (Outdoor Fixtures)

  3. Cover the open end of connectors with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
  4. If installing a wall mount fixture, use caulk to seal gaps between the fixture mounting plate (backplate) and the wall. This will help prevent water from entering the outlet box. If the wall surface is lap siding, use caulk and a fixture mounting platform specially.
  5. Please refer to the grounding instructions below to complete all electrical connections.

Grounding Instructions

Flush Mount Fixtures

For positive grounding in a 3-wire electrical system, fasten the fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) to the fixture mounting strap (M) with the ground screw (S).

Note: On straps for screw-supported fixtures, first install the two mounting screws in the strap. Any remaining tapped hole may be used for the ground screw.

Chain Hung Fixtures

Loop fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) under the head of the ground screw (S) on the fixture mounting strap (M) and connect to the loose end of the fixture ground wire directly to the ground wire of the building system with appropriately sized twist-on connectors.

Post-Mount Fixtures

Connect fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) to power supply ground with an appropriately sized twist-on connector inside the post. Cover the open end of the connector with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
