System Program Update
Before using the unit, ensure that its system program is at the most recent version. For information on available upgrades, see the Roland website (https://proav.roland.com/).
You can check the system program version by pressing the [MENU] button, navigating to "SYSTEM", then "SYSTEM INFORMATION", and finally selecting "VERSION".
Important Safety Information
Before using this unit, carefully read "USING THE UNIT SAFELY" and "IMPORTANT NOTES" (the leaflet "USING THE UNIT SAFELY" and the Startup Guide, page 7). Keep these documents accessible for future reference.
Panel Descriptions - Top Panel
1 AUDIO PLAYER: Assign sound sources like background music or sound effects to the pads and play them back. You can use WAV format audio files from a USB flash drive or SD card.
- [LEVEL] knob: Adjusts the playback volume of the sound source.
- SIG/PEAK indicator: Lights up when audio output is detected. Red indicates excessive volume (0 dB and above), yellow indicates appropriate volume (-20 to -1 dB), and green indicates insufficient volume (-50 to -21 dB).
- [SETUP] button: Displays the setup screen.
- Pads [1]-[6]: Press to play the assigned sound source.
2 AUDIO OUT:
- [AUX 1], [AUX 2] knobs: Adjust the volume of the AUX bus output.
- [USB OUT] knob: Adjusts the volume of the USB output.
- [STREAM/RECORD] knob: Adjusts the volume of streaming/recording.
- SIG/PEAK indicators: Lights up when audio output is detected. Colors indicate volume levels as described for the AUDIO PLAYER.
3 AUDIO EFFECT:
- [1]-[3] buttons: Turn audio effects on/off. Different functions can be assigned to each button.
- [SETUP] button: Displays the setup screen.
4 AUDIO MIXER:
- [SETUP] buttons: Displays the setup screen.
5 [SOLO] buttons: Output only the audio of the selected input channels. When active, allows monitoring of pre-fader audio through headphones.
6 [MUTE] buttons: Mute (silence) the audio of the selected input channels.
7 Level meters: Show the main output level.
8 [SETUP] button, [MUTE] button: For the main output.
9 [1]-[7/8] faders: Adjust the input volume for each channel.
10 [MAIN] fader: Adjusts the output volume.
11 Display (Touch Panel): Shows video status, streaming/recording status, parameters, and menus.
12 [MENU] button: Switches the menu screen visibility.
13 [EXIT] button: Exits a menu level or cancels an operation.
14 [VALUE] knob:
- Turn: Selects menu parameters and edits their values.
- Press: Confirms the selected menu item or edited value.
15 PinP & KEY 1-2: Composites video using PinP or picture-in-picture.
- [PVW] buttons: Turn inset screen preview output on/off.
- [PGM] buttons: Turn PinP composition on/off.
- [POSITION H] knob: Adjusts horizontal position of the inset screen. Turn while pressing to adjust inset screen size.
- [POSITION V] knob: Adjusts vertical position of the inset screen. Turn while pressing to adjust zoom of the video in the inset screen.
16 [MONITOR] button: Switches video signals for the built-in display (monitor).
- MULTI-VIEW: Shows final output video, preview output video, and videos assigned to VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons in sections.
- PROGRAM: Shows the final output video.
- AUDIO LEVEL: Shows the audio level screen.
- STILL-VIEW: Shows loaded still images in 16 sections.
Note: The above are factory default settings; functions can be reassigned.
17 [OUTPUT FADE] button: Fades the final output video and audio in/out.
- Lit: Fade-out completed.
- Blink: Fading in/out.
- Unlit: Normal output.

18 DSK: Composites video using a downstream keyer.
- [PVW] button: Turns preview output of the DSK compositing result on/off.
- [PGM] button: Turns DSK composition on/off.
19 PANEL:
- [SETUP] button: Displays the setup screen.
20 MODE: Changes the functions of the VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons.
- [INPUT SELECT] button: Use VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons to select video sources for the PGM bus or PVW bus.
- [AUX] button: Use VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons to select video signals for the AUX bus.
- [SCENE MEMORY] button: Use VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons to recall scene memories. Long-press to register current settings.
- [MACRO] button: Switches VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons to execute macros.
21 TRANSITION: Selects video transition effects.
- [MIX] button: Mixes two videos during transition.
- [WIPE] button: Replaces the original video with the next video.
- [SPLIT] button: Divides the screen to composite two videos (left/right or upper/lower).
22 VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons: Functions change based on the selected mode.
23 [CUT] button, [AUTO] button: Determine actions when switching videos, or switch videos directly, depending on the operation mode.
- DISSOLVE (factory setting):
- Pressing [CUT] or [AUTO] button: The video switches instantly if [CUT] is lit green; a transition effect is applied if [AUTO] is lit green.
- VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons: When [CUT] is lit green, the video switches instantly. When [AUTO] is lit green, a transition effect is applied, and the video switches automatically.
- PGM/PST: PST video is displayed in the PVW bus for preview.
- Press VIDEO SWITCHER [1]-[6] buttons: Selects PST video (buttons light up green), shown in PVW bus.
- [CUT] button (lights up red): Switches video instantly.
- [AUTO] button (lights up red): Applies a transition effect, switching video automatically.
Front Panel
1 PHONES jack: Connect headphones here.
2 [PHONES] knob: Adjusts headphone volume.
3 USB HOST connector: Connect USB storage (flash drive, external SSD) for backing up settings or importing materials.
4 SDXC card slot: Insert an SD card here.
Rear Panel
1 DC IN jack: Connect the included AC adaptor. Use the cord hook to secure the cord.
2 [POWER] switch: Turns the power on/off.
3 TALLY/GPIO connector: Connect devices with tally indicators or control signal input/output.
4 USB STREAM connector (USB Type-C®): Outputs audio/video to a computer and allows remote control via dedicated software. Use a USB 3.0 port for HD video output. Ensure the USB cable is for data transfer, not charging-only.
5 DIRECT STREAM port: Connect to a network device for livestreaming. Allows remote control and camera control. Displays tally on iOS/Android devices (smart tally). Requires a CAT5e or better LAN cable.
6 VIDEO OUT 1-3 connectors: For video output. Connect to appropriate devices. Factory settings: VIDEO OUT 1 for PROGRAM (final output), VIDEO OUT 2 for PREVIEW, VIDEO OUT 3 for MULTI-VIEW.
7 VIDEO IN 1-6 connectors: For video input. Input format is detected automatically.
8 RS-232 connector: Connect to a computer for remote control.
9 Ground terminal: Connect to an external earth or ground.
10 CTL/EXP 1, 2 jacks: Connect a footswitch or expression pedal for video switching.
11 AUDIO OUT (XLR, RCA) jacks: Output audio. Audio bus assignment (MAIN, AUX 1, AUX 2, MONITOR) can be changed.
12 AUDIO IN 1-6 (XLR/TRS) jacks: Connect mic or line-level analog audio equipment. Phantom power (+48V) can be supplied to condenser mics via XLR connectors (enable in menu settings).
AUDIO IN 7/L, 8/R (LINE IN) jacks: Connect analog audio equipment like an audio mixer.
Basic Operation
Turning the Power On/Off
Before turning the unit on/off:
- Turn the volume down.
- Perform the eject operation before removing USB flash drives/SD cards.
- The unit is not designed for continuous operation over long periods (e.g., one month). Cycle the power periodically for extended use.
Turning the power on:
- Ensure all devices are powered off.
- Turn on the VR-6HD [POWER] switch.
- Turn on the power of connected source devices (e.g., video cameras).
- Turn on the power of connected output devices (e.g., projectors).
Turning the power off:
- Turn off output devices first, then source devices.
- Turn off the VR-6HD [POWER] switch. A "SHUT DOWN" message will appear.
- Press the [VALUE] knob to confirm shutdown. Press the [POWER] switch again to cancel.
About the Auto Off function:
The unit automatically powers off after a period of inactivity. Refer to the "Reference Manual" for details on disabling this function. Ensure data is saved before power off, as unsaved data will be lost. Turn the unit back on to restore power.
About SD Card:
An SD card is required for audio/video recording and still images. SDXC cards are supported. For compatibility information, visit the Roland website (https://roland.cm/vr-6hd_om).
Inserting the SD Card:
- Push the SD card into the SDXC card slot until it clicks. Ensure correct orientation.
Formatting an SD Card:
- Press [MENU] → "SD CARD/USB MEMORY" → select "FORMAT" → press [VALUE] knob.
- Select "OK" and press [VALUE] knob.
Note: Formatting erases all data on the card.
Removing an SD Card:
- Press [MENU] → "SD CARD/USB MEMORY" → select "EJECT" → press [VALUE] knob.
- Select "OK" and press [VALUE] knob.
- Once "The SD Card is safe to remove" is displayed, push the SD card further into the slot.
- Pull the SD card out.
USING THE UNIT SAFELY
WARNING
- Concerning the Auto Off function: The unit powers off automatically after a period of inactivity. Refer to the "Reference Manual" for details.
- Use only the supplied power cord: Do not use with other devices.
- Handle lithium batteries carefully: Do not recharge, heat, disassemble, or throw into fire/water. Keep out of reach of children. Seek medical attention immediately if swallowed. Avoid excessive heat.
- Take care to avoid burns: The unit's bottom may become hot.
- Secure sufficient space at the setup location: Allow adequate ventilation (30 cm/12 in. around, 5 cm/2 in. rear, 20 cm/8 in. sides/front).
- Use only the supplied AC adaptor and the correct voltage: Using other adaptors may cause damage or electric shock.
CAUTION
- Handle the ground terminal carefully: Ensure the screw is replaced and firmly fastened.
Precautions concerning use of phantom power supply:
Always turn phantom power off when connecting devices other than condenser microphones that require it. Supplying phantom power to incompatible devices (dynamic mics, audio playback devices) can cause damage. Check microphone specifications.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- Power Supply: Place the AC adaptor with the indicator facing upwards.
- Placement: Rubber feet may discolor or mar surfaces.
- Repairs and Data: Back up data before sending for repairs, as data restoration may not always be possible. Roland is not liable for lost data.
- Additional Precautions: Data can be lost due to equipment failure or incorrect operation. Back up data regularly. Never strike or apply strong pressure to the display. Avoid creating video content that may cause discomfort (headache, nausea) due to rapid image changes. Do not use connection cables with built-in resistors.
- Using External Memories: Observe precautions for external memory devices. Do not remove while reading/writing. Discharge static electricity before handling.
- Caution Regarding Radio Frequency Emissions: Do not disassemble, modify, remove certification labels, or use the device in countries other than where purchased.
- Network Connection: This unit cannot connect directly to a telecommunications provider's network. Use a router or similar equipment for internet connection.
- Intellectual Property Right: Recording, copying, or distributing copyrighted material without permission is illegal. Do not use this product to infringe copyrights. Roland is not responsible for copyright infringements. The product allows recording/duplication of original or non-copyrighted material.
